Mexican President Enrique Pea Nieto has called off an official trip to Washington to meet with President Donald Trump after a tense phone call brought the two leaders to a policy-driven standstill.

Pea Nieto was tentatively planning the trip for March, a White House official said, but the official confirmed to CNN that the trip was put on hold following the phone call, which took place on February 20.

According to The Washington Post, which first reported the cancellation, officials from both countries told the paper that Pea Nieto "called off the plan after Trump would not agree to publicly affirm Mexico's position that it would not fund construction of a border wall."

A White House official told CNN that any meeting would be awkward and counterproductive given Trump's vow that Mexico would pay for the wall.

The official said the call was "less hostile" than the one that occurred between the two leaders a year ago, but "no more productive" than that call either.
At least one Mexican official, who spoke to the Post on the condition of anonymity, said Trump "lost his temper." US officials described the President as being "frustrated and exasperated, saying Trump believed it was unreasonable for Pea Nieto to expect him to back off his crowd-pleasing campaign promise of forcing Mexico to pay for the wall."

According to the Post's report, the two leaders "devoted a considerable portion" of this year's call to discussing the wall.

According to the paper, officials from both countries confirmed that Pea Nieto's "desire to avoid public embarrassment and Trump's unwillingness to provide that assurance that proved to be the dealbreaker."

At the risk of sounding angstheist, I really don't get how organized religion is so prevalent still in this day and age. An entire belief system built on the idea of faith in something you can't sense in any way? Like sure, privately it's fine,

The mother of a student who survived the deadly Florida high school shooting said her family has received death threats in the wake of the tragedy.

Student David Hogg and other survivors of the Florida shooting have made frequent media appearances in recent days to call for action on gun violence. They have since become the subject of conspiracy theories falsely claiming they are actors who were coached ahead of their television appearances.

Hogg's mother, Rebecca Boldrick, told The Washington Post her family has received death threats online since the conspiracy theories surfaced.

Im under so much stress, she told the Post.

Im angry and exhausted," she continued. "Angry, exhausted and extremely proud.

Hogg has spoken out in recent days against the conspiracy theories against him, saying he is not a "crisis actor" but is someone who had to live through this tragedy.

Its annoying. I hate it. But its part of American democracy, Hogg said in a phone interview with the Post. Am I an actor? No. Am I a witness? Yes.

Earlier this week, a Florida state lawmaker's aide was fired hours after claiming two survivors of the Florida shooting including Hogg who had appeared on television were actors.

Benjamin Kelly, an aide to state Rep. Shawn Harrison (R), emailed a Tampa Bay Times reporter after Hogg and Emma Gonzlez called for legislation to stop gun violence in an appearance on CNN.

According to Tampa Bay Times reporter Alex Leary, the staffer said, "Both kids in the picture are not students here but actors that travel to various crisis when they happen."

Florida House Speaker Richard Corcoran (R) later tweeted that he fired Kelly.

Survivors of the shooting have spoken out in multiple interviews against gun violence. Some appeared Wednesday night during a CNN town hall, in which residents of Parkland, Fla., were given the chance to question Florida lawmakers and a National Rifle Association spokeswoman.

Students in schools across the country this week have also staged walkouts and marches to demand action on gun control.

We're talking about teachers that openly WANT to do this, folks. Not a mandatory requirement here.
