Even with specifically designated save points, you still have to open the menu and scroll down to the save option in order to save.

Cuts down on programming time.

FF1 made you walk all the way back to town to save. To had to go into the building.

It's more annoying trying to exit a game and not being sure where it autosaved last. I always prefer to have some form of manual saving somewhere.
