Just a quick fyi on those - the "depth" refers to the difficulty. Mobs you've seen before will have more hp and deal more damage in depth 5 than in depth 1. Some bosses are absolute bs in the dungeons.

The root dungeons are just to add extra difficulty and you never need to enter one unless you need more communion materials.

I've never actually summoned another person into my world, only allowed myself to be summoned into others a few times. So I might be wrong with that detail.

And yes. "The bell-ringing women rings a sinister bell" will always make me tense up.

Tl;dr - women who ring bells are the absolute worst and must be killed ASAP. Doing co-op makes one of these jerks spawn in the area you're in.



With respect to co-op, it's done a lot differently than souls, and is actually the one area where i think it's the weakest of the series. You may come across npc's that can be summoned and have their marks on the ground. Actually, i think you already have, when you accidentally summoned one in central Yharnam before defeating vicar Amelia.

When you summon anyone into your world, you'll get the following message - "A bell ringing woman rings a sinister bell." Now, to summon someone besides an NPC, you must first ring a bell that you've bought with insight from the insight messengers of the dream. And that woman will appear before you even summon someone.

You'll also get that message in some areas before even ringing a bell or summoning someone. Off the top of my head, one of these areas is the nightmare realm where you fought amygdala.

The reason that the bell ringing woman matters is because the only worlds that can be invaded are ones where a sinister bell is ringing. So if you summon someone for co-op, you can be invaded, until you find the woman and kill her. She spawns in the same spot every time she appears, but that spot tends to be well- hidden within an area.

I've actually only ever summoned npc's into my world, but I've allowed myself to be summoned into other worlds a handful of times.

Lastly, there's one more thing to make co-op in bloodborne even more confusing. You found the executioners garb in Cainhurst. You also found the Vileblood register.

Some lore spoilers below:
Alfred, an NPC that you met before going into the forbidden woods, is an executioner. The vilebloods are his mortal enemies. Back when the Healing Church was gaining in power, they found out about Cainhurst, whose nobles were using the blood of a different mystical being than the Church, and the Church couldn't stand for that heresy. So they sent in the executioners.

What this means from a gameplay perspective is that each faction is another covenant, the League being one you already discovered. If you are either of the executioners or vilebloods and you are summoned into the world of the other for co-op, the game says "nope" and you're actually summoned as an invader.

Lastly, back to normal co-op summoning. It costs an insight to summon someone else for co-op. The only thing you really get for being summoned is blood echoes of enemies that are killed. It's not like dark souls where there's much of a reward.
