Because social security is politically popular enough that any politician who attacked it would be committing metaphorical suicide.
Opposing the individual mandate is 'popular' for Republicans, so Republican politicians will do just that.

You seem to be implying that political positions are actually based on a series of coherent ideological principles in which case AHAHAHAHAHAHA oh man that's a good one

MWIS, i'm really really intersted in your Game of Thrones game but since I am only 300 pages into the first book i will not touch it with a 10 foot pole.

Don't worry. My first Game of Thrones game will only cover events in the first book (or the first HBO series season) so more people can participate, and spoilers from future books will be explicitly banned from being referenced.

If it's really popular, my hope is that I can host subsequent iterations of the game covering subsequent seasons: so my second game would be a Clash of Kings game and take place sometime after Season Two of the HBO series airs, etc.

By the time I'm ready to host it, I imagine you'll have finished Book One.

As for co-hosting: I kind of want Sir Chris to play (doesn't every Mafia host?) and I kind of want someone remotely familiar (but perhaps not too familiar) with the universe of the series to co-host.

Big question is how large I want the game to be. Seriously, there's a sufficient cast to justify an enormous game. As is I think it will be one of the larger games here but probably not quite on Ulti's Smash Brothers level of insanity.

Dear MWIS,

Many years ago I had a very low opinion of you because of my own pettiness. I was very jealous of you because you had the admiration of the board for your ability to write. Ever since I was a young boy, around the age of eight or so, I have wanted to do nothing more with my life than to become a writer. It was my dearest passion and dearest dream. When others said you were a better writer than I was and all of your projects blew up I became very jealous and let that color my opinion of you for a very long time. I am very sorry about that, I have realized for years now that there was nothing good or kind about my feelings back then. It was childish beyond any words, and I apologize deeply. Also, with respect to every other apology I have offered so far, this one is sincerely the most sincere. You are a very clever person, MWIS.

And I still don't even know if he's just incompetent or a corporate tool.

I'm in the 'incompetent' camp.
Looking into Obama's past, he certainly doesn't seem to have been groomed to bend over backwards for corporate America.
But I do now think we'd have been far better off if Hillary got the Presidency, despite having supported Obama over her at the time. Obama's primary problem is his inexperience, he's letting himself get completely trampled and outsmarted by every turn. The Dems control the White House and the Senate but you wouldn't guess it based on how Obama's capitulated to the House.

The only thing that doesn't make sense to me is why Hillary and other halfway experienced Democrats on Obama's team have enabled this to happen. With Hillary, I'm guessing it's because she wants to replace Biden as VP in 2012 so she can align herself as Obama's successor, and in order to do so Hillary needs to ensure Obama's in enough of a sticky situation by 2012 to require a change. Biden's specialization was always foreign affairs, and his foot-in-mouth syndrome has eradicated a fair deal of his credibility.

The Obama tragedy in my opinion is he'd have made a great President if he waited another decade or so and built up serious Senate cred and established a solid network of his own progressive supporters in high-ranking positions before running. He needed to have staffers who were his own people, not opponents like Hillary and Biden. And he needed more of a reputation as a progressive firebrand who'd accomplish something to ensure opponents would actually begrudgingly respect him. He could have begun garnering that reputation by pushing a better Healthcare Reform package through the Senate for President Hillary.

Personally I've found that most of Community's gags are pretty hysterical the first time you hear them, but they lose much of their luster upon additional viewings. The show is still good, but I enjoy the repeats more for the chemistry between Joel McHale and Allison Brie and the creativity of some of the motifs.

This can basically be contrasted with It's Always Sunny and Arrested Development, where the humor value of the jokes is miraculously retained -- I can watch their episodes over and over again and still find something new to laugh at.

Community actually reminds me of Frasier in a sense. I don't find most Frasier repeats of episodes I've already seen nearly as laugh-out-loud funny (the physical humor retains some value, but dialogue that once evoked laughter no longer does), but I still love the characters enough to compensate for the lost humor. Community is a similar way -- even when I'm not laughing out loud, I still find myself thoroughly invested enough in Jeff, Annie, Abed and Troy (less so Britta and Shirley, but still) to watch.

Man if Town already has enough trouble winning Mafia games on its own against traditional Scum power roles, the idea of adding 'Scum Confirmable' roles to games is horrific. Suddenly you wouldn't be able to trust virtually any claimed Town Power roles, and that's one of the few things Town can and should rely upon to help them climb the information disparity gap and stand a chance in hell against scum.

I said this before in the Bible Mafia topic, but you basically could have stuck Scum Prosty on a two or three person scum team in a game that large and he'd still have a decent chance of winning. If you suddenly started toying with Scum Inventor or Scum Mayor or Scum Doctor (ugh) and threw them into the mix the results could well be catastrophic.

Let's not forget that Luis played a subpar game from town's perspective (even I conceded that while defending him) and was scummier than he could have been. A stronger scum-aligned player who'd actually be capable of acting more pro-town (and less inactive) while playing the role of 'Prosty' would've absolutely done us in.

Uhh, not really? There was one slip I made because I was thinking of information that should have been revealed in Book Two that was in fact not revealed until Book Three, and I redacted that. It was my attempt to simultaneously not reveal anything concrete to Vincent while providing enough so those who have read Book Three would be like "Yeah, I can see that."

The rest of my comments about Book Three really amount to "I liked it more" and "Book Three did a few of its twists better." Absolutely nothing specific is revealed.

Problem is the story doesn't really have a single main character to replace Ned, so even if you got a new star actor, there isn't a strong lead role to give them.

If they did find a star actor for just one new role, I'd want it to be Davos or Melisandre over Stannis, actually.

Actually, scratch Melisandre, it's better she's an unknown. Maybe a Greyjoy or a Tyrell, then.

OR: Best solution possible would be to have a celebrity guest in as Qhorin. In that sense, the celebrity wouldn't have to spend more than a season on set, but Jon Snow gets a great actor to bounce off and the series retains its Sean Bean-led buzz.

Now that you've finished Clash...

(Spoilers up to Book Two.)

Of the five books, I found Clash of Kings by far the most predictable. I have a bit of a habit of predicting major upcoming plot developments and twists as I read along, and I basically nailed most of what Martin intended to do with Clash, which made it my least favorite of the titles.

I knew that Stannis and Melisandre would deal with Renly first, and I knew Renly didn't stand a chance.

I knew that the Royal forces in King's Landing were going to win the battle against Stannis before it happened. Davos only had something like three POV chapters in the entire book, Stannis was woefully undeveloped, Tyrion was outsmarting everybody, Melisandre was sent back to Dragonstone.

I knew the Greyjoys would attack the North because everything bad that can happen to the Starks must happen to the Starks. The tragedies occurring to the protagonists were unpredictable in Book One, when it truly seemed to thwart all conventional expectations, by Book Two you knew going in that there would be no Stark reunions, no moments of happiness for them, just a bunch of meandering around and plot contrivances to separate them (admittingly the worst of these contrivances, involving Arya, doesn't happen until Book Three, but still.)
I was actually a huge fan of a certain Book Three twist because that caught me off guard, but nothing in Book Two had a similar effect.

Catelyn's chapters read like a horrifying descent into misery. I'll concede her chapter when she interacted in a three-way meeting with Renly and Stannis was one of my favorites.

Tryion's chapters, on the other hand, read like the coming of the Hallowed Lord Marty Stu. Let me get this straight, I like Tryion, but I like him most when I feel he's relatable and flawed. Book Three does a great job of sending Tyrion crashing back to Earth, which is why I loved it, but too much of Book Two's Tyrion chapters read like he was a demigod of human wit and strategy. I get contrasting Tyrion with Ned Stark -- Tyrion's clearly the better choice between those two -- but several moments with Tyrion just irritated me to the point where I was actually sort of hoping Tyrion would actually lose for a change, and it sucks when an author actually writes a character you really like in such a way that you're worried you may begin to dislike him.

Beyond that, Davos got shafted -- he or someone else close to Stannis needed more POV chapters. Renly's faction sort of got shafted too, and I almost wish Martin had started Brienne POV chapters in Book Two so we got a better look at him. One of the most important developments for the Starks [redacted because it's not technically spoiled until Book Three, but let's just say a certain character really needed his own POV sequence there.]

(I guess what I'm saying there is that I actually agree more with Martin's current approach of handing out more frequent 'guest POV' moments to other characters.)

Also, I found Daenerys' Chapters in Clash the worst out of all four books in which she appears (note that I have not finished Dragons, so I guess that might change.) I think that's one thing the first book did far better than the second, the Daenerys chapters really captivated me in the first book and became a slight letdown thereafter. (Admittingly Drogo being alive and the Dragons twist helped a fair deal.)

Same with Jon Snow, actually. Liked his training sequences in Book One, liked the Wildling sequences in Book Three, but in-between Book Two is simply this long journey to get Snow from point A to point B, and not much of interest happens aside from Snow killing Qhorin.

Things I liked in Book Two -- and I might as well remind you that I really do like every book in the series an awful lot, even my 'least favorite' -- included everything Theon, as Theon had some of the better surprise moments, starting of course with his sister and ending with his family abandoning him and a tiny force at Winterfall. The Tyrion chapters also included some quality foreshadowing of book three developments, but on its own merits and stripped of context in the series, the scenes sort of fall flat.

It's just my opinion, mind you.

My only big concern is that they haven't found a big name to replace Sean Bean's marketability. As much as I actually prefer strong character actors in Medieval pieces over the really recognizable ones, without a face to attach a brand to, Thrones might seriously lose steam.

I was hoping they'd go with someone unfamiliar for Melisandre because a familiar looking actress (even a very attractive one) would have taken away from the character. So I'm satisfied there.

But...uhh...Stannis...well I did always imagine him sort of gaunt, but...he looks older than Robert. O_o
Yeah I kind of was imagining something else for Stannis.

Still waiting for Blackfish casting news. Don't keep pretending the Blackfish doesn't exist, HBO.
Pretty sure they almots outright said no Blackfish.

WHAT?!?!?

Not ever? Not even by like, Book Four?
