Face masks are mandatory in PA when leaving your house now, not just when going into businesses anymore. People criticize gov Wolf; and yeah hes made mistakes. But I think hes been fantastic at handling this all around.

This takes a burden off front line workers who were being made accountable for enforcing mask wear inside their place of work. If you are not going to wear a mask, stay home.

My state, Illinois, had a budget impasse where day care centers and special child care centers went under and everyone forgot about as though it did not happen. If there is a future where we do not have barbers, bars and gyms; ie price-accessible ones; then we forget we ever had them and do without.

I blame it on both. States going YOLO on reopening without a plan/preparation and people either becoming complacent or just downright ignoring guidelines.

That said, this is a Trump official not names Faucci saying this? I'm surprised.

My point about blaming individuals is that leaving the spread/containment of a potentially dangerous disease up to individuals discretion and then observing that many individuals lack the necessary discretion is non leadership.

Apparently the mortality rate of COVID has gone way down at this hospital in Italy. Of course it's just one hospital in Italy so it may or may not actually mean anything to those of us in the US. But comparing the number of new cases in the US to the number of deaths over time I do think the mortality rate has gone down here as well. We'll probably see some sort of spike in deaths due to the huge increase in cases, but if the mortality rate really has gone down it might not be as bad as people expect.

Still, it's very important to continue wearing masks and social distancing. Hospitals reaching capacity = more people dying.

The tiny particle pollution in New York City is thought to aggravate pneumonia. The lockdown in Italy will have reduced tiny particle pollution.

Can this be why fewer deaths? (That there is less tiny particle air pollution?)

Lots of studies linking fine particle pollution and pneumonia. Here is one.

Coronavirus has downgraded from a "tiger to a wild cat" and could die out on its own without a vaccine, an infectious diseases specialist has claimed.
Prof Matteo Bassetti, head of the infectious diseases clinic at the Policlinico San Martino hospital in Italy, told The Telegraph that Covid-19 has been losing its virulence in the last month and patients who would have previously died are now recovering.
The expert in critical care said the plummeting number of cases could mean a vaccine is no longer needed as the virus might never return.

More than 51,000 residents and employees of nursing homes and long-term care facilities have died, representing more than 40 percent of the total death toll in the United States.

In Illinois recently the figure for employees of long term care facilities infected by coronavirus was 7,000 iirc

Article pay walled it wasn't when I read it but the gist of it is the nursing homes are kicking out healthy people often by force in favor of corona patients since they get $600 more a day in Medicaid if elderly person has corona. Its all about money.

They Just Dumped Him Like Trash: Nursing Homes Evict Vulnerable Residents
Nursing homes across the country are kicking out old and disabled residents and sending them to homeless shelters and rundown motels.

[pic] Lakeview Terrace, a nursing home in Los Angeles, evicted RC Kendrick, an 88-year-old man with dementia.Credit...Andrew Cullen for The New York Times

On a chilly afternoon in April, Los Angeles police found an old, disoriented man crumpled on a Koreatown sidewalk.
Several days earlier, RC Kendrick, an 88-year-old with dementia, was living at Lakeview Terrace, a nursing home with a history of regulatory problems. His family had placed him there to make sure he got round-the-clock care after his condition deteriorated and he began disappearing for days at a time.
But on April 6, the nursing home deposited Mr. Kendrick at an unregulated boardinghouse without bothering to inform his family. Less than 24 hours later, Mr. Kendrick was wandering the city alone.
According to three Lakeview employees, Mr. Kendricks ouster came as the nursing home was telling staff members to try to clear out less-profitable residents to make room for a new class of customers who would generate more revenue: patients with Covid-19.

A missing person report for RC Kendrick in January, shortly before his family sent him to Lakeview Terrace.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department
More than any other institution in America, nursing homes have come to symbolize the deadly destruction of the coronavirus crisis. More than 51,000 residents and employees of nursing homes and long-term care facilities have died, representing more than 40 percent of the total death toll in the United States.
But even as they have been ravaged, nursing homes have also been enlisted in the response to the outbreak. They are taking on coronavirus-stricken patients to ease the burden on overwhelmed hospitals and, at times, to bolster their bottom lines.
A Lakeview official said the companys evictions were appropriate and werent an attempt to free space for Covid-19 patients. But similar scenes are playing out at nursing homes nationwide. They are kicking out old and disabled residents among the people most susceptible to the coronavirus and shunting them into homeless shelters, rundown motels and other unsafe facilities, according to 22 watchdogs in 16 states, as well as dozens of elder-care lawyers, social workers and former nursing home executives.
Many of the evictions, known as involuntary discharges, appear to violate federal rules that require nursing homes to place residents in safe locations and to provide them with at least 30 days notice before forcing them to leave.

While the popular conception of nursing homes is of places where elderly people live, much of their business is caring for patients of all ages and income levels who are recovering from surgery or acute illnesses like strokes. Medicare often pays for short-term rehabilitation stints; Medicaid covers longer-term stays for poor people.
Nursing homes have long had a financial incentive to evict Medicaid patients in favor of those who pay through private insurance or Medicare, which reimburses nursing homes at a much higher rate than Medicaid. More than 10,000 residents and their families complained to watchdogs about being discharged in 2018, the most recent year for which data are available.
The pandemic has intensified the situation.
With nursing homes not allowing visitors, there is less outside scrutiny of their practices. Fifteen state-funded ombudsmen said in interviews that some homes appear to be taking advantage of that void to evict vulnerable residents.

Article says Topline case counts overlook where outbreaks are occurring. Nearly half of COVID deaths have occurred in nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. A sizeable portion of Arizona cases has occurred on Indian reservations. Wed prefer that at-risk populations didnt bear the brunt of this disease, but these vulnerable groups tell us nothing about the relative safety of reopening Main Street. By lacking this context in their stories, the media is distorting with statistics.

I totally disagree. I believe that locking down to protect vulnerable populations is the wisest decision. These lives are of more value to our society than the loss of national product.

In Florida, I would believe they are doing that, but I don't everywhere. It could easily be that some areas got a weaker strain than others.

County Medical Examiners are overwhelmed. If the deceased dies in hospital and the hospital says coronavirus, it gets counted this way. Otherwise, Medical Examiner is not going to say coronavirus unless the lab is available for running the test. There is also - cold as it sounds - a storage problem in the county medical examiners' office. They need to process at a certain rate.

The deaths still seem on the low end. I remember reading the virus became less lethal, I wonder if thats true?

Edit: at least here. I have no idea whats going on in Brazil

More likely it is reporting deaths as being due to pneumonia and heart seizure.

What's going on? Everybody looks and wonders what the guy did to get beaten?

Everybody watching thinks that if the guy was as sleek and clever as moi, then he would never be in this situation. Everybody beating him thinks that all these dudes are with me being righteous. Half the people on CE think picking your victim and kicking his face in is righteous.

I see in Cali they kick them to death. It only takes one guy with a bat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojrSpd04xWA

It is odd that the guy never thought to put down the bags, must have been the fear seeing who was approaching, idk

This part I understand. Not letting go of the groceries. When you are a kid, Mom sends you to get groceries and all kinds of things happen (in a city like Houston or Chicago). You learn to bring the groceries back no matter what. It is not fear. It is learning to come through for family.
