In TFA, he's bleeding out from a bowcaster wound, toys with Finn and demolishes him, forces Rey to retreat backwards (and is trying to turn her, not kill her). In TLJ, he slaughters almost the entire throne room with little help. He gets owned by Luke's projection, which is the result we'd expect. But there was a natural progression to this new force power, with Luke projecting across space, rain passing from Rey's environment to Kylo's glove, and the necklace and the helmet in TRoS. Whatever disorganization there was behind the scenes, they managed to weave together something coherent when it came to these force powers. Rey showing aptitude with the force was somewhat explained by Snoke in TLJ when he says that the light side of the force raised a champion to meet the dark.
