I don't need to tell you that the forum is a dead format. But I mean communities in general. Up through to maybe the early to mid 2010s, shortly before phoneposting took off, the focus was on Internet communities. Today, it doesn't seem like there are communities. Just content creators and their followers.

I think that's on purpose. I think it's meant to be the driving engine behind "Web 3.0" because that's what's most profitable. You own a platform. People on your platform make content. People on your platform then gather massive audiences. Advertisers pay you for that kind of foot traffic. Maybe you cut the content creators some of the dough.

But how much money do advertisers have to throw around? I'm always skipping ads. I feel like this has to be a bubble. Why are advertisers paying so much for what I can only assume is earning them no new customers?

Shadowrun is pretty close to modern times.

Otherwise some of the GTA games kinda fit the bill, as do the Saints Row games (overlooking that SR4 has aliens, and then just ignoring Gat Out of Hell).

Honestly, unless you're kinda changing the idea of "set in modern times" to be some weird alt-verse with magic, etc, crime-themed games are probably the most logical choice. The kinda modern take on the quest, for instance, would be something like a heist (which would bring together a group of "adventurers" -- with very specialized skills -- on a mission to face overwhelming odds to get their hands on an item or loot).

However, if you are going magic, you'd probably just do urban fantasy of some kind.

Let's say I wanna play Mother 4, but I can't because it doesn't exist. Are there any RPGs set in modern times that I can hitch my fandom wagon to?

Well there's Persona, that's going on strong. You play it, it's nice, but then you think "This is a very Japanese game. And it makes me wonder what an American version of this would look like." You go looking for WRPGs. But they're all either set in medieval times, or are Fallout. You can't find the American Persona. Or any kind of WRPG set in modern times.

So now you have to imagine what that might look like, if someone was to make it. What would it look like? What would its hero(es) look like?

Simple answer is probably "I dunno, modern? Persona but you're in America?" But think a little more about it. Based on the culture of Western video game design, what direction do you think it would take?

Me, if a WRPG set in modern times was a thing, I feel like it would take inspiration from games like Heavy Rain or Alan Wake or Beyond: Two Souls. Or a Telltale game. Or even L.A. Noire. If you think about where JRPGs get inspiration for their heroes, the Western equivalent of that is where we get our heroes for games like these. The hero of a WRPG would be an everymannish something-like detective who's sad about something.

Like the heroes of Silent Hill or Resident Evil. These games are developed by Japanese teams, but are deliberately Western-influenced. Ergo, everymannish something-like detective who's sad about something. For some reason when developers think "West," they think everymannish something-like detective who's sad about something.

Cartoon Network so badly wanted in on that teen star/starlet market that Disney and Nickelodeon had. Why should only Disney and Nickelodeon get to have both cartoons and marketable teenage idols?

If only they had the foresight to see that the whole teen idol thing would be dead by now. And that adult nerds on Twitter, or writing video essays on YouTube, fixated on cartoons, that is the future. They could've capitalized early. Today, the All That reboot is dead, while the fandom refuses to let DuckTales die. It has an in-universe podcast, that's how much money DuckTales prints.

Because I can't think of any offhand, unlike the GDC which offered Cyber Wars, Treasure-Crypt, Battle Things, etc. All of those are lost to time. Yahoo killed *all* of that. Yahoo was the direct cause for those things no longer existing.

Then I have a secondary beef with Yahoo over its non-stop security issues and the fact it erased my old email addresses which caused me to lose out on both memories as well as the ability contact old friends who I had lost touch with.

Not Yahoo! Games, I didn't even know that was a thing. I mean stuff like Yahoo! Answers, Yahoo! Groups, Yahoo! Instant Messenger, etc.

Obviously it still has its search engine, which was always its most famous offering. iirc, it used to be one of the options in Firefox, but it got replaced by Bing which is basically just a pared-down Google search.

Fuck Yahoo games. Yahoo took over and discontinued the Games Domain Castle on the grounds that they already had their inferior games service, which didn't even include many of the games offered in the GDC.

Yahoo is the fucking worst. I'm largely happy to see the company fade away and classify itself as obsolete after all they've done over the years.

You still have Jagex, Jagex is still making games, if not thriving right now. Everything that was good and memorable about Yahoo! is gone now.
