WW did $413 mil domestic this Summer, to Spiderman's $334.

...but only $822 mil worldwide, to Spidey's $880. International audiences aren't warming to the new DC Universe as quickly as we did in the US, but I do expect their numbers to keep improving as the franchise continues.

Uh oh, Justice League will have its work cut out for it! The numbers aren't official yet but Thor looks to have delivered a very impressive $120+ million in its opening weekend. That's an improvement over Spidey's $117 this Summer and miles above Dr. Strange ($85) and the previous Thor titles ($86, $66).

This probably means JL is going to have to significantly outperform Batman/Superman and Suicide Squad to get the win, which I'm not sure it'll be able to pull off.

The holiday movie season kicks off today, but which title will emerge the winner in November's Superhero Showdown?

DC stunned the world by defeating both of Marvel's releases over the Summer; let's see whether they'll be able to keep their recent hot streak going.

For reference, here's how things have turned out for the studios over the last couple years (all numbers are the domestic gross).

DC
Wonder Woman - $413 million
Suicide Squad - $325 million
Batman v Superman - $330 million

Marvel
Spiderman: Homecoming - $334 million
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 - $390 million
Doctor Strange - $233 million

With Thor and the Hulk making this a buddy cop adventure though, will Ragnarok perform more like Marvel's previous teamups? If so, we could be looking at a result more along the lines of

Captain America: Civil War - $408 million
Avengers: Age of Ultron - $459 million
The Avengers - $623 million

Should be closely contested, but my money's on Thor.

The results are in, and they're fannnnnntastic!

Viewership went from about 15 million in the early games to 19+ for the G5 thriller, 22 for G6, and a stunning 28 million for the finale. That makes it the second most-watched baseball game since the Red Sox championship game way back in 2004 (only last year's Cubs/Indians G7 tops it).

The overall average for the Series was boosted up to 19 million, making it the most popular championship series since the Yanks/Phils in 2009 (aside from, again, Cubs/Indians). Going back to the chart, this means it also tops every NBA Finals except for the last three and almost all Final Fours and BCS seasons as well.

The other thing I'll say for the World Series which I didn't think about before tonight is, it's up against a ratings juggernaut almost every day of the week. Anytime one of the games falls on a Saturday, Sunday, Monday, or Thursday it's competing against (theoretically at least) the best marquee matchups the NFL and college football have to offer, and probably losing half their audience to it on some nights. On the other hand the NCAA and NFL do a good job of not overlapping, and the two other championships happen outside of football's dominating months so they have pretty much no competition at all.

Now then, UPDATE- the Astros/Dodgers did about 15 million for the first games of this current Series, which is respectable though not amazing. I'm expecting the numbers to go WAY up after tonight's thriller however, and stay up for the remainder of the series- what a game!

I blame the Rays for the poor ratings in 2008, since the Phillies have a very large TV market (4th largest TV market in the US).

I believe you, my good man. The Phils went from 13 million viewers to 19 million+ when they swapped out the Rays for the Yankees the following year. Also helped that the 2009 Series was more competitive (Yanks took it in 6 games).

TAKEAWAYS:

* College football's going to own this chart for the next decade, and it probably won't be close. Their championship game has always done well, they were mainly being held back by the bottom 1/2 least compelling of the 5 BCS games in the past. Now that it's only 3 games and all of them matter for determining the champ, they're the closest to a Sure Thing you're going to see in sports. Well as long as ESPN doesn't foolishly run both of the Semis on New Year's Eve again... (that was the big drop in 2015)

I still say they need to expand the CFP to 8 teams, but 4 is at least a heck of an improvement over the 2 of the past so they're going to be fine.

* College basketball has two problems. Everyone's crazy about the tourney, but they love it for the buzzbeaters and flipping around between 4 games and the early round upsets (especially when a hated powerhouse is flaming out); by the time we reach the Final Four everyone's bracket is busted and the casual fans have tuned out. The only exception is when there's still a super compelling storyline alive, like Kentucky's undefeated season in 2015.

And the other problem is, the sport is shooting itself in the foot with its new contract that trades the Final Four between CBS and TBS every year. Look how much being on cable hurt 2016 versus 2015 and 2017- it's about as extreme as it gets!

* Baseball's the biggest surprise me to. MLB still does very well in terms of attendance, but the common conception is that these days people are fans of their TEAMS but don't care about the sport overall, so they won't watch the all star game or the playoffs once their favorite is eliminated. Apparently that's a lie, because these World Series numbers are very healthy, and about as consistent as you could get (aside from the high water mark streak-breaker years).

* The NBA is shockingly overrated. Sure it's been topping the World Series for the last 7 years (Cubs win aside), but not by very much, especially not when you consider how pretty much every year the Finals has featured the biggest star in sports, on a team with two other huge stars, going up against what would have been considered an all star team in the pre-Super Team era. Whereas half the time the World Series is won by small market teams filled with third and fourth year players and a few veterans, very few of whom the average fan on the street would be able to name off the top of their head.

I think it's all about that "key demo" of 18 to 45 year olds that advertisers love. The NBA dominates social media and youtube and blogs and podcasts, and young people will turn up to watch the Finals as long as its competitive, but people over 45 haven't cared about the NBA since Jordan's final shot in '98 so there's a pretty firm ceiling on how well any Finals can do.

While on the other hand all those 45 plusers love tuning in to the World Series regardless of who's playing- it's a tradition! Which gives baseball a pretty firm floor it can rely on even when there's no streak being broken to bring in the younger viewers and casual fans. It's an enviable position to be in... for RIGHT NOW... could be a different story going forward though, as those viewers are going to start dying off soon.

I liked the Melania sketch at the end but otherwise this was a pretty weak showing, a few okay ideas but they never nailed the execution. Must have been worn out from doing three weeks in a row, writing was much sharper in the first two episodes.
