Snake5555555555 07/10/20 1:12:08 AM #48 | Nelson_Mandela posted... Pinhead (Hellraiser) Pinhead is iconic; no doubt about it. Yet, I doubt even 3/4 of people familiar with him have even seen more than 1 film of his, if that. Despite being one of the most prolific horror villains of all time, with 10 films & 3 novels under his belt, I just don't feel Pinhead gets the respect he deserves, and that's a shame, and not really though much fault of his own either. Pinhead may be lumped in as part of the 80s slasher craze, but he was specifically written to avoid the pitfalls of those stoic characters, as Doug Bradley portrayed the role with solemnity & upper-class mannerisms, an almost affable figure if you looked past the obvious. This made Pinhead stand out well in the crowded market of the era, and would continue to fill that niche despite diminishing returns & increasingly worsening sequels, until I would say Tobin Bell entered the game as Jigsaw. Pinhead may be the one true icon the body horror genre has, and even pushes fringe concepts like sadomasochism to a somewhat mainstream status. As many irrelevant and inessential sequels the Hellraiser franchise gets, at least the first film is etched into horror history, and though Pinhead may never make the Mt. Rushmore of horror icons, he's sure of a hell a lot more complex than your average serial murderer, and deserves a second look if you've neglected yourself of painful pleasures over the years. Snake5555555555 07/09/20 6:04:04 PM #46 | Jesse_Custer posted... The Beast (Over the Garden Wall) Over the Garden Wall is yet another example of what I love so much about children-focused horror. The Beast almost seems like a fever dream, destined to be one of those figures of lost media hanging around the fringes of the mind, an animated behemoth of pure body horror that scarred the minds of the few children that happened to catch the short airing on channel zero. Except he's real (and he's spectacular!). Over the Garden Wall expertly melds the world of folk horror, classic Americana, & a fairy tale setting with the production & sensibilities of modern children's animation, featuring realistically exaggerated designs & the occasional dash of random humor. Enter, the Beast, an enigmatic figure literally shrouded in darkness & mystery, a villain made for the age of the internet fable yet decidedly classical, a compounding of all of childhood's fears, phobias, and anxieties rolled up into one, crafting a twisted monster that is only shown truly in a flash one time, and I wonder how even said quick flash got approved in the first place. Not that I'm complaining: its alluring singing is ripe for teaching children about stranger danger, its true appearance ripe for internet sharing, theories, and word-of-mouth spread among school mates. It works so well because Over the Garden Wall is as much whimsical fantasy as it is about the simplistic horrors of every day life, and to have such a strong personification of it presented to our minds at our development age, is to create a truly lasting lesson that sticks in our brains forever. Snake5555555555 07/09/20 4:59:31 PM #44 | Xeybozn posted... Rod (Get Out) There's an argument to be made that Rod is the best comic relief character of all time. The simple appearance of this unsung hero of Get Out changes the entire dynamic & tone of the film, and absolutely revolutionizes the way character tropes are typically played out in horror media. Jordan Peele does not rest at leaving Rod to make some risque jokes and disappear from the movie, he doesn't make Rod show up to Chris' rescue only to immediately die, Peele instead makes Rod a true character and friend to Chris, someone who drives his own actions & the plot of the film to deliver a character, who, while not the main focus, is memorable & most importantly, actually likable. Hell, Rod is even in a position of power as a TSA agent, giving us a positive perspective in a movie that's pretty critical of police officers and similar occupations. The arrival of Rod at the end of the film even leaves us with the idea of hope rather than the bleaker ending that was originally intended. Rod just serves as a great illustration of how not to waste a second of screen time or a character that has the potential to be everyone's dark horse favorite. Rating: 7/10 --- |

Snake5555555555 07/09/20 12:46:02 AM #33 | BetrayedTangy posted... Gengar (Pokemon) Anyone who's played Pokemon for a long enough period of time is bound to notice some of the more darker elements of the franchise, often tucked away behind Pokedex entries or hidden in the subtext of random NPC dialogue. As the final evolution of Pokemon's first Ghost trio, Gengar easily stands out in the original 151 Pokedex as the poster child for Gen. 1 horror, whether it's trading a Haunter to get this evolution in the first place (a clever nod to getting rid of your "ghosts"), or as seen in the Pokemon anime chilling with his pre-evolution buddies in the backdrop of the Pokemon Tower, the launching point of 1000 Pokemon creepypastas. Gengar's Pokedex entries through each generation read grippingly as an escalating & compounding story of classic terror, going from mischievous trickster laughing at your fright into straight up stalking your shadow, chilling your very soul, and opening up a mouth portal straight into the afterlife, potentially even turning on its very trainer. To me, Gengar represents an early introduction into horror fiction & lore for children around the world, especially in its demonstration of spreading folklore through a word-of-mouth method. It's something I love to champion greatly, one, because I've been a horror obsessive since I was young myself, and two, because of its potential benefits in getting kids to open up and confront their fears head on. It may sound cheesy coming from a game ultimately about pitting cute animals against each other, but everything has its purpose, & if Gengar's is to bring a little darkness to said cute animal game, I'm 100% for it! Sydney Prescott (Scream films) Of course, Wes Craven's Scream, the monolithic, satirical horror film that practically informed nearly every mainstream horror film after it, needed its own version of "the final girl". Enter Neve Campbell, established television drama star, to play the final girl to end all final girls. Her role in the first Scream is rote & straight-forward, by design. She's one of the boys, all together sweet, a little dorky, & fun-loving until her life is turned upside down by a masked killer. It's what the sequels do after that really interests me. Scream 2 is my favorite Scream film for many reasons, and one of those definitely is the handling of Sidney's character. It examines the psychological toll of being one of the only survivors of a massacre and suddenly going from an ordinary girl to an overnight celebrity, with pressures from the media and the stigmata of being attached to such an event, even from friends & colleagues. Very rarely do slasher films portray this anguish and psychological trauma as well as Craven & writer Kevin Williamson do. It's brought even further in Scream 3, where she lives isolated and paranoid while working as a crisis counselor. This ultimately feeds into what really makes Sidney shine, which is her willingness to escape her victim status and rise up to be a hero for others even at the cost of herself. She's so much more than a final girl by the end of the original Scream trilogy, and you can trace that precisely as a through line evolution over the course of the series. I'll be the first to admit true character development in slasher films can be hard to find, but Sidney rises above those reservations and crafts a character that's as truly memorable as her scream-masked assailant. So the one thing that hurts Sam for me is that final segment of Trick r' Treat that reveals Sam's face as a weird demon thing and has him directly attacking someone. I will say I don't really like the demon face thing that much either, but I feel Sam attacking someone directly isn't totally out of character. He even kills some some totally innocent woman at the very beginning for tearing down Halloween decorations early. He just has a twisted sense of the rules & justice and the horrifying things he witnesses fulfills that sense for him. Just the way I see it anyway. --- |

Doubtful. As the residents of Hundred Acre Wood know minimally in passing, the Backson is responsible for, in no particular order & not limited to: tangling Christmas ornament hooks, swiping your stripes, making you sleep too late, and making you catch the cold you caught. A truly nightmarish entity in all sense of the word, and that's even without yet describing his monstrous, devilish appearance complete with horns, eviscerating teeth, and shaggy red hair. But wait... that's not it at all is it? Anyone who's seen Winnie 2011 knows what the real Backson is like, and it's a perfect example of how folklore & paranoia spreads so easily amongst a group when no one has even laid on eyes on the thing, and a great lesson of not judging others by their looks. A cute, simple lesson that fits perfectly into a children's movie like Winnie the Pooh, but one we could all learn and glean valuable information from too. Rating: 5/10 --- |

Snake5555555555 07/08/20 2:10:51 PM #18 | Great_Paul posted... Sam (Trick r Treat) It has always disappointed me that Sam has never quite gotten the traction he deserves out in the mainstream world of horror. He has the potential to seriously rival Halloween mainstays like Michael Myers & Jason Voorhees easily, ticking off all the boxes that make those characters timeless: recognizable design, straight-forward motives that encourage yearly viewings, & a twist on Halloween traditions everyone can relate to. On the same token though, I could definitely see why he hasn't. Michael & Jason have both gone on to represent "safe & sterile" versions of their former selves, far removed from the psychological dread they used to instill in general audiences. Sequels & retreads rob any character of that power eventually, and Sam would be no different. There's a much deeper sadism to Sam that makes him a bit harder to swallow than your typical glitzy Hollywood horror villain, especially in his child-like appearance. Michael Dougherty undeniably tapped into something powerful with Sam, at once a loving ode to the trick-o-treat era of our childhoods, that eternally lasting, ethereal power of the Halloween autumnal season, and even just a little dash of childlike psychopathy that's as sad as it is disturbing. So, as much as I would love to see Sam gain even more recognizability (and to be clear, I'm not saying he's like some totally obscure figure either), maybe we should leave him at the fringes of our minds, watching us silently as we drift in and out of Halloween traditions, encouraging us with a distant stare to never forget what made Halloween so special to us, albeit with a chocolate bar switchblade behind his back! Snake5555555555 07/08/20 1:42:11 PM #15 | Moonroof posted... The main girl character in It Follows I don't feel Jay Height is so much a fleshed out, complex character herself, as much as she more prominently fulfills the purpose of portraying an avatar for women around the world who go through much similar, psychologically damaging situations that are personified by the entity in the 2014 instant horror classic. Maika Monroe portrays the character simply as she needs to; an innocently sweet, upbeat woman changed in an instant by an uncaring asshole of a man, and that blank depressive state mixed with the constant terror & tension that follows her anywhere she goes now. It doesn't take a deep analysis to see this, but that's exactly what makes It Follows and Jay so universally appealing and it's what the best horror movies & protagonists should always strive to accomplish, reflections of modern society no matter how ugly that truth may be.
