For anyone who may not know: my family immigrated from Iraq when my parents were in their early 30s. Both of them attended medical school there in mixed-gender classes. My mom out-performed my dad in school and thus was out-earning him as a physician - this was back in the 80s and very early 90s. There was a sense of nervousness from most of the players, and before we started, our head coach gave a speech where he basically said "If you feel like you're about to pass out and need some water, go get some. You won't get in trouble for it." It felt like such a blessing to hear that lol The awful thing was - I don't recall a single player taking up that offer. We all pushed through and waited for the "designated" break periods to hydrate rather than step aside and grab water while everyone else was still running gassers. The concept of manning up and collectively enduring the punishment was bred into and promoted by everyone, us players on up. We'd sometimes call out teammates who were too hurt to practice, citing "pussy" injuries and stuff.
