Oh and let's not forget our favourite detective, Orym White, whose character arc rivals fan-favourites Dick Gumshoe and Ema Skye and... whose character development was... is... um, his greatest moments - oh sorry, these were my notes for if his character arc didn't get left on the cutting board. But it sounds like it would've been great!

I would basically rank this game higher than AJ, DD, and AA1 by default just for making me actually care about the characters, which is a decent accomplishment for what is only a few steps up from a fangame. (And I don't think any other AA fangame has done that, certainly not aviary attorney)

And I like Celeste more than basically any of the non-Maya sidekicks (other than Susato) and Aria more than like half the prosecutors. And Ruby is a refreshing take on the mentor angle as well, I wish she'd done a bit more in the end but maybe it got cut as well, I hope she gets some redemption in the sequel. And even Tyrion himself, I mean, I feel he's a more coherent and relatable character than Apollo is, even with how hard DD and SoJ tried to salvage his character.

Oh and the music is actually really good. It doesn't always fit the moment and themes tend to start/end awkwardly, but the Objection, Pursuit, etc themes are great and Celeste's theme is lovely.

In seriousness, I mean, yeah, I basically agree that case 5 doesn't quite reach the peaks it should, but the segment involving Celeste and Pierce and the contract was genuinely intriguing in a way that lots of late-era Ace Attorney games never managed to be (Even good games like the GAA duology never really had you shocked about the circumstances of specific events like the original trilogy did back in the day) so it has that in its favor, and it works well for the character arcs which, as I said, is the main thing I'm invested in, so, whatever. Case 4 is probably the tightest ("best") case when it comes to just the mechanics of the murder mystery. They did want to do more with case 5 I think but had to wrap it up for budget reasons (this is why Alaric being polymorphed goes literally nowhere) so oh well but hopefully the sequel will have more room to work with.

This is taking me a while because this game is too open-ended in its evidence. I've spent no fewer than 20 times trying to contradict Celeste's statements about her timeline with the fact that Aria's timeline doesn't match up because she went sicko mode before 1:45, and even got a game over in the Asmodeus/Horus battle because of it. Turned out they specifically wanted me to present von Sanctus's death because he was killed too early for it to be from Aria signing a contract after Celeste signing one.

This is extremely frustrating.

I do recall getting stuck on something frustrating around that point.

"too many meta jokes" is another thing i associate with low quality fangames, but this game didn't overdo it and really made it land when they did them

i mean, surely he's still... villain-ish, right? He's not a good guy? He gets in your money and is a bad person...?

okay so as you can see, i forgot who the villain in this case was. which is just a testament to how forgettable it is, really.

I think it would be funny if E1-1 ended up the highest ranked case in the game just for being brief, inoffensive, and fairly neat.

But I haven't played this game in long enough (basically since the week it released) to remember if I actually agree with that. From what I recall, the start of this case still had the game feeling fresh, and the airplane setup was cool and I liked Rhoda but then the case just sort of went nowhere and idk I don't remember anything about it other than Rhoda's love of suitcases. Zinc Lablanc is not a good villain.

i couldn't quite recall if the structure of case 4 started with trial or investigation, tbh.

Wait, I'm confused on where you are. The previous post (about how a case can end without using all the evidence) made me assume you meant you were done with case 3, so you've done the first trial day of case 4, or?

its kinda sad that the circumstances led to such an anticlimactic and awkward finale, but in retrospect it makes for an interesting story.

i also can't even begin to imagine the patience that people needed to have to do this level for hours on end. how many hours exactly did the person who beat it spend overall...?

Echoing the others, but the scenes around there also had me absolutely dying of laughter and that was about when I realized, oh, I actually like these characters. It's rare for a piece of fiction to even get me to truly laugh at all, I don't know if I can say the ace attorney games ever did - so that's definitely one of the reasons I value this game despite its rough edges.

Yeah this is all true. I unsubscribed from everything but a few niches and gaming subs so I guess I forgot lots of reddit can be like that. And it's a good point that the sort of toxicity that represents an actual lifestyle/worldview that would make you miserable, is probably worse than just fighting about anime and video games opinions on a gamefaqs board.

i can't believe i'm saying this since i think reddit is insanely toxic, but gamefaqs is more toxic.

reddit's toxicity mostly comes from the groupthinking and comformity and how you will be treated if you post any opinion that is even slightly out of line or if you mess up a social taboo that you didn't know existed. but if that's not happening, a decent amount of threads will still be, like, normal and mature.

meanwhile on gamefaqs, literally any board other than board 8, every thread is just a bunch of 13-year olds squabbling with each other and accusing each other of being trolls. which made sense 20 years ago but its still the same today even though the site doesn't get new users, and if you check the account dates of the people involved, there's no way they're in their teens at all anymore, so i really don't get how they're somehow all still so immature.

reddit's toxicity is kinda more insidious though because at least on gamefaqs its a bunch of socially stunted adults who can't help themselves and are mostly harmless, on reddit it comes from people who are otherwise proper adults but still can't resist a bit of bullying when they see that someone has stepped out of line.

Yeah I mean this is a series that doesn't, like, have Mia turn to you at the start of a trial and say "By the way, Phoenix - just to be clear, there's no way anything like spirit channeling exists" so in that context, maybe they do need to clarify.

yeah, case 2 has lots of neat parts! i remember feeling smart for figuring out that the whole "she was rude to me" was her saying "be quiet!" to everyone she passed. i was also disappointed the smell didn't matter much.

I definitely relate to your feelings. It was my biggest issue with the game as well. I don't play much survival horror, but I tried to think back to when I played the classic RE games, and I remember loving the backtracking due to limited inventory in REmake, yet here it just wasn't working, and I think it's because, like you said, there wasn't much tension to it, it was just a chore. Go down all these hallways, get 2 of the 4 items in this room, go back to storage, go right back to the room, get the last 2 items, go back to storage...

You're probably better off with the extra inventory. Didn't exist when I played.

I'm curious if anyone has ever come up with an explanation for how this plot point makes sense, because I want to force my head-canon of it to make sense so that I can stop being annoyed by how dumb it is every time I replay the game

We are told that she became a laughingstock and got the police accused of fraud because she "got the killer wrong", even though the courts did agree they were the killer and only got off due to insanity plea or whatever. My best attempt at this is to say, well, since the trial was top secret, maybe the public never knew about the insanity thing, they only knew the Not Guilty verdict...? But that doesn't make much sense.

Nevermind that Grossberg tells us in 1-2 that "the case is still unsolved to this day". ??????????? I don't see how there can be any excuse for that one.

The most likely candidate they're trying to copy here is IGN, actually - almost every "x guide" google search leads to them first, so it probably leads to tons of traffic.

IGN's guides are (sometimes) pretty good though (at least if it's for a game that's popular enough for them to have put in a real effort)

Isn't the protagonist a kid? I don't really remember.

But perhaps you should view it less as "protagonist is a thoughtful person with agency who has a goal" and more like "kid ends up in weird world, just starts exploring and meeting people and going along with whatever they're told" (as i recall, toriel and other NPCs start guiding you around and telling you what to do pretty quickly)
