Fallen Kingdom finished the weekend at $148 million, down from three years ago but still a very respectable opening given the large family-film overlap with Incredibles. Combined it was the second largest weekend of the year so far in the US, behind only April 27th (when Infinity War launched). Fun facts:

- movies opened to over $100 million dollars back-to-back for only the second time ever. the last time was way back in May 2007 when Shrek The Third was followed up by Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (both of which finished around $120 million)

- we've locked up the record for highest-grossing June ever at the American box office... and this past month + Avengers has us on a record-setting pace for the entire year as well. we've just crossed the 6 billion dollar mark overall, the previous best at this point in the year was only 5.5 billion

- Fallen Kingdom will probably hold on fine domestically... but even if it doesn't it won't matter much as it's a certified smash hit internationally. the movie's already up to $800 million worldwide meaning it will have no trouble becoming the 35th film to crack the 1 Billion Dollar Club

Very strong opening for Jurassic World at just under $60 million on Friday, putting it on pace for somewhere around the $150 million mark for the weekend. There was some excitement over the possibility of the first ever weekend with two different movies hitting 100+, but doesn't look like Incredibles will quite get there (should finish in the 80s which is still a nice hold, given the competition).

In milestone news Deadpool 2 hit the 300 million dollar mark today, and Incredibles will get there (and pass it to take the #2 spot for the Summer) tomorrow.

Everyone knows I selected the internet's 32 finest smiles... but am I actually any good at knowing which are Best? To find out I filled out a prediction bracket before launching this Contest. The results: I went 12-4 in Round One. My mistakes were...

- I had Alison Brie > Jenna Coleman. Jenna's 100% adorable but every boy who's watched an episode of Community is in love with Alison, and love is blind? apparently not (or else not as many have seen Alison's TV appearances as I expected), though to be fair I expected this to be close either way

- I had Kristen Bell > Jang Yewon. similar situation; killer smile for Jang but the internet's had a major crush on Kristen ever since Veronica Mars and I thought it would be just enough to get her over the hump

- I had Denise Richards > Emilia Clarke. she had a powerhouse Season One but I felt like people had soured somewhat on Dany as a character since then and it would translate to some anti-votes, especially in the face of the pure nostalgia of Wild Things. again this was very close, I just saw it tipping the other way

- I had Emma Stone > Victoria Justice... and I didn't think it would even be close. uhhhhhh, frankly this one I still don't get. how do you vote THIS out B8?!

Yowza, it ended up being an ever better weekend for Incredibles than that big Friday indicated. Final numbers are in and I2 hit $183 million, destroying the old animated film record of $135. That's good for the 8th largest opening ever domestically (edging out Civil War). As I mentioned the movie continued to strength every day thanks to the family appeal; it was only the 14th largest Friday but then 10th biggest SAT and 6th highest-grossing Sunday.

Fallen Kingdom arrives on Friday and though it's not going to match Jurassic World's Earth-shattering opening ($208 million) it might get close, which could result in an all-timer of a combined weekend given how well Incredibles 2 is likely to hold up. Should be exciting!
