Scientists working in the Amazon rainforest have discovered a new species of snake, rumored to be the biggest in the world.

A team from the University of Queensland traveled to the Ecuadorian Amazon to search for the previously undocumented northern green anaconda (Eunectes akayima), following an invitation from the Waorani people to observe anacondas rumoured to be the largest in existence, according to the scientists.

The team joined the hunters on a 10-day expedition to the Bameno region of Baihuaeri Waorani Territory, before paddling down the river system to find several anacondas lurking in the shallows, lying in wait for prey, Professor Bryan Fry, a biologist from the University of Queensland, who led the team, said in a statement.
Anacondas are giant, non-venomous constricting snakes found in or near water in warm parts of South America.

The size of these magnificent creatures was incredible one female anaconda we encountered measured an astounding 6.3 metres (20.7 feet) long, Fry said of the teams discovery, which was made while filming for National Geographics upcoming series Pole to Pole with Will Smith.

The team also said they had heard anecdotal evidence that snakes of 7.5 meters (24.6 feet) and 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds) had been sighted in the area.

Green anacondas are the worlds heaviest snakes, according to the UKs Natural History Museum, which noted that the heaviest individual ever recorded weighed 227 kilograms (500 pounds). It measured 8.43 meters long (27.7 feet) and 1.11 meters (3.6 feet) wide.

While another species, the reticulated python, tends to be longer often reaching more than 6.25 meters (20.5 feet) in length it is lighter.

But.....why?

The skeleton panda sea squirt is a species thats been newly-identified in Japan. The unusual creatures are tiny, measuring about 2 centimeters, or 3/4 of an inch long. Scuba divers around the Japanese coast began posting pictures of the sea squirts online around 2017. The photos caught the attention of researchers from the University of Hokkaido, who studied and have just released a paper on them. Inside Edition Digital has more.

Media news website ICv2 reported on Thursday that Kodansha will publish Ikki Kajiwara (pen name Asao Takamori) and Tetsuya Chiba's Ashita no Joe (Tomorrow's Joe) boxing manga in English with the name Ashita no Joe: Fighting for Tomorrow. The company will release the manga physically in eight oversized hardcover volumes as well as digitally, starting in December. The release marks the manga's first official English translation.

The manga ran in Kodansha's Weekly Shnen Magazine from 1968 to 1973, and it had 20 compiled book volumes. The series has remained a mainstay in Japanese popular culture for decades. The manga has inspired two television anime in 1970 and 1980, as well as two anime films in 1980 and 1981. The manga inspired a live-action film that opened in Japan in 2011 starring Tomohisa Yamashita. A stage play adaptation ran in Tokyo in 2015.

Ashita no Joe revolves around an orphan named Joe Yabuki who rises from the Tokyo slums under the tutelage of a former boxer. Takamori and Chiba's original manga is among the most critically acclaimed stories in Japanese popular culture, and Osamu Dezaki's television series added to the story's iconic status. The manga would later influence two generations of sports and shonen manga, including Hajime no Ippo (Fighting Spirit). A crucial twist in the Ashita no Joe television anime's plot made headlines in Japan as people marked the occasion with public ceremonies.

Most recently, the manga's story was re-imagined in a new sci-fi setting with new characters in 2018's Megalobox anime, which credits the original manga as its origin. The sequel series for Megalobox, Megalobox 2: Nomad, premiered in April 2021.
