I've always been a little afraid of something like this happening, so usually when I start feeling that way about a girl I know is straight I tend to overcorrect and put the clamp down hard on my feelings.

Which usually results in us talking a lot less and me being walled off emotionally.

Not the best reaction but I keep hearing about this sort of thing and just, man, it breaks my heart just reading it, I wouldn't want to go through that.

Which is weird because I don't react quite that same way with other people - I tend to get feelings for my best friends every now and again, usually I just swallow it up and let it fade instead of concsciously avoiding thinking about those feelings. (Assuming of course I don't confess to them, which I usually don't for one reason or another.) Kinda weird that them not at all being into me owing to my gender - as opposed to just not being into me or wanting to date in general - changes that up for some reason. I mean, same result, but a sort of less ... paranoid reaction from me I guess?

I don't know if I actually want to date again, especially after this, but it would be unwise to rule it out completely, or go into it without understanding how it works now.

It's pretty normal after any sort of breakup to just stay single for a while. You don't have to jump right back into the dating pool.

Personally it sounds like divorce is your best option though, if she's not actively trying to help preserve the relationship.
