I didn't really enjoy Lady Bird. It's not a bad film, but it was dull.
Shape of Water is actually one I need to see. Del Toro is hit or miss but I loved Crimson Peak.
Haven't seen Thor Ragnarok, I usually skip most of the capeshit movies unless it's a major event or a hero I really want to follow. Guardians 2, Wonder Woman, Logan, and Justice League all came out this year and I really didn't care to see another Thor romp.

John Wick 2 was awesome but I thought John Wick 1 was better and while it's definitely in the top 20 it didn't crack my top 10.

I thought Star Wars The Last Jedi was garbage, if I was making a worst movies of 2017 list that'd be a contender for number 1. More realistically probably number 7 or 8 if I didn't want to just be shocking because i know there's some technical failures in there and at least Last Jedi had the fundamentals.

It was a lot of fun. Not quite as good as the original Kingsman but 2017 was a bit of a dud year for film anyway. Some real bangers, but a LOT of shlock. Logan almost made the list but if I'm going for Capeshit I preferred Kingsman and Get Out couldn't be edged from the number 10 spot.

https://www.buzzfeed.com/ishmaeldaro/cobourg-tim-hortons-benefit-cut?utm_term=.rq5pQeKq2#.hyWPABExw

Employees at a Canada-based Tim Hortons location felt blindsided after being told their benefits were getting cut by at least half, with the owners blaming a minimum wage increase for the sudden changes.
In a letter from the owners of the franchise located in Cobourg, Ontario, workers found out last month they were losing paid breaks, health benefits, and other previous guarantees starting on Jan. 1.

The letter blamed the changes on the increase in Ontario's minimum hourly wage from $11.60 to $14 on Jan. 2, and which is set to rise by another dollar in 2019. The owners also blamed "the lack of assistance and financial help from our Head Office and from the Government."

According to the letter, employees with five years or more of service will now be responsible for 50% of their previously guaranteed health and dental benefits. Employees with under five years must pay 75% out of pocket.
The married owners are Ron Joyce Jr. and Jeri Horton-Joyce, son and daughter of Tim Hortons company co-founders Ron Joyce and Tim Horton.

In a statement, the Tim Hortons corporate office said that "all employment matters, including all policies for benefits and wages," are set by individual franchise owners.

BuzzFeed Canada reached out to the owners for comment.

The employees felt "shock and panic" after receiving the notice, according to James Pickersgill, who knows three people who are affected.
"Their respect for the owners where they worked bottomed out," he told BuzzFeed Canada, adding that employees felt pressure to sign the document without seeking any outside advice or input.

According to Pickersgill, the situation was compounded by the fact that the owners sent the letter while they were at their second home in Florida.

"I haven't heard anybody who works there express any sympathy with the owners," he said.

Pickersgill, who does not work at Tim Hortons, shared a photo of the letter on his Facebook account because the affected workers feared retribution if they did it themselves, he said.

It quickly racked up hundreds of shares, and many have reacted with anger at the owners' decision to shift the cost of the wage hike to their employees.

Some people are already calling for a boycott of the whole international food chain.
"I may be time to boycott @TimHortons as they seem to want to harm innocent low wage employees."
Others are blaming the company for not taking more responsibility for the actions of individual franchises.
According to CBC News, some employees' compensation will actually be lower now than before the rise in the minimum wage.

One angry employee told the public broadcaster that they would lose $51 per paycheque as a result of the changes, once unpaid breaks and the cost of previously covered benefits are factored in.

At the end of the day a company has to turn profits and employees are meant to bring in profit. But is it right for Tim Hortons to cut benefits in this reactionary fashion?
Are you going to boycott Tim Hortons?

Something you'll learn about women as you get older is that they hate being bored more than anything else on the planet, and to that aim they'll steer headfirst into conflict or a potentially dangerous situation if it means they won't be bored.

It's why on a psychological level you see women with men who from your perspective you think is abusing or mistreating them. Because in their mind the only abuse is not having anything to do, and that "abusive guy" is absolutely keeping them busy.

https://gizmodo.com/germanys-new-social-media-hate-speech-law-is-now-being-1821697245

2017 was the year public sentiment began to turn against massive tech conglomerates like Facebook and Google. But nowhere in the West has the backlash been bigger than Germany, which last year passed a sweeping anti-hate speech law requiring websites to promptly investigate reports of posts illegal under German law and delete them. On January 1st, 2018, the grace period before that law would begin being enforced by authorities expired.

Per broadcaster Deutsche Welle, companies affected by the Network Enforcement Act (NetzDG) include Facebook, Twitter, Google, YouTube, Snapchat, and Instagram, though professional networks like LinkedIn and Xing are expressly excluded, as are messaging services like WhatsApp. The BBC noted additional sites like Vimeo and Flickr could potentially be targeted by authorities under the law.

Germany has strict laws prohibiting content like neo-Nazi propaganda, swastikas, and Holocaust denial, and NetzDG will require the sites in question to investigate user reports of such postings, delete most within 24 hours, and act on more complicated cases within a week. The German parliament originally passed the law in late June 2017 and it went into force in October, but legislators gave sites three months to put together internal systems to remove the banned contentFacebooks compliance efforts entailed the hiring of several hundred staff, according to the BBC.

Per Deutsche Welle, users can report directly to German federal authorities, though the threat of non-compliance fines of up to $57 million (50 million euros) has apparently spurred companies into action:

Google has also created an online form to report content, while Twitter has added an option to its existing report function that specifies comes under the NetzDG. Facebook has set up a more complex system, independent of its reporting options, which requires users to find a special page, take a screenshot of the offending post, and choose one of 20 offenses that the post is allegedly committing. People do not have to be registered users of the network to report content.

Critics of the law have included a medley of groups including lobbyists for internet companies, free-speech activists, Reporters Without Borders, and far-right party Alternative for Germany (notable in part due to its rapid growth and flirtation with fascism). Theyve variously identified issues like the risk of censorship, arbitrary enforcement, and the chance it could be abused by a future government less inclined to let German citizens speak their minds.

It is certainly possible that the head of state could take direct influence, lawyer Simon Assion told Sddeutsche Zeitung, according to Deutsche Welle. The Justice Ministry has access to how social networks implement their deleting mechanisms.

Twitter, Google, and Facebook, however, may have encouraged its passage by promising to voluntarily set up a similar system in 2015and then largely failing to comply with the 24-hour deadlines sought by German authorities. According to the New York Times, a yearlong study found that while the services did eventually delete nearly all illegal hate speech, only YouTube was doing so in a timely fashion. All three companies have historically taken a laissez-faire approach to policing use of their platforms by bigots, though their rush to comply with the German law suggests they had the capability to do so.

German authorities have also tackled the problem from the other end, launching raids of dozens of homes where alleged social media hatemongers lived earlier this year. European Union authorities have also taken a strong stance against the proliferation of online hate speech and warned EU-wide regulations could be one solution if tech companies dont enact and enforce stricter policies.

@Doom_Art no worries man. Re the fourth wall the most egregious instance is when Kylo and Rey are fighting over the lightsaber and Kylo's basically shouting directly at the audience, but then there's the bit with Leia at the end too where she's telling Luke "You showed up at the end. That's all that matters."
A theme of letting the past die would be all right with me if it wasn't so in your face as a metaphor to a divided fanbase.

@Ammonitida no trolling, man, I just found it to be a dull scene. Maybe the level of what we appreciate in terms of action scenes has been degraded as an audience over the years, but there was no technically flair to it. Each Praetorian guard had a sort of different weapon but very little focus on what they could accomplish, or how/why they were dangerous.
Daisy Ridley should have been trained better for the lightsaber fight because she just sort of fumbled around, and while I'll admit that watching Kylo Ren swing his like a claymore was pretty sick, it's not enough to save the fight.
There's very little in terms of dramatic stakes to the battle either, because they've just killed Snoke and while you're well aware Rey/Kylo will win, the Praetorian Guard doesn't feel particularly threatening.

Like sure it's neat when Kylo busts a hole in that dude's face, but it can't save a middling battle.
I did some quick looking but it's a little early to find and link the battle itself for comparison, but comparing it to other lightsaber battles of the series it's incredibly lacking. It may be a little disingenuous to compare it directly to Cloud City's exchange between Luke and Vader because of the sheer gravitas of that scene in the cinematic world, but we are in the same series so I think it's appropriate.

What I think the movie really needed was a true lightsaber duel or, at the very least, an equivalently high-stakes battle.

I think to an extent they absolutely did that. I think Rian Johnson saw just how awful the ideas for the new trilogy were and had a list of contractual obligations from Disney, and chose to just go full bore with those in the best sardonic protest since Johnathan Swift was in his prime.

@stoltenberg11 freaking exactly, man. I wanted a major lightsaber duel, some more space battles, just some more action scenes that could really wow us. We got too much of stuff like the Phasma fight which is cool for like a second, and then just ends.

I'll give that the battle in the beginning was dope, but there were no good lightsaber duels in the film. The Praetorian Guard scene barely counts and it was dull anyway, and the final battle that should have been awesome was a copout.
In an odd way the movie was both incredibly safe but exceptionally obtuse, answering questions nobody asked, cutting off the vein of questions that narratively required answers, and asking questions nobody cares about the answer to.

I disagree.

Fair.
I respect your right to disagree with an opinion of subjective entertainment.

You are honestly being unexpectedly reasonable for a person that came in with an intentionally provocative clickbait argument to shill their Youtube video.

Shilling to an extent I'll give you - I make videos for fun because I have a dayjob I don't plan on quitting and I definitely appreciate if and when people are able to check them out, but I don't ever want to push that on people. I also wanted to give the summary of my video in the topic and open it up for further discussion because I absolutely understand how rude it can come off to just pop up your own topic and say "Hey guys here's my video and I want you to watch it!"

But I wouldn't call it intentionally provocative or clickbait. We definitely disagree on our opinions of the movie but this is how I honestly feel about it. When it comes to stuff like movies or videogames though everyone has their own set of likes and dislikes and something that one person thinks is a work of art could be absolute trash to another person.

Really I just wanna hang out and chat about Star Wars XD

Really? Okay.

Space battles, lightsaber duels, space wizards, great action, dramatic twists, basic arguments of good v.s. evil, nostalgic cameos, the explorations of more Star Wars lore, new characters, quirky aliens, cool vehicles and starships, a storyline that emphasized it's bad to deify heroes and obsessive over legends, the shirking of expectations, and a satisfying explanation for Kylo Ren's character.

I mean, that's the whole fucking point of Space Operas, isn't it?

The movie was made intentionally bad and he did it to troll everyone.

I did a video review which you can find here:

[/shameless plug]

But I ain't gonna force you to watch my shit. The point is everything in this movie is so bad that it absolutely has to be intentional, and there's so many times in the movie that they break the fourth wall and talk directly to the audience with heavy-handed shit that you can just see it's Rian Johnson shouting "Look what they made me do!"

And then Luke just up and dies at the end for no reason? Disney obviously wanted to push him out so they could stop paying Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford kind of money for actors.
The whole movie is basically "Our parents are to blame for all our problems" and "Stop liking the old things and just accept what we're giving you!"

It had to be purposely bad, right?
That's the only way it works.

How do you feel about representation of LGBT characters in the media, and does it still work as a progressive movement if it's forced?

Should movies be required to include LGBT characters and openly proclaim their sexuality/gender decisions as part of their character, or should it only be done organically?

Or, in other words, is it still progressive if a gay or trans character exists in a film but it's never mentioned in the film, or only vaguely referenced (photo on a wall, passing statement?)

But you guys remember when some fat chick was diversity hired to play a role directly marketed because of the race of the character in an attempt to say "Hey, look what we did!"
The role in the movie itself has nothing to do with race, but the Star Wars team is damn sure patting themselves on the back and basically screaming "Look guys, we hired an Asian!"

This is kind of a ridiculous thing to say. Are movie studios not allowed to hire minority actors without fear of getting accused of just trying to fill diversity checkboxes?

They absolutely can.

It's when they go so far as to pat themselves on the back for doing it that it becomes a race thing.

Smash 4 (3ds)'s meta revolves around turtling. The most effective way to play is to keep your guard up and stay away from the opponent, letting then come to you.
Punish them when they try to go on the offense because defense is crazy prioritized in this game.

That's prob the best tip I can offer

Instead I'm going to see this arthouse film where three black male to female transgender women and a Persian lesbian have a fly trapped in a jar and they just sit in a circle watching it for 3 hours, in black and white, with no dialogue.

Is the soundtrack any good?

The only music in the film plays at the beginning and during the credits.
It's the same song, it's by an indie band called Modified Daughters and they play the track "Home Was Where The Heart Was" from their album "Modern Women Have Penises."

It's kind of like garage folk rock except the only instrument is a ukulele and someone beating a trash can to death and the singer is tone deaf. She just wails into the microphone, makes different animal sounds, and occasionally repeats the line "My parents didn't love me the Lord was up above me" eight times in a row.

You can find them on Soundcloud.
