The Crew is a cooperative trick-taking game with limited communication. The deck, rather than a standard fifty-two-card deck, consists of forty cards - four suits from 1 to 9 and one trump suit from 1 to 4. In a given hand - determined by a campaign log - you generally will draft objective cards at the beginning - i.e. you must win the trick containing that card. A hand ends as soon as all objectives are achieved (or one is failed).

If you've ever played trick-taking games like Hearts or Spades, you know the gameplay of The Crew, which is part of its effectiveness - these are games I grew up loving, and can often still enjoy more than hobby games outright due to their mindlessness, ease of play, and partnership. The Crew is fully cooperative, but of course it has some limited communication mechanics that make it pretty appealing.

The base game contains around fifty scenarios, and I've never brought out The Crew and not had people want to play more than one scenario. The simplicity and satisfying familiarity of the rules enable people to dive in quickly, and perhaps more importantly, the quick playtime of the game allows people to iterate and get better and progress. That's one of the great strengths of The Crew - the campaign gives you a constant sense of progress. Granted, I've never played with one group of friends enough to get more than twenty-ish missions deep, but to be even at that point is a win in my book for such a small-cost, small-box purchase.

The Crew is widely regarded as one of the best games of its weight class. And I think while it lacks some of the "hobby game" flavor that you might want, that accessibility can help it to get more reps, which is great for its utility.

yeah, the lighting for half the episode was near-unwatchable. had to turn off the lights in my room to watch it and it was still not super clear.

aquatope sounds interesting. not sure how i'd respond to the second half - the work drama sounds interesting but the actress being forced back for story's sake would be a downer to me

My strategy is pretty simple. The opener of CATER/CRATE/REACT/TRACE - which one based on what I'm feeling, despite them all having the same five letters - gives a wealth of information. There are three consonants that are easily combo-able and the two most common vowels. If none of these are in the puzzle, I go with SOUND - because this does the same thing with the next set of 3 and 2. If there's still nothing, MILKY is my third.

It's easy enough to find words that work for whatever you get using these words, and it practically guarantees, anomalies like PARER aside, getting the word in four or fewer guesses. A C may not be as common as an S, but whether the word has a C or not - and its potential positions - is important information. Today, for instance, getting the A in the middle position plus a C that's not in the 4th slot means there are very, VERY few possibilities, especially once I tried CHASM to ensure I got it in three.

I do hope that helps some of you get half of them in three or four words like I tend to do.

ah yeah, i'm generally fairly aware of the strategy for wordle - i just enjoy picking kind of wonky first words that may not necessarily be optimal. i often pick a slew of consonants like TRICK or BLITZ which is more likely to result in a guess like SOUND in round 2 because everything's missing

How have you all enjoyed Rings of Power by the way? I'm definitely interested in checking it out, but it feels like I've seen a lot of negativity around it. I don't know though if that's actually because of the quality or if it's just Twitter being Twitter.

i'd go in with low expectations. it's much more style than substance atm, but it has definite potential

also this is hardly an epiphany but i watched the goonies for the first time the other day, and it's striking how very directly it inspired stranger things. ST is like goonies meets ET.

People on the internet overrate how mainstream things on the internet are, generally. Do a random sampling of people on the street and I doubt they're swinging a lot more than 25% recognition either.

that's a fair point! i think i was fixated on the 10% or whatever the "definite" recognition was, but i guess the second category also counts as some sort of recognition

that said, i might expect them to track higher at different internet venues

i imagine that this board is pretty isolated from lots of mainstream culture and major subcultures though

aeon's end is better than dominion or ascension imo but i understand that it may not be your cup of tea

Well, okay.

I thought this episode was maybe the best so far? Adar is intriguing. Lil' bit of orc action ain't bad. Elendil is probably my favorite human character. And the end of the episode was pretty cool.

Also, more Elrond and Durin which should be an entire show itself. It's a little jarring how much more enjoyable that thread is than the others.

So far, the show is solid. It's not going to breach my top 5 for the year, doesn't touch GoT, but it's a good watch.

whew, wrapped requiem of innocence. overall feels completely unnecessary and bloated, but there were some pigment moments at the end. (i might add that those moments felt almost completely unearned - but i give the credit anyway)

the credits music is pretty great
