Also I think it's really funny that 6-6 really plays up this whole idea of like, it's Phoenix/Maya vs Edgeworth! For old time's sake! But literally the only cases in which the three characters were all in the same courtroom together, regardless of role, were 1-2, 1-3, and 1-4, and 1-3 was the only case where none of them were on trial. It's crazy when you think back on it and you realize that Turnabout Samurai is like, THE classic Ace Attorney case.

I'm still of the opinion that it would be more interesting to follow Apollo's adventures restoring his father's old law firm in Khura'in, which is still a huge task he has ahead of him despite of how far he's come - Justice is still far from restored in Khura'in, after all! - than it would be to follow, uh, Phoenix and Athena in whatever they're doing. I dunno though, I still kinda wonder if they just don't have any ideas of what to do now.

It is funny by the way how much this game totally reclaims Apollo's character - it makes sense for Anagram to be skeptical of how this game starts dropping Apollo backstory elements in, given how much Apollo got the short straw in AA5, only being playable for one filler case and getting a very small backstory thing with Clay Terran, and this game just decided to completely sell out to redeem his character arc and in my opinion, it worked. By the end of this game Apollo had surpassed Phoenix for me

Yeah, 6-5 has slowly and steadily worked its way up to my favorite case in the series. When you first beat it, it's not all that overwhelming, but the more you sit and think about it, the more you realize that it was super high-octane from start to finish and had multiple really really high points, the best of which is definitely the Dhurke reveal. I think it's the one time in AA5 or AA6 that they had a massive reveal like this during a court segment and didn't have the character think out loud to the player "boy I wonder if this happened" before making the player choose it. There's no lead up to it and you have to put it together completely on your own.
It's actually a little bit haunting that the words are basically coming out of Apollo's mouth before he's even really emotionally processed it - it hits really hard on a second playthrough that he's going through the motions of explaining what happened and then only breaks down afterwards

By the way, has it clicked for you yet that the game is called spirit of JUSTICE

I said in spoiler tags earlier that I thought it's really funny that everyone thinks 6-5 is going to switch to Phoenix at some point and it never does (aside from one brief investigation segment with him and Edgeworth just for fanservice's sake), even though in retrospect it's really obvious that this was set up to be Apollo's story. 6-2 was important for establishing Apollo has truly risen to the ranks of Phoenix's successor (which is, as you'll notice, a blatantly recurring theme throughout the game - pretty clever how even 6-4 echoes the themes that will run through 6-5 imo), then in 6-3 they drop that little hint that Apollo used to live in Khura'in with Dhurke, but even at that point it's not obvious that they're really going to take the story from Phoenix and give it to Apollo at the end. Even though the game is called Spirit of Justice.

Nahyuta is really bad, yes, but the other thing that drags down 6-5 for me a bit (it's still very good, dont get me wrong) is Amara. I came away from the case genuinely unable to tell how the game wanted me to feel about her, which is a problem when she's such a big part of the case and multiple characters' motivations. Does she care about Dhurke or Nahyuta any more? Did she actually believe Dhurke tried to kill her? Is she cooperating with Ga'ran or too naive to realize she is very obviously being used? Is she oblivious or actively malevolent? Maybe some of these have answers that I'm forgetting but I was shocked that after a certain point she just kind of disappeared from the case.
Yeah this is unfortunately my biggest problem with the case too. After she gets shot we never see Amara again and we never get an answer from her whether or not she's come to terms with her contradictory feelings about Dhurke - I was really expecting a scene with Apollo and Amara at the end to clear up some shit but we never got that, despite the fact that they share a common thread in Dhurke. But she literally doesn't have a single line after she gets shot until we see her during the ending montage.

6-5 is still my favorite case in the series but it's a little unfair because it's basically 2 cases in one and both cases are really good. The first half is on its own a fantastic case, with the civil trial vs Phoenix and Paul Atishon and Apollo/Dhurke character building and all that (all of it is SO SAD in retrospect - remember how prickly Apollo was to Dhurke?). But then the Dhurke twist in the second half is probably the AA series' crowning moment imo - they do such an excellent job developing Dhurke's character in such a short time, and they do an excellent job of hiding the twist until it comes and punches you right in the gut. I thought it was flawlessly executed.

Yeah I agree with this

AJ tells you who his mom is and therefore who his sister is, but not really any of the circumstances of his birth or childhood

DD tells you... about a friend that he once had but that's it, I don't even think it makes sense to say that this was "randomly thrown in as backstory", like, we wouldn't necessarily know about every friend Apollo has, there are definitely people Phoenix knows that we've never heard of too. Though I DO agree that AJ and DD didn't really know what to do with Apollo, but that's a separate issue

I get the sense that even for a Japanese audience the rakugo theme required some explanation and some 'transporting into an unfamiliar world' since probably not everyone's familiar with it so that helped a bit I think, there's a lot of natural points in the script for them to kind of help ease the player into the idea of rakugo.

6-4 100% fucking slaps. Uendo Toneido is one of my favorite witnesses, the whole rakugo theme is just really funny and interesting once you get over the obvious localization challenges, Blackquill is an MVP, even Nahyuta is at his funniest in this case. There's a bunch of fun little murder mystery tricks, I like that the whole thing takes place as one long court segment, and THE MURDER WEAPON WAS UDON DOUGH is so bad it's good. I love how it takes place as an intermission between the heaviness of 6-3 and the finale, and it serves that role perfectly.

I mean the scene with Iris in the credits seems to imply that they're trying to work on rekindling the old flame!

And it would actually be very much in-character for Phoenix for him to accept her anyway, especially since he basically says as much at the end of 3-5 with "You really are the person I always thought you were."
Ehh, I guess it might kinda imply, but I still got a mostly "they're moving on" vibe from the whole thing. Phoenix can believe in Iris being a good person but still want to move on!

I think this might just as much be a problem with AA4 completely blowing up all of Phoenix's relationships and AA5 and AA6 having to slowly repair them though

Iris and Phoenix's relationship is 100% over after the events of AA3 and they both know it, I really don't see any intent from either of them to try to patch that one up, especially not from Phoenix's end which would be pretty damn weird if you think about it considering what Iris was complicit in putting him through. (She might be in jail anyway)

Phoenix and Maya are extremely just-friends and I think that's wonderful

Face it, the natural love interests here are Phoenix and Edgeworth, but they're gonna queerbait us on that one to the end of time

I love 6-3 - the biggest weakness of it is the pointlessness of Anonymous TBD's testimony and how it really leads nowhere and means nothing in the end (kind of the point of the whole sham trial but it doesn't even really come back to do anything in the end which it should - if a useless testimony takes up a lot of time it should be a Chekov's gun imo, it should reveal some important detail that cracks the case when you least expect it), and the way that after you lose the first trial Phoenix and Maya just get off scot-free. I always felt that they should have fixed this by starting with Phoenix in prison on day 2, and Rayfa shows up and says that she talked to her father and got Phoenix out of prison on the condition that he take her investigating some more, since it would do a really nice job of a) explaining how Phoenix was allowed to roam freely when he should have been imprisoned and b) plays into how Rayfa is mad tsundere for Phoenix. (minor spoilers) It also sets up that Inga has a soft spot for Rayfa through showing and not telling which would have been a nice touch

Other than that it's great. It has the stakes of an epic case, it really puts Phoenix in the thick of the whole Khura'in mess and has him do his Phoenix thing to create a turnabout in even the most dire circumstances, when everyone's against him, and even though Maya's in trouble again I still think it's a great way to reintroduce her. Both diviniation seances are absolute show-stealers imo, I love how both of them so cleverly set up misconceptions about the murder and how Tahrust was able to abuse its flaws to create a nearly unsolvable murder case. And after all these years, getting to see Maya FINALLY use her powers to channel a random victim is an incredible catharsis. I never expected that Tahrust Inmee, the victim, would actually be the most important witness in the case, and everything from the point when he shows up onwards is a series highlight for me.

I still vastly prefer physical when it comes to Nintendo. Nintendo is BETTER about digital game rights than they used to be but they still give you the runaround a little bit - I'm kind of pissed because I had to buy a Switch Lite because there were no non-Lites available for sale due to the pandemic, but you can't just like, have two Switches, with all your games on each one, you have to have it so that one of them needs to connect to the internet every time you want to play your games. Carts remove this problem (unless it's Animal Crossing of course). Besides that, you also can't resell digital games, and the storage space on the Switch is still just not viable enough to keep an extensive library on, and for all of this, the consumer sees none of the reduction in cost of manufacturing. Physical games just have better value - if Nintendo would drop the price of their games by even a couple of bucks I might see things differently, because really otherwise I would be in favor of digital games, there is no reason to waste so much plastic and paper.
