But some turn based games require a lot of planning and indepth knowledge of the mechanics especially for bonus levels. Eh, not in my experience. The most depth I've ever seen is weaknesses/resistances, and that's easily managed. I had a history teacher in high school who graded our notes, at the end of the 1st semester he went over our grades. he said I didn't do the homework, or take good notes, but was getting a "c" because I passed all the tests... My school was basically the same. You had to ask for homework (not counting writing papers), and it was added to your grade so that if you tested poorly you could still pass by putting in extra work.
