The A&W didn't taste anything like rootbeer, it was exactly like pure melted caramel, maybe with some shitty vanilla extract poured into it. It was so strong, overpowering even. It made its way up my throat and into my nose, just from having a swig in my mouth. I can't remember if it was super carbonated or not, it may have been a bit flat -- I just remember the godawful taste. We tried to like it, but quickly saw it was a losing battle. The jugs stayed there untouched the entire picnic. I'm thinking it was some sort of mistake, maybe they gave us the wrong drink...two damn pints of the wrong drink...but it was horrible. Shit didn't even come with a lable, it was just two white jugs, each one a little larger than a pint but smaller than a gallon. It's like they gave us the factory reject material.
