I've been thinking about this for a while. Setting aside the console makers (So Ninty, Sony and Microsoft), does anybody else come close to being as important to gaming as Epic has been in the last 20 years? More games use the Unreal Engine than pretty much anything else by a fairly wide margin. Id kinda, sorta was in a similar position circa the Quake 2-3 eras, but Epic started running circles around them 'round the time of Doom 3 and hasn't stopped being way more relevant ever since.

The current plan is to start upgrading the M4 ruleset and mercs builds a bit so as to run a short test game with them. I want the ruleset to be clearer, more comprehensive, and once I'm sure it makes some amount of sense, introduce some tweaks to it to handle some things people disliked about M4 (like the power of paydowns). Likewise, I want to fix undertuned mercs, upgrade the ones that were boring or generic, and simplify the ones that were unnecessarily complex or poorly written.

Yeah, book 4 is Tehanu and is super duper heavy handed. There is no antagonist in that book that isn't a raging woman-hater and it's pretty blatant that it's trying to push A Message instead of a story.

thief 4 was made by a different development team inside the studio and most of the people responsible for that game left before the game was complete.

No surprises there. That game sticks out like a sore thumb in their resum. I legit don't know anyone who had anything nice to say about it beyond 'it's OK, I guess'.

SC3 and 4 were the crap games tho

At least in terms of gameplay, they introduced beloved waifus and stuff but they didn't have a lot of staying power. SC5 was well liked as a game, but was so rushed all its content was in its systems and it had none of the story mode and casual appeal stuff of past games, to its detriment.

nope. Eidos was a wholly owned publisher until they got into financial trouble and were bought by another company before being sold off to Square shortly after. Eidos Montreal was formed in between those two transactions as gaming companies started looking to Canada for cheaper labour and generous tax breaks.

Aight, good to know. Looking at their titles, Thi4f was an unforced clunker but the rest are pretty good and they did the previous TRs. So should be good, I think.

Ubisoft/Eidos Montreal is a good studio so I have decent hopes for it. I think the only clunker they've produced was Far Cry 2 (and Human Defiance but they got mega rushed for that one, not their fault).

Books 1-3 are good. Book 4 is a really hamfisted feminist tract that is pretty unreadable. I feel like Book 2 in particular is pretty slow, but the moments where the main characters spend time together are real good, and book 3 is the best of the lot.

(To clarify about book 4, the problem isn't that it's feminist. The problem is it's poorly written to reinforce the political message, and breaks tone and style completely from books 1-3. Just making that clear because I don't want this to be misunderstood.)

Based on special elections, pretty low. We have yet to see a 12 point swing based on PVI. Right now it looks we're at around a 7 point decline for Republicans.

Isn't it around 17, not 7, on average?

I don't think it's just a Trump backlash. You know what percentage of Clinton voters turned out to vote? 80%. The average turnout on a midterm is like, half that. Trump by himself isn't enough to double the amount of motivated voters. I think it's a sea change. Things have changed. Like a certain celebrity said, time's up.

Fake Edit: For context, imagine the idea of LAW backlash causing us to get 80% of the 2006 turnout in a gamefaqs contest when Link is up to lose. If that doesn't seem plausible, then you understand why I think this is part of a larger shift in democrat outlook.

Yup, Trump is still popular in that district (51-47) so it made sense for Trump to stump.

Problem is it also fires up Democrats to vote so it's a double-edged sword.

This. Remember that it doesn't matter what Trump does for their base. It doesn't boost their turnouts. But it sure motivates democrats to get out there and start voting.

Flynn. He's pretty tanky and I feel like he could successfully disengage from Geese and punish. '4 customs oriented towards melee' says he has healing too, to me, so unless Geese can kill a guy who tanks multiple lightning blasts from a god quickly, I buy him.

This is kind of a weird nomination because Raiden doesn't have a 'true' finisher, per se - you can Blade Mode at any time, more or less, so long as you have bar. BUT, and this is a big but, it's how every single boss is either phase-changed or finished, including the final boss. And it's highly cinematic and flashy. So if this doesn't count, what does?

I feel pretty confident in saying this is gonna be the most ridiculous attack on the list. Not because it's the most elaborate, or the most destructive, but because it's totally ludicrous. How do you defeat an infinitely regenerating god-machine with bullshit powers it makes up as the plot demands? You combine your soul with your significant other to summon the spirit of the Burger King to punch a heart-shaped hole through him, that's how. People hate this or love this with no middle ground, and for this reason it deserves to be here.

Nominate: Getter Robo Armageddon - Stoner Sunshine


Getter Robo Armageddon is probably the most beloved entry in the legendary Getter Robo franchise, one of the 'Big Three' of mecha anime alongside Gundam and Mazinger, and if you only catch a bit of it, it's kinda hard to see why, because it seems absurdly dark and needlessly edgy.

...And then you hit something like this and you realize it deserves every bit of praise it gets. The music, the very unique art style, and the amazing vocal deliveries, it all comes together to create one of the most famous giant robot finishers of all time. STONAAAAAAAAAAAAA! SUUUUUUUUUN! SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE!
