Torches basically last forever if you only use them as torches, same with hammers for mining/puzzles and axes for tree cutting. It also applies to shield surfing - rockier surfaces degrade your shield super fast, grass very slowly, and IIRC sand and snow don't degrade it at all. The chances of this critical cooking go up during a blood moon. Useful for restocking on certain weapons once you know where they tend to spawn.
