CHAPTER 1: THE MEAGER (aka: l i t t l e m o n e y)

I really don't understand the little money slowness thing. Why are those words so slow? Anyway we are now in this military academy with a bunch of cadets talking about the Death Corps and whatnot. Some high ranking people are coming to visit. Oh look it's young Bartz and young Delita! They are like best buds.

We are training to be part of the Hokuten, which is like some group of knight. We are supposed to guard a castle, but then some knight tells us that a "gang of tortured theives" is attacking the town and we need to take care of them. At this point I get to take my first look at my party! Let's see who I have here.

Not a bad bunch of names, I was expecting to get a bunch of weird ones. I choose Evelyn, Heinlein, June, and Scarlet as my companions on this first fight.

The thieves want to kill every last one of us, but it doesn't really go that way. Delita told me not to rush them, which I don't really understand, but run out and kill them all with relative ease after telling Delita to **** off("Don't patronize me!").

The thief repeatedly reminds the player that my group is bunch of kids and snot-nosed nobles. I'm guessing that the plot will feature conflict around noblility and inequality and such.

Battle is complete and I get 500 Bonus Gil. Is that dependent on anything? Or is it always the same?

Now that the battle is finished I get another flashback I think talking about Balbanes Beoulve's death. That's Bartz's dad. Dycedarg and Zalbag are his brothers, or half-brothers, it seems. Is Alma also Bartz's half-sister? It seems that way.

They are upset that Bartz isn't there, but then he runs in. I guess this is a while ago because he's about to start the Academy. Maybe the academy is like a year, so perhaps this is from another year prior. His father wants him to follow the Beoulve way, which is to serve the crown as a warrior. Balbanes keeps making reference to Delita serving Bartz, which leads me to believe that Delita's family are like servants to the Beoulve family. Pretty sure that causes trouble later.

It also looks like Bartz is the favored son. I wonder if that starts conflict later also.

Nobody in this game has a nose. Back in those days, that was probably for the better.

After several years of missing this fantastic game, I finally pick it up again and start playing! Previously I got about 3/4 through the game, but since it was my brother's copy and he moved away I never finished it.

Now I'm starting over and experiencing it almost as if for the first time. I have a very limited memory of the game's plot details, so I would appreciate no discussion of plot points until after I reach them in the game. I will be commenting both on plot aspects and the gameplay portions, but I tend to run my playthroughs kind of light, so don't expect too many comments from me.

I won't be doing any special sort of run this time, but I will probably not use the named characters that often, especially the game-breaking ones(Orlandu). This is the original PS version being played on my PS2 Slim.

Anyway, let's get going! My first update will be coming up shortly. Expect SPOILERS in my posts, please be forewarned.

I'm sure you're well aware of the infamous sticking point in chapter 3, so as long as you're careful with your saves in that chapter (meaning keep a save outside of Riovanes, not in it), you should be fine

I recall some battle early on in the game(Chapter 1) being incredibly frustrating, and hearing a lot of griping about it on the board. Was it Dorter Trade City or the thieves fort? I don't recall. Yeah, I remember always having more than one save for cases like the one you mention.

Q: Are there plans to release a new Mana game?
A: Wada said that Square Enix will be doing ports of Mana and Saga titles, but there are no plans at present to release a completely new entries/series.

It's hard for me to resist the urge to go nuts on leveling as soon as I get to cavern of the stolen fayth(the earliest place you can exploit the trick). Yeah you can't get outrageously overpowered, but you can get almost all over the sphere grid using Lv 2 locks and friends spheres.

It's amusing to get so strong that early in the game, and not overly time consuming.

Also, FFVIII would have a good chance at beating FFVI in a contest match, so it'd be close to majority opinion...!

I think we are talking about the opinions of people who have played both games. Contest strength isn't entirely relevant as FFVIII has probably had many more players than FFVI

Did you get the Gold Rock, by any chance? The method of getting that is kind of random, so you probably didn't. It's in the Denadoro Mountains. You need to have Frog in the front of the party and have him catch a rock thrown by an enemy.

what does that do?

I dont think that does much that wont be undone by a different sidequest later on.

Anyway, from here on out the game is open-ended. As you probably know, you can beat the game anytime, and play with any party, but there is more stuff to do to get the best ending.

You know about the multiple endings, right?

My preferred party is frog/lucca/crono. One of the earliest triple techs in the game and incredibly useful imo.

Also 12,000 BC is the peak of the game, so enjoy it. I always keep a save at the beginning of that part so I can play it whenever I wish.

Don't feel like you have to give all your power-ups to Crono. You won't always be forced to have him in your party as the game opens up later.
