except that playing it later years down the line is always cheaper because all the expacs are bundled together, and you aren't being gated by time for the next update (which translates into sub fee $)

Yes, Sakurai literally listed the rules it takes for a character to be in smash, and the main one I remember was that they have to be originally from a video game, no movie or t.v. show characters.

And they have to have been on a Nintendo system at one point

even if this is true, one would hope Sakurai wouldn't leave money on the table by excluding an iconic character like Goku from SSBU
