Oh Im not disagreeing that we definitely will need to do waves of lockdowns and keep social distancing until everything is contained. What these people are suggesting is that we keep every single American in their houses for 9 months straight without any breaks or reopening any businesses which is insane

well my hospital has officially made it a rule that every single employee no matter what has to wear a mask their whole shift which is nice. Also makes me wonder how theyre getting all these masks for like 20k employees!

To date, the SARS-CoV-2 genome has been considered genetically more stable than SARS-CoV or MERS-CoV. Here we report a 382-nt deletion covering almost the entire open reading frame 8 (ORF8) of SARS-CoV-2 obtained from eight hospitalized patients in Singapore. The deletion also removes the ORF8 transcription-regulatory sequence (TRS), which in turn enhances the downstream transcription of the N gene. We also found that viruses with the deletion have been circulating for at least four weeks. During the SARS-CoV outbreak in 2003, a number of genetic variants were observed in the human population [1], and similar variation has since been observed across SARS28 related CoVs in humans and bats. Overwhelmingly these viruses had mutations or deletions in ORF8, that have been associated with reduced replicative fitness of the virus [2]. This is also consistent with the observation that towards the end of the outbreak sequences obtained from human SARS cases possessed an ORF8 deletion that may be associated with host adaptation [1]. We therefore hypothesise that the major deletion revealed in this study may lead to an attenuated phenotype of SARS-CoV-2.

Well if this was around in October and November like reports are starting to say it makes me wonder about the sickness like half my family got in November. I was sick for three weeks with fever on and off and could barely move and had a nasty cough. Id feel fine one day and a day later Id be taken out again. Ended up testing negative for flu but they said it was just bronchitis. Same thing for my parents too, but my dad was sick until the beginning of January. My sister had the same thing in January as well, her cough is still around now too. God I hate this.

I work in the stat blood chemistry lab for the pathology department of the biggest hospital in the state. The microbiology lab is next door to mine and theyre handling coronavirus swabs while my department deals with testing for strep in throat cultures in those patients. I couldnt be happier that Im on maternity leave for another month
