4chan does come from a time before online safety was priority. The online terminology for a /b poster literally has a mod-able slur. These days the internet is basically a modern suburb. And thats exactly the reputation of horrible-ness 4chan is known for that even sites like Reddit generally curb (not completely of course). I will note that it isnt a /pol/ thing though. That kind of edgy hateful culture has been baked into 4chan since the start. Reddit is that, but with floaties on. Also, when ppl refer to 4chan and their horrible-ness, they're actually talking about /b Random; which is a board on 4chan. Most of 4chan's reputation stems from that board, as the rest of the boards on 4chan are pretty normal. Even random boards like the Pokemon, cartoon, food, and even the lgbt board has lgbt and Ableist slurs just being a normal part of the culture. Apparently mainstream racial slurs are actually modded but the most basic coded dogwhistles that will get an insta-suspension here are extremely common too. 4chan has its uses for finding info of the most obscure stuff that isn't brought up anywhere else but yeah, not really a place to actually use regularly. --- Make love, not war- too many people have forgotten this |
