After that, just 2-3 years ago, I got a Lenovo... something for like $330 from BBuy. However, its performance was never great (possibly the AMD cpu rather than an i5+) so I wound up getting a Dell something or other (because I missed a better Black Friday sale last year) which has been having some issues. So last year I got a Dell... something for over $300 which has an i5, a SSD (only like 256GB?), etc. I figured between the two laptops, I'd get the same functionality I used to get from just the HP Envy. (Then I also got chromebook that year, which was more useful than the kindle fire7.)

I was looking at a current version of the HP Envy, but I think I am going to get the Asus Vivobook instead. Virtually the same specs (AMD Ryzen 3 instead of Intel), but for almost $150 less. And the missus is looking at a Chromebook.

I have a good event in the pipeline: Because my employer is still doing holiday bonuses for managers (despite the pandemic), and because this is my first year qualifying to receive 100% of said bonus, I will be able to get a new laptop. Been using this one since 2012, and it has needed a replacement since 2016, but I have managed to keep it alive due to lack of funds. Needless to say, I am extremely happy that I will be able to retire it.

Granted, the new machine is not going to be top-shelf (e.g. only 8 GB RAM, relatively small built-in SSD), but it should be able to run most of the games that I want to play, and I will be able to watch online video at a normal speed and resolution again. In addition, thanks to Cyber Monday sales at Amazon, I have been able to get all the accessories I want for it at a steal (e.g. external 250 GB SSD, external DVD drive, USB 3.0 hub, a 64 GB SD card, etc.).

Biggest task is going to be transferring Steam stuff (and making sure Steam works in the first place), but I have flash drives for that.

Hmm. Roku Channel has a deal on its Viewster Anime sub-channel. *looks* $1.99 U.S. / month for the first three months, then $3.99 U.S. / month after that. Relatively small selection, but there are titles on there that I have not seen other places for a good while. *subscribes* Giving it a try.

Hmm. That combination of colors, coupled to the late '80s / early '90s character design, suggests one of the older designs for Athena Asamiya from the King of Fighters series. Almost looks like her old Psycho Soldier design, IMO.

My best man had a projector in his man cave for years, and he said the biggest issue he had with it was that it required specialized bulbs that burn out fairly easily and are very expensive.

Starting to watch anime again, albeit a little bit at a time. I only realized recently just how much the pandemic has changed many of my lifestyle habits. Also starting to get back to JRPGs, but, again, a little at a time.

I enjoy VNs, as you are aware from a certain series of topics, but I have not been playing them as of late because this poor laptop is old enough to be asking for the brains of the living, at this point.

The last one I played was a tongue-in-cheek short called Main Character Simulator.

For Danmachi, I decided to take the plunge and get into the light novels. Ordered the first volume each of the original series, the Sword Oratoria spin-off (the real draw for me, since I like the Loki Familia), and Episode Lyu (... should be Ryu, IMO, but every version of Danmachi has different spellings for the names). I already know that I am going to be picky about the translation, but I am still willing to give it a go.

The big gripe for me is that browsing anything with extremely long titles and multiple versions on Amazon makes it difficult to find the exact item. Almost bought the manga version of at least one of those books by mistake.

The entire discipline of editing -- in chief, or otherwise -- seems to have gone down the toilet since the '80s, be it for comic book franchises, video game series, or individual books, and I cannot put my finger on the why of it. I always thought it was a thing that could be taught, but ... perhaps not?

Speaking as a fan of the series: If you have played any of the Fire Emblem games, including the remake of the original on DS, the first Fire Emblem is almost unplayable by modern standards. Good to see it as a novelty release, but I would have been happy with it staying in Japan.

I am open to the idea of a Last Starfighter sequel. Loved the original as a kid.

And I wonder if Whedon will come anywhere near superhero movies again after being slagged for the Justice League debacle. (Granted, I like that movie, as I have said here before, but ... I am not going to pretend that it is great, and I am still crossing my fingers for the Snyder Cut.)

As far as Peter Parker shipping goes, since that is a subject here, I miss him being married to the '90s version of Mary Jane, back before Marvel decided comic book M.J. had to look like Kirsten Dunst.

I never watched the original Higurashi anime (unless you count memes circulating on the Internet in the early 2000s). I read a little of the manga. No interest in the new anime. ... Having the VN on Steam might have spoiled me for any adaptations.

That makes me a hypocrite, since I prefer the Fate / Stay Night anime (and its associated prequels, sequels, and spin-offs) to the VN, but that might be because the VN fan base pissed me off.

This feels like me with Super Robot Wars. Hearing about a new one makes me stare at my backlog, though I eventually end up getting it anyway.

I recall using Windows 95 for Quake and pulling up the DOS prompt to play everything I used to play in Windows 3.1.

Hulu surprised me today by telling me that there is a show called Helstrom. As in the obscure magic-using character(s) from Marvel Comics in the 1970s. That alone is enough to pique my interest. (See also: That Moon Knight show that might one day turn up on Disney Plus.)

I'm always surprised that anime doesn't do more to future-proof itself when it comes to game systems. All you'd have to do is create your own system.

To be fair, there was a Love Hina game, possibly more than one, on the Dreamcast, so the author was tipping the hat.

Ironically, Tolkien also influenced a LOT of fantasy that wasn't just aping him, in that a lot of writers (especially in the 70s) went out of their way to be as unlike Tolkien as possible, because they thought all the imitators were homogenizing the fantasy genre as a whole. So trying to avoid his cliches created entirely new styles of fantasy (some of which eventually became their own cliches for future writers).

And then Star Wars happened.

One of the movies is a feature-length retelling of the first episode, with a ton of early bird cameos and references. They modernized things a bit from the 90s so people actually have cell phones and such such, but other then that it doesn't really interfere with canon.

See also: Rereleases of the Sailor Moon manga changing floppy disks into CDs, etc.

I still get a chuckle out of Kaolla Su having a Dreamcast in Love Hina.

Well, I'm a linguist (... and a hack), and I can confirm that, but my comment above was a bit tongue-in-cheek (... because I hate FFN and what it does to formatting).

For a while it became almost standard that every fantasy novel had to have little poem/song fragments in them (because Tolkien did it).

Wheel of Time is a good example of this, though I noticed that the songs more or less disappeared after the first book.

That might be because Rune Factory 4 Special has been emphasized as a digital release, too. As for the series as a whole, they are niche titles, but RF4 is far and away the most popular of the lot.
