I am simply saying that factors like poverty and a lack of investment etc etc as causative things shouldn't be ignored in favour of blaming some form of cultural external stimulus over them. This is not an original hypothesis, it is something that studies have shown the world over. I don't think this is controversial. It's also unfair to suddenly say that we forget what Keith said because he initially disregarded a study as to the effects of poverty and instead pondered whether hip hop was actually to blame.

If Keith said video games or movies or something were responsible in a vacuum for societal violence I would consider it bad also. Coming from somebody who bookends the point with very obvious dogwhistle makes it pretty objectionable to me.

Keith also explicitly acknowledged that these guys were often rapping about getting out of the hood, their own experiences in it etc. People have derived the wrong message from stuff like Scarface. It happens. It's irresponsible to dismiss a study, like Keith did, as being biased and liberal for linking poverty and violence and then ponder whether hip hop is the actual root cause. That is a massive dogwhistle. I do not buy for a second that Keith was citing studies in that non sequitur.

This stuff is true the world over too btw. People are currently trying to blame UK and Irish drill for violence here. Terrible social housing planning in decades gone by condemned entire generations to poverty and a cycle of violence. People have always tried to look for easy options and external stimulants as a means to justify dehumanising people. Rejecting that is not objectionable regardless of where you're from.

The primary consumer of rap in 2020 is probably suburban white kids if anything. Nobody is saying these kids are flipping bricks because they're bumping Migos while playing fortnite.

I mean, I think it's pretty naive to blanket reject the possibility of any sort of emancipatory movement escalating to violence. It's pretty much been a staple of them since the dawn of time. I don't think acknowledging that makes anybody a deranged leftist or whatever.

He said that the glorification led to violence in the community not that it was the main reason and it does. I grew up in the hood in NYC. I know first hand how much influence rap had on our behavior and it's definitely a big problem that caused violence. We idolized tons of rappers.

I don't think Keith is speaking of it in good faith, especially wedged in after a comment about how 'black people kill each other more than anybody else does' and saying he has the stats of anybody wants them. It was a weird non-sequitur and read like a generic right wing cultural panic talking point rather than one of genuine concern, especially given the person it came from.

People can definitely derive the wrong and indeed negative messages from media, whether it be music or TV or film or video games or whatever. I am very much in favour of looking at the root cause of bad behaviour than laying the blame at the door of music or whatever else is the easiest scapegoat available. Same goes for people blaming the opioid crisis on rappers openly referencing drug use. Or people calling Elvis or whoever satanic back on the day.

It's also kinda funny to me that he is a literal felon and is always talking shit about how other users are pussies, aren't tough like him etc but then shit pops off this week and he's handwringing about criminal activity and violence

Yesterday he called an article posted by a user 'biased and liberal' for linking poverty to violence and then mused as to whether hip hop was the real reason for violence in such communities

To be fair, I literally searched 'coronavirus' and went back to the topic around the time China started putting lockdowns in place. Its not like I went through every post ever made for months lol.

But you're not wrong either, guess I just got annoyed at being called out on something I didn't think was entirely fair as I had taken the poster in question at their word when they spoke about lockdowns already starting nearby. It was totally hypocritical, I will hold my hands up there.

Anyway, my friend, I have already said that unemployment benefits should've been streamlined as far as possible with external assistance as needed. I have plenty of sympathy for people left short as a result of that. However, regardless of how things were on the ground, bad faith actors on this board and elsewhere were happy to weaponise those as a means to 'get the economy back on track'. Those same people have an ideological opposition to unemployment benefits. Those are the people I am trying to call out. I'm sorry if my description of those protests was incorrect. But I'm not your enemy here.
