This one aspect I'm eager for ai to take over. Being able to play, read, and watch anything and understand what's going on would be amazing.

I have been using Google Lens for this for a while and it's a bit hit or miss. ChatGPT does some basic translation that's not terrible (about as good as deepl). Google Lens is a bit more advanced because of the image recognition and using google translate.

This is the first consumer available AI Code generation tool. This was one of the main projected "features" of GPT-4 and it was a massive success so much so that the GPT-3 code generation functionality is great as well.

There are PC games I bought digitally 13 years ago that I can still download to this day. Even games that have been delisted are still available for download even if you can't buy them anymore. Can the same be said for digital Wii, PS3, or 360 games that were bought back then?

...actually that is a legitimate question, I haven't tried.

I actually don't know about the Nintendo systems but the PS3 is still getting firmware updates as of this year which is pretty impressive for an almost 20 year old console.

Companies RELY on VPNs for telework. There are open standards such as IPSec that facilitate the creation of VPNs. Basically anyone can create a "VPN", it is well established technology that only requires someone to create a secure tunnel between two points and to forward network requests through that point.
Nobody is going to take this from you. A ban on VPNs is essentially a ban on encryption.
A ban on encryption is literally the end of the modern era. Everything we do relies on encryption to work.
The worst thing that could even happen is that very large VPN providers which move data through countries like China and Russia could be banned, and I'm not even sure that this act would even be able to do that.
Also it doesn't put any penalty on the end user. The current discourse in Washington is for consumer protection, especially the protection of minors from companies who are data harvesting for algorithms which are being designed to manipulate their target audiences.

I'm going to miss this short period of time in which I get to watch not one, but two hours of space science fiction drama on a Thursday morning.
It fills me with happiness.

Probably because Defender is malware. On Windows 11 it is even worse. Defender will constantly try and load applications into memory to try and read what's inside of them.

Just pick up a distribution that's easy to use like Manjaro. I have been using Linux since 2006 (when I was 16 years old). Me being a software engineer doesn't even weigh into it - I didn't even program when I first started using Linux. FWIW I do software development in both Linux and Windows. I just don't see any value in Windows as an operating system.

Windows 7 came out like 15 years ago and Windows 8 was almost immediately replaced for free by Windows 10.

Windows 7 could be upgraded to Windows 10 (and now 11) for free as well.
I believe even Vista keys will work on 10/11.

Not surprising as Windows 7 is EoL and Microsoft is probably trying to push it out of its supported list with the next Visual Studio version. Just use Linux at this point.

Wow this really is a season of Romantic Comedies. I saw My Clueless First friend but I was apprehensive at first because it's a shounen about elementary schoolers, but it totally works and has wide market appeal. Only thing I generally don't like about anime is that they don't spend enough time creating stories about adults, but I guess we see that in Yamada Level 999 where the characters seem to be in their early 20s.

I don't know if you all have stepped into a factory recently, but, factory work is very much not fully automated. It costs millions to create that machine for a line that's going to be around maybe 4 years at most. It's also not a "fire and forget" machine that marketers claim it to be. It still takes even more specialized automation teams to maintain those machines.

I work in a field adjacent and those factory automation HMIs and PLCs. That software neither writes itself, nor does the hardware make itself. Also I've recently (in the past month) dealt directly to the people setting up these facilities and I absolutely feel for the work that they have to do.

+1. Also I hate SO, and sometimes it answers questions I would go to SO for, but other than that, no. It doesn't do all that much. I am way more likely to consult API docs or read source code than to actually go to SO anyways.

2023 has been an absolute fantastic year with all of the LLMs we are getting and it's only going to get better the more widespread this becomes.

There's valid questions to be asked, but what is being asked isn't one of them. ChatGPT and it's ilk have nothing to do with the Terminator-esque AI that people worry about and have no real pathway for going that direction. They're just a fancier data processing algorithms. The biggest issue that they currently offer is another avenue for the generation and spread of misinformation (and also can be seen in the "AI" image generation apps with examples such as the puffy jacket pope).

This. There is also huge benefits to be gained from AI-aided design, because the AI can collect and organize data with context that the original source material may not have. It's a tool to be used just like any other program.
