Do not live in the iron triangle and avoid living off North Ave (mainly the part that is north of the North Oconee River). If you live outside of those areas, then Athens is pretty safe. However, the lodge is a very nice apartment complex.

Hmm, this is a predicament. Places I'm looking at are p close to North Avenue. As someone who doesn't drive, not much I can do about that...

That might explain that. What I'm looking at it is pretty close to UGA and the tech college. Reading about the mischievous people who hang out around Piggly Wiggly and about a shooting that happened at an apartment complex, among other things.

I like coffee shops and convenience stores. As far as places to stop and browse go, I enjoy CD/record stores, but those have been a dying breed for quite some time now.

Athens is a pretty nice area of Georgia all things considered.

What I saw of it looked fine to me. I don't have too much reservation about living in either town, even if they aren't exactly the same atmosphere.

A week or two ago I thought I was headed to Fairmont, WV. Things change fast.

For some reason being in a 'military hick town' doesn't necessarily bother me. I've lived in busy city atmospheres and I've lived in the 'burbs, though. Only kind of town I've never lived in is a small town.

guess i'll give a general location list of the positions (should have done that awhile back, wh00ps):

GA: Atlanta area, Athens area
NC: Raleigh
SC: almost precisely on the border of NC and SC (not sure if that means anything)
VA: VA Beach (a lot of posters here frightened me about Northern VA, but i hadn't applied to a NoVA position recently if ever so hey)
WV: Both are in towns that by WV standards are populated (top 7 or 8) even if by other states' standards they'd be ordinary township sized. basically there's legit access to convenience stores and fast food and yadda yadda, not just staring at mountains all day

Is Jersey good for anything other than factories and making you feel like a moron that can't pump your own gas?

It's good at being ruthlessly authoritarian/legalistic and having impossibly expensive property taxes/mortgages/etc.

There actually are nice parts of this state, but they're few and far between and I'm unlikely to find work there. I'm too soured on other aspects of living here to be eager to embrace them, too.
