Yuki Yuna is one of my favorite anime precisely because it was dark but not hyper-mega dark. I actually posted here while watching Madoka that it was okay but I wanted something just a touch lighter, and sure enough Yuki Yuna came along to save the day.

I agree they should've focused more on the gods. I was super intrigued when that concept was introduced because there were a lot of neat ways the three could move and play off of each other. There's a bit of that coming up but the one goddess really didn't matter much.

As for noro vs aradama fusion, there might be a difference between them but I don't really remember (one of the perils of watching a show as it airs, details get forgotten). I feel like there must be some downside because there were multiple times where they apologized for not yet knowing how to remove the aradama from the former elite guard members but I can only speculate on what that downside might be.

Katana Maidens spoilers They handle it really poorly but the vibe I got from Ayumu being injected with noro is that she and the others essentially lost their will to resist the evil goddess. At one point I think Yukina actually says they'd have no choice but to do what the evil god wanted so it was dumb that the one president was being choosy about subjects. The problem is, Ayumu really didn't change at all after the injection. It's one of my big complaints about the second cour, honestly. She's the exact same person as before, just happy that she's powerful enough to fight Kanami now. I think it would've carried a lot more weight if they played up the horror of what happened to her but oh well.

As for the motives of the bad humans, if you check the anime board for Katana Maidens topics you can see me whining every week about how dumb they were. It wasn't a problem in the first cour, possessed Yukari could realistically trick them, but in the second cour they're literally siding with a goddess whose stated goal is destroying humanity. I guess I'll just say that they never really address this problem and it's one of the big black marks I have against the second cour.

On the plus side, episode 20 and on, while still not perfect, had a lot more hype moments I felt.

Episode one of Island was alright. There were several pointless lewd moments that will probably bother certain people, but my only real complaint is that the whole thing felt kind of off. Like, the pacing and line-reading at times was just really off-putting for some reason that I can't quite put my finger on.

Still, I'm a sucker for time travel and weirdo mysteries and this seems to have both (or does it?!?) and some of the girls were cute. I predict this will be an anime that only I will watch and that I'll think it was fine.

Also, one of the girls is voiced by Nyarko-san!

Also since my ranking system was discussed earlier, I figured I may as well just post a full list if anyone is interested. Stuff shifts around semi-often as I watch more things and my opinions change over time but this is all mostly set in stone. This is 130 finished or near-finished anime, one still airing into next season, two I've only seen one season of that I intend to finish and one series of anime movies (making the list 134 total). I had to cut a few subtitles to fit it all in one post but they all should still be clear.

Should elaborate on Amanchu IMO Roba.

Sure! Spoilers for Amanchu S2 (though if you don't want the spoiler version, it mostly comes down to a bad arc and a terrible new character just straight-up ruining 2/3 of the season).

The biggest issue was the three episode dream arc... man that was terrible. It was like it wanted to be one of the supernatural Aria episodes, but those were only one episode each. They weren't a three episode mini-arc where Akari falls in love with the ghost of a teen who winds up being Mr. Mailman or some shit. Aria also took place on a futuristic Mars so outlandish things weren't as hard to swallow. Amanchu S1 was down-to-earth friendship moments and now S2 is introducing dream worlds and it just doesn't work. Four episodes out of twelve heavily featured dream shenanigans so already 33% of the season was garbage. Then we have Kokoro, who heavily feature in an additional four episodes, bringing the total for trash this season to a solid 66%. He's a standoffish little boy who didn't fit into the group dynamic at all, I hated him. Also, I'm not one of those people who expected Teko and Pikari to get into a lesbian relationship, that was never going to happen and I don't care if they find a love interest (honestly, that poor dude in the diving club could use some attention from someone other than his sister). But when the show tries to ship Pikari, one of my favorite anime characters, with a terrible little boy... no, I'm sorry Amanchu S2, you've lost me forever. The remaining four episodes were okay I guess but I just can't get past the flaws.

Mac Arrowny posted...
Also you should post your favorite character(s) of the season.

Hitomi, Anzu, and Hina from Hinamatsuri, Aoi from Kakuriyo, Nanbu from MegaloBox, and Asirpa from Golden Kamuy were the ones new to this season to reach my top 100 anime characters. Asirpa was my favorite.

Mac Arrowny posted...
holy shit why is episode 18's animation so bad please tell me it gets better in later eps again

Yeah, the quality comes and goes a bit in the second cour but that's just them saving the budget for a few neat moments to really make them count. I'm bad at noticing quality stuff in general though.

that seems like way too many low scores. why don't you just drop shows earlier?

i rarely end up with scores below 5 because i don't want to spend the time watching a show that's that bad.

It's mostly just a quirk of how I rank things. I have ten anime at 10/10, ten at 1/10. Fifteen at both 9/10 and 2/10, seventeen at both 8/10 and 3/10, and so on (though I haven't quite filled out the middle ranks yet). I try to keep it all even, and this way the truly good shows slowly rise as I watch more things and bad shows slowly fall. I don't mind finishing junk sometimes because at least it fills out the lower ranks, otherwise actual good shows might eventually get pushed down to 2/10.

The numeric rankings are a bit misleading though. Anything above 2/10 is something I was at least glad to have watched.

GranzonEx posted...
Roba uses the full range of scores but I find it hard to believe Grancrest and FranXXX are that bad

FranXX I'll admit is probably just an irrational burning hatred, but Grancrest really was just a bad anime. I don't even hate it, it just wasn't good.

Aggretsuko (2/10)
Aggretsuko was, much like Devilman last season, a good anime that just... didn't do anything for me. I didn't hate it, it just failed to resonate with me on such a level that I have no real opinion about it. This is the dividing line between shows that had at least some good qualities and shows that I really didn't like.

Amanchu S2 (2/10)
I loved the first season of Amanchu, it was a solid 9/10. Sadly, this second season somehow managed to screw everything up. Instead of focusing on fun friendship and diving adventures, this season instead introduced weird supernatural aspects and an awful little kid who dragged down every scene they were in. I'm angry at myself for watching this season because it honestly soured my opinion on Amanchu forever.

Tada Never Falls in Love (2/10)
This is a romantic comedy with mediocre comedy and a romance that was half underdeveloped, half mind-numbingly standard. The side characters were also some of the most superfluous, annoying people I've ever seen. The main story might've actually had a chance at being okay if entire episodes weren't wasted on those jokers.

Magical Girl Site (2/10)
This is an anime that revels in torturing its characters, so I'm honestly surprised that I liked it even this much. It helped that it was so over-the-top grim, right from the start, that it immediately became a parody of itself, meaning I couldn't take it seriously. I also actually liked a few of the characters, especially the fun idol girl. Still, since I'm a person who likes to watch things to have fun, and this anime set out to be no fun at all, this score was probably as good as it could've hoped for.

Record of Grancrest War (second cour) (1/10)
My main issue with the first half of Grancrest was the absurd pacing, and the second half definitely didn't fix that. However, it also introduced a whole bunch of new problems that further dragged the anime down. The animation frequently fell apart, there were info-dumps galore, and the already bland characters found new ways to become uninteresting. This was kind of fun in the first cour when it acted like a mindless Dynasty Warriors ripoff but this second half was too janky to even have that going for it.

Darling in the FranXX (second cour) (1/10)
I have literally no good things to say about this anime. Instead of listing everything in a big rant, just consider any aspect of the show and assume that I hated it. Yes, even Zero-Two. Especially Zero-Two.

Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits (ongoing) (6/10)
I have a soft spot for slice-of-life anime that incorporate spiritual elements, like Urara Meirocho and especially Konohana Kitan, and Kakuriyo scratches that same itch even though it isn't anywhere near as good as those other examples. It manages to incorporate the food porn elements into the characters and plot, which I appreciate since food porn on its own is the worst thing ever. Aoi is also a great main character, I love how she isn't a fan of being forced to marry an ogre and is trying to find a way out of it. I'd appreciate it if the plot had a bit more tension and the pacing was a bit faster, but right now I'm happy enough just having a spiritual anime to look forward to every week.

Last Period: Journey to the End of Despair (5/10)
I'll go ahead and be the first one to admit that Last Period is a super lame show. I mean, it's set in one of those ripoff mobile phone games and a lot of plot events and humor are derived from that concept. However, being lame it also what makes it so hilarious. Choco breaking the fourth wall whenever they meet another palette-swapped mayor was great, for example. Wiseman was also the best and I looked forward to seeing them do their dumb intro every episode like this decade's Team Rocket. If you want lame humor that knows not to take itself seriously, look no further than Last Period.

Umamusume: Pretty Derby (4/10)
I have a soft spot for things that are fun, and, despite its flaws, Umamusume was a lot of fun. It wasn't that great as a sports anime, only one or two characters really got any meaningful development, and a lot of the gags were merely okay. However, an anime about horse girls who eat a bunch of carrots and then run in a race and then sing an idol concert after... it's so dumb but it's also fun. That said, it could've been a lot better if it were more competent in other regards so I guess it'll have to be happy with a 4/10.

Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online (4/10)
This anime was fine, I enjoyed watching LLENN during the gunfights and some of the jokes were great (Fuka was amazing). Still, the plot didn't take itself seriously and the comedy just wasn't good enough overall to make up for that. I also really hated how they wrote a few characters, particularly Pito. Basically, I thought this was an okay anime but it wasn't some huge step up from the original SAO like a lot of people seem to think. It's nowhere near the awful lows of the original's fairy arc, but I'd actually rank this season below every other arc in the original SAO without even thinking too hard about it.

Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku (3/10)
This anime started strong, I thought, so I was sad to see how far it fell as the season progressed. After their intriguing early development, the characters entered a kind of stasis, and actually managed to regress in some ways You already kissed her Hirotaka stop fretting about this for fucks sake. Not only that, but the animation became super boring, often having the characters reacting in front of a blank background. I also hated the introduction of Hirotaka's brother. I still remember how bored I was during a five minute scene that was nothing but the characters clicking buttons on a controller while badly narrating how he was failing at Smash Bros.

Comic Girls (2/10)
This is the worst Cute Girls Doing Cute Things anime that I have ever seen. The main character, Kaos, never failed to annoy me by... well, always failing at everything. That was literally her only joke, and this was a problem for the rest of the cast too. They all had one tired aspect that got trotted out for tired jokes, over and over. The only reason this didn't rank lower was because cute girls doing cute things still has a certain charm even when it's done poorly, but I didn't like it.

#201
I wrote some stuff about Spring 2018 anime. If anyone even remembers my Winter write-ups, these are a lot less polished than those were. I didn't bother describing the plot of the shows or anything, these are just random, spoiler-free opinions. I'd be happy to discuss any of these shows more if anyone is interested, so go ahead and ask if you are! Also, once again, to the people who don't care, I apologize for the incoming four huge posts.

Hinamatsuri (9/10) Anime of the Season
Hinamatsuri is an amazing comedy, always finding new ways to put its fun characters into absurd situations. Hitomi was my favorite character but there honestly wasn't a weak link anywhere in the entire cast. Whether it was Hina lazing about, Anzu's heartwarming qualities, or Nitta just trying to keep his vases safe, Hinamatsuri never failed to put a smile on my face. This was the anime I looked forward to the most every week, so I'm happy to give it the coveted Robazoid's Anime of the Season award!

My Hero Academia S3 (ongoing) (8/10)
MHA overall is a 10/10 for me, but that doesn't mean an individual season will necessarily rank that high. There isn't anything wrong with MHA S3, it still has great characters, awesome fight scenes against cool villains, and emotional plot developments. I guess MHA is just a 'greater than the sum of its parts' thing for me, so this 8/10 season somehow adds into the 10/10 overall.

Katana Maidens (second cour) (8/10)
I really loved the first half of Katana Maidens and I will defend that first cour forever, despite its flaws. The second half, though, even I admit it had problems. There was never a point where it became bad or anything like that, it just failed to live up to the first half or even the potential of its own ideas. Plot elements that should've carried a lot of weight fell flat, for example, and quite a few situations within the main conflict didn't really make a whole lot of sense. With all of that said, I still love Katana Maidens. There were several hype moments in this second half, and it ended decently. Still, that isn't enough for it to remain a 10/10, and I've retroactively revoked its Anime of the Season award to instead give that to Laid-Back Camp. Also, I hope anyone that might've been interested in this show still gives it a chance and doesn't write it off now that the one fan on B8 said a few negative things about it! It's still a lot of fun, it just wasn't perfect and probably won't win anyone over if they don't think they'd enjoy it.

MegaloBox (6/10)
As much as I enjoyed MegaloBox, I still felt there were a lot of flaws holding it back. Most of the fights were formulaic and the main plot itself was rather predictable. Still, MegaloBox shone when it came to setting up character motivations and instilling their actions with emotion, and that was what I enjoyed most about it. The animation and choreography of the characters punching each other wasn't impressive, but it still managed to make me care about who would win and how they'd do it. Good execution like that is worth a lot for me!

Golden Kamuy (6/10)
I've seen the complaints about this anime, and... yeah, it felt low budget at times and the animation wasn't always the best. For people who like manga, reading the manga is probably the better way to go for this story. I don't read manga, however, so I stuck with it and enjoyed the ride! Asirpa was a great character and her dynamic with Sugimoto was always a lot of fun. I also appreciated how the show had a consistent goal regarding the search for the convicts and the gold, even though the opposing factions became muddy at times. This was an exciting adventure and I'm happy it's getting a second season.
