Ocean's 8

"Anything men can do, we can do better." The theme of female remakes/reboots keeps right on rolling as George Clooney's sister Sandra Bullock assembles her own crack team of super-thiefs to pull off the heist of the century: stealing a $150 million diamond off the neck of the world's most famous actress (Anne Hathaway) at the Met Gala. Her crew? Cate Blanchett, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna, Awkwafina, Helena Bonham Carter, and Dakota Fanning.

For all the hate 2016's Ghostbusters received online it still went on to make a very respectable chunk of change (about $230 million worldwide), which wasn't enough to put it into the positives only because it was way too expensive to make (costing nearly $150 million). Ocean's 8 isn't going to have that problem and I think between that and the very smartly counter-programmed release date, women are going to turn out to this one in droves and turn it into a big time hit. Which is wonderful since I've always been a sucker for heist flicks and the trailer looks great- count me in, ladies!

Incredibles 2

Having to wait 14 years for this is undoubtedly the most absurd scheduling decision in Disney history, especially considering they talked Pixar into making two Cars movies in the meantime despite no one asking for them... but let's put all that behind us because it's finally here! Mr. Incredible struggles with becoming a stay-at-home Dad when Elastigirl is promoted to the status of world's #1 super hero. (Will Samuel L. Jackson agree to be his Tully?)

The whole cast is back including legendary writer/director Brad Bird, and I couldn't be more excited! The addition of Breaking Bad alums Bob Odenkirk and Jonathan Banks is a nice touch as well. Basically I would be SHOCKED if this isn't the best movie of the Summer, and I'd be equally surprised if it didn't have the blockbuster results to back that up.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

A volcano or something is set to blow up Dinosaur Island, and only Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard can save these noble (genetically modified, shouldn't exist in the first place, ate hundreds of people) creatures!

2015's Jurassic reboot was... perfectly fine. No one's a bigger Chris Pratt fan than myself and he was the right choice for the role, it had some incredible action sequences and all the dinos looked pretty good. All that being said, I didn't see a need to return to that world so soon. Universal Pictures saw it another way, and when you consider World's eye-popping numbers it's hard to blame them: it finished its run as the 3rd biggest movie in history, both domestically and internationally (behind only Titanic and Avatar). In summary, I'll be in the theater opening weekend, crossing my fingers that they came up with a more compelling script than the trailer would lead us to believe.

Deadpool 2

Now you can see why no male-centric movies wanted to release in May, would have been put in quite the Marvel pinch! Anyways so yeah, deadly time-traveling super solider Cable shows up and Deadpool has to form his own "super duper team" to answer the threat, rest assured many hijinks result.

FOX took a huge risk on Deadpool two years ago; everyone said super hero movies had to be serious, PG-13 (because they couldn't survive without teen boys filling the seats), and that only the MCU was strong enough to center them around lesser-known characters. Then DP1 went out and became the highest grossing R rated film of all time, the first successful superhero/comedy mashup, and even outgrossed every other mutant slash X-Men movie, including Wolverine's stand alone hits! Deadpool's humor doesn't always land for me but I love what he's done to lighten up the comic book genre so I'll be there opening weekend to support the dude.

Solo: A Star Wars Story

Everyone's favorite smuggler gets his first starring role; we take a deep dive into the past to see how a young Han Solo met his friends Chewie and Lando and got his hands on the Millennium Falcon.

The main trilogy will conclude next Christmas, until then we're back to the "off brand" Star Wars anthology series. Positives: Rogue One was way better than I expected, Donald Glover is the perfect choice for a young Lando, and having Woody Harrelson and Emilia Clarke involved is certainly promising (as is Ron Howard in the director's seat). Negatives: I can't get over how un-Harrison Ford this guy is! I'll still check out Solo on opening weekend and hope the rest of the film is good enough to make up for Han's casting, but in the meantime I'm going to stay very conservative with my box office pred.

Action Point

Here's another week the rival studios avoided like the plague, and between Star Wars and the second weekend/tail end of two surefire comic book hits you can't blame them. Left to pick up the pieces is... Johnny Knoxville?! He stars in an '80s teen flick throwback about the world's most dangerous theme park where (of course) he and his friend Chris Pontius perform all the stunts.

Jackass may have debuted almost 20 years ago, but idiots injuring themselves in ridiculous ways is timeless. If anyone had doubts on that matter they should have been assuaged by the shockingly successful Bad Grandpa a few years back. I can't see this one becoming the same kind of breakout hit, and I won't be rushing to the theater to get tickets myself, but I do dig the goofy Wet Hot American Summer-style vibe so I'll probably catch it when it comes to Netflix.

Wow, what a season it's going to be at the theater- not one but THREE Marvel superhero blockbusters, a new Star Wars, the most anticipated Pixar release ever, and a sequel to the third-largest box office draw the world's ever seen! That's worthy of a Summer Movie Preview IMO... and if someone keeps this thread alive we could use it to discuss the latest Hollywood excitement all season long, how nice would that be?

Avengers: Infinity War

Ten years later... it all comes down to this. After spending the last decade hunting down stones across the galaxy Thanos finally arrives on Earth, and all factions of the Marvel universe (the Avengers, the Guardians, Strange's sorcerers, the armies of Wakanda, Spiderman's quiz team) must unite to stop him.

Well, what more is there to say about this franchise? This is the 19th film in the shared universe and audiences certainly don't seem to be growing fatigued, considering Movie #18 just blew past Titanic to become the third biggest hit in the history of US cinema. The only question is if it can threaten The Force Awakens for biggest opening weekend, and how many Star Wars films it'll be able to knock off while climbing the lifetime charts all Summer long. All I can say for sure is that I'll be a dead ringer for our grizzled new Captain America when I hit the theater in full costume on opening night.

Tully

Rival studios knew Disney was going to land an extinction-level crater on their box office dreams in early May, so no one wanted to put out a new movie this week. That means instead of another standard blockbuster we get a heartfelt Summer indie with Oscar hopes, which is fun in itself! Won't make any money but hey- nice change of pace.

Writer Diablo Cody (of Juno fame) reunites with Charlize Theron to tell the story of an exhausted mother of three whose life is turned around by the night nanny her husband hires named Tully (played by Mackenzie Davis, aka the girl you fell in love with in Black Mirror's San Junipero). Seems like a pretty typical slice-of-life indie drama/comedy, but as someone who loved Juno and Young Adult I still think it could be worth seeing. If the reviews are positive I'll be sure to give this a chance.

Life of the Party

After being stunned by a divorce after 20 years of marriage, Melissa McCarthy decides the only way to get her life back on track is to return to college to complete her degree. And for some reason she has to join her daughter's sorority to do it. Can you just imagine?!

Alright so yes, Old School did this 15 years ago (continuing the trend of gender swapped reboots- more on that later) and this new version of the same idea doesn't look especially original or gut-busting. But this movie's not for us, and honestly McCarthy is perhaps the most reliably bankable star in Hollywood right now. I won't be lining up to see this one but everything she stars in finds a big audience with older female viewers and I doubt this will be an exception.

That's the thing, you could have just said that the evil scientist found a way to destroy the world the kaiju didn't know about and gave them the idea or something. Instead they added an awkward retcon.

Yes, that would have been a smart way to play it.

It's also worth noting that in this movie about robots fighting kaiju, there's one robot vs kaiju fight.

Okay, buuuuut it's like 30 minutes long, in two stages!

I think I'm starting to hate China because of this. This movie in particular is bombing even over there, but they just have the worst taste in American movies.

Whaaaa, that's not right. Estimates are that it did about $65 million in China this weekend, that's up over 20 million from the original and it will have no problem smashing the last film's total run there.

It didn't bomb in America either- did about $28 million versus expectations in the low 20s. That's down from the original's opening and it won't match the overall run here, but the foreign box office will easily make up for the deficit.

(In general though I agree with you, the movies China goes nuts for are usually pretty awful.)

I liked it, certainly wasn't revolutionary or anything but as a big dumb blockbuster it was a fun ride!

- It's 'revealed' that the motive of the kaiju was never to destroy cities, they were always just trying to reach Mt. Fuji where they could make the volcano erupt and destroy all human life, and the cities just happened to be in the way. But the portal they came out of in the first movie was in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. How do you end up in San Francisco or LA or Sydney when you're trying to reach Japan? We see that the kaiju just know where Tokyo is and don't need directions, so it makes absolutely no sense.

You're right, tearing up California instead of all converging on Japan last movie didn't make any sense. That being said, I did like that the kaiju had a sensible goal this time (terraforming the Earth with enough massive volcanic activity to end humanity).

- The robots are way less imaginative this time around. In the first one they all had distinctive designs, like the sleek Chinese one and the giant bulky Russian one. In this one, they're all sleek. The only way you can tell them apart at a distance is by color.

Colors and also each of the 4 had their own unique weapon. I was fine with the mechs, it was the kaiju looking so similar/not having their own unique powers and weak points that was disappointing for me.

- CGI is worse than the original. In the original, they wisely had most of the fights at night in the rain or something so you couldn't see the imperfections. In this movie, all of the fights are just straight up in the middle of the day and the robots look, again I have to say it, like they're from Transformers.

Have to disagree here, I paid a bunch of money to see robots punch things on a 70 foot screen and I want to see ALL of it! I agree hiding some of your GCI wizardry behind rain/darkness is effective for realism, it's been done well before (such as in Jurassic Park) but I'm not watching a Pacific Rim movie for the realism.

- In the first movie, they put a lot of effort into not destroying the cities they fight in, like that scene where the jaegar steps over a bridge instead of destroying it. In this movie, a jaegar pulls out swords and runs through a city cutting through buildings on the way to the monster just because it looks cool.

I'm 100% with you on this, it did get pretty absurd. "How many buildings do I have to pull down onto this thing?!" I laughed when they tried to put a fig leaf on it with a line saying "don't worry all the Japanese people are now safe in their bunkers so you can go nuts" literally five seconds after showing us a scene of people running for their lives in the streets and getting locked out of those bunkers.

- Lots of really awkward pandering to China. China is the most important country in the world and is the only useful force against the kaiju, everyone in China is attractive, smart, and heroic, etc. It's like in Transformers 4 where the entire movie is in Texas, and then they go to Hong Kong for virtually no reason.

Welllll the Chinese THOUGHT they were brilliant masterminds but really they *spoiler warning* were getting played by "that idiot non-Mandarin speaking" Newt and had to suicide their 100 beautiful new mechs after they went rogue and the American bots had to save the day. But yes point taken, China does get shown as the superpower with all the coolest new tech, which makes sense as this movie exists almost entirely because it was a huge hit in China (much like every Transformers since #2).

Sure, Mario and Link will be introduced to a new generation of gamers every few years so it's not too difficult to stay relevant/popular, but it's pretty wild how Mega Man/Seph/Crono continued to fend off tough challengers for years despite not having any influence with the younger crowd. Both were incredible streaks in their own way, but I think I'll have to side with the #1s.

Sure, they always had the more talented players, but these aren't hardened professionals we're talking about here- they were 18 and 19 year old boys who could easily have been cocky and overconfident, or frozen up and choked under pressure when the biggest moments arrived. Yes, they were playing against unknown guys without NBA aspirations, but for the most part those #16 players were 21 and 22 year olds who had been playing together for 4 years and coming in hot after winning their (small) conference tournament.

Outside of a rally or something else weird, Mario should never lose to more than 3-4 video game characters in a given year... but a killer injury, bad calls by the referees, or anything else can happen on the basketball court.

The Streaks have been snapped! Which was more impressive?

It's all over!

#1 seed (and widely considered the best team in the country) Virginia has been defeated by little-known UMBC, ending the most epic streak in sports. #16s had been defeated 135 times in a row until this evening.

But the real question is, how does this compare to the GameFAQs version of The Streak- the unbeatable Noble Nine going an amazing 124-0 since the birth of Character Battles back in 2002. Let's find out!

Princeton had the opportunity to win the game with the last shot, but Alonzo Mourning blocked the last two attempts to secure the victory. In the Southeast Regional, Oklahoma fought back from a 17-point first-half deficit to take the lead over East Tennessee State with 1:21 remaining. ETSU also had a chance at a last-second win, but Alvin West's shot from halfcourt was deflected and Oklahoma defeated ETSU 7271.
* In 1996, Western Carolina missed a three-pointer to win and a two-pointer to tie in the final seconds, losing 7371 to Purdue.

For comparisons sake, #15 seeds defeated #2s a full EIGHT times over this same stretch, including 4 times just in the last few years.

I think its more just that blockbusters have kinda faded out of the picture more than anything.

Also, what movies do people fanboy over other than Return of the King from the decade prior? I guess theres the Departed and Gladiator but Im not sure if those count as fanboying over

I'd say this board fanboyed over (or would have if it was around at the time)...

Return of the King
The Departed
No Country For Old Men
American Beauty
Gladiator
Titanic (well okay, B8 would have called it overrated, but a female version of B8 would have been crazy about it)

And no way, blockbusters in the past decade are bigger than ever! The problem is, these days casual moviegoers only head to the theater 2-3 times a year to see the biggest of the popcorn flicks (which the Academy only rewards for Special Effects/Sound Editing) while they watch TV shows to get their fill of smaller-stakes drama.

In the 90s/early 00s stuff like Breaking Bad and Stranger Things and True Detective would have been seen by about as many people as they were these days... but they would have been movies, and they would have been Oscar nominated, and people would have felt a bigger connection to the awards season as a result.

Poor showing for me, it's a shame- I was really gunning for the third win as I saw more nominated films before the show than any other year. Thoughts:

- I liked Shape of Water, it's a worthy winner, but I'd have preferred a Director/Pic split to better reflect what a competitive year this was. a Get Out win would have been cool but I was rooting for Three Billboards, since Jordan had already won (and gotten a huge ovation) for Script

- strong speeches from McDormand and Oldman, helped that they were near-locks with 3 months to prepare them of course. Rockwell's sick Grandma story was also pretty great

- Dunkirk's a great choice for Editing but would have been nice to see Baby Driver not shut out

- Kobe Bryant, Oscar winner is hilarious

- tried for an upset with Wonder in Makeup, still say it was worth a shot!

- I liked a few of the Best Songs in the theater but none of them came off too great on air... maybe they were having sound problems on set?

- I wanted to go back and swap out Faces Places for Icarus after I saw the latter is available on Netflix, but was too lazy to update my ballot. whoops!

- figured DeKalb Elementary was the Shoe In of the Week, but maybe Parkland happened too late to be reflected on most ballots?

- the Jet Ski was the gift that kept on giving, the references throughout the night were funny and having the winner ride off into the sunset with Helen Mirren and his Oscar in hand was the perfect payoff

- visiting the theater across the street took a little too much time to set up but it was cute, I preferred it to having the strangers walk in from the street like last year. and getting a random fan to introduce the next presenters was neat

- speaking of which, those presenters (Tiffany Haddish and Maya Rudolph) were the non-Jet Ski highlight of the night

- last year's Best Pic mixup was obviously going to be a big time recurring joke, but I thought they did a decent job of giving gentle ribbings without beating a dead horse TOO hard. my favorite bit was the extreme close up "and we'll be handing out THIS EXACT ENVELOPE next!"

- I like the little montages when they have a point (here are some of the historic performances that won Best Supporting Actor in the past, etc) but the montage of "and here's every popular movie of the last 50 years, less than half of which we nominated for anything!" is pretty dumb, and always has been (they've done it about 12 years in a row now I think). the montage of war movies also felt a little out of place for this occasion

- guys, did you hear Rosanne is coming back? wow, Rosanne! "surely they didn't manage to bring back the original cast though?" that's where you're wrong, kiddo! now be sure to stay tuned so we can tell you about the return of Rosanne every five minutes for the next four hours

Helm's Deep was fun, but I dunno, I might have preferred the Mines of Moria fight due to the tension and emergence of the Balrog. From the moment the party hears a distant drumbeat in the mines to the moment they collapse grieving Gandalf... maybe the best sequence of the trilogy imo.

HECK yeah.

I got these messages pretty often for about a month, on all kinds of websites, and on multiple computers. I figured it was my ISP's fault and I think I was RIGHT because once I switched to Google's DNS service instead of Time Warner's I've never seen them again. Following the instructions here is what did the trick for me:
