Need more info.

I live in a 3000 sq ft. house. including the basement. It is a two story home, built in 1892. There is an attached garage, built in 1987. The well is under the house. The house sits on 0.9 acres of land, with close proximity to two cities and one town, with easy access to a major highway at three locations. The house uses gas for cooking, as well as electric. We have a coal stove, wood stove, and an electric furnace .

There are several neighbors by the house. Roughly 15 would be a good estimate.

There was a buit-in safe in the wall in the den on the first floor, but that was removed by the previous owner. All valuables are kept hidden elsewhere in the house.

In the event of an intruder where lethal force would be needed (and NY is a duty to retreat state so I can't just go blasting), my wife and kids would hide in our bedroom. If the individual comes up the stairs, I don't have to leave my bedroom to have a clean shot from the head to the chest.

I have multiple vantage points and options to pick from if needed, even go so far as to lie prone under my bed in the foot of space.

If things were perfect, I'd use the basement. But anyone who breaks in would be near that entrance

Wowza. Thanks for the story CTLM. Typically when technicians are working at my place I try to keep myself available in case they have questions for me or if I need to move something out of the way. But I don't want to hover over them as they work but sometimes I can't help but wonder if I should or at least keep them within my sights from a distance.

He did everything in front of me. He even technically did his job. The fancy cable box got swapped out for the new one, and the job was done. He just decided to keep the company property when he was finished.
JebronLames posted...
so how did you end up getting the collection agencies off your back?

First, I worked with a teacher of mine from my business classes to write a professional letter. At one point, he had been the VP of a publishing company (Crown Publishing- think Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew) so he knew his stuff. Sent that out.

I then talked to my lawyer to find out what rights I had. He had actually handled my custody case a few months prior to this so he was still on retainer, but that's another story. He sent them a letter threatening legal action and countersuit if they continued to contact me.

Within a month, I had apology letters from BOTH agencies, one of which had their 3rd or 4th overall in charge call me to personally apologize. She said she appreciated my candor and my politeness in the matter. I would never hear from them again.

I still have her letter saved after all these years. It's been 12 years now, but it's more of a testament to me not taking any shit from a company and to remind myself what I can accomplish

really? he got fired? but only after an investigation proved it and the investigation was your doing right? And, i didn't know cable boxes costed that much

He had quit his job and simply took the equipment with him. Selling the parts or even whatever the term is for their "jailbroken" units would fetch a high price.

The companies did checks/scans to make sure your unit was legit, but some technicians knew the overrides and ways around it.

The company KNEW he stole from me. They were the ones who told me. They said I was still responsible, which was wrong. I was not going to be held responsible for employee theft.

I didn't really have to investigate. I used the law, the information they provided, and turned it against them. The hardest part was getting the collection agencies off my back because they kept calling and calling. Once Time Warner said they'd no longer pursue the matter, they conveniently forgot to tell them and that led to more issues

I had a cable guy who stole my cable box. My now exwife and I were having difficulty paying our cable bill (it was HD and recordable), so we went back to basic cable. He came and swapped it out, no problems.

About 6 months later, I got a bill for $600. I called up the company (time Warner) and they wanted me to pay for the stolen box. They knew he stole it, and he stole 13 others from people.

Long story short, took a year and an half, telling two different collection agencies to piss off (professionally), consulting a lawyer, and threats of going to court in order for them to leave me alone and drop the charges

Who says you need a house to have sex? Also, look at the person he had sex with. I'm willing to bet they're not a model.

When you look at some of the people who are having sex or had sex, the first word that comes to mind in yuck. Anyone can get laid if they lower their standards enough, but it's best to not go so far down as to gross people out.

It's an act of war to assassinate the #2 guy in a country.

It can be. But Ferdinand wasn't assassinated by the President of the United States. He wasn't assassinated by a drone strike.

He was killed by a Bosnian Serb nationalist. Several countries started pointing fingers as to who truly was at fault. Everyone knows who did it in present day.

The Major General of Iran was killed by a drone strike that came from our country, ordered from the President.

It's not ok. I promise you if a cop ever approaches me with such a piss poor attitude, short of me being covered in blood of a person laying at my feet or something, I'm not going to take it. I'm going to demand I be treated like a human and addressed in a reasonable manner before I follow any orders they try give me. I'll do it on principle alone.

Good luck with that. Let me know what getting tasered feels like.

Most cops aren't bad people. Most cops DON'T want to pull their gun. Nor do they pull it. But why does it seem like cops like to use civilians for target practice? The media.

People don't care to hear about the mundane things. People want to listen to the bad stories.

The city closest to me has a total of 44 officers. That is including K9 units, FT/PT officers, civilians sworn in to act as officers in some capacity and DEC officers. Excluding the DEC, they cover an area of 4 sq miles and 18k people.

There have been 0 shootings by police as far back as I can find. People have shot at the cops, including one who barricaded himself in and had two hostages. He killed himself after an 18 hour standoff.

People have fought with cops, including a former friend of mine. He stole a car, broke into some homes to steal things, then led cops on a chase when they caught up to him. He crashed his car into a house, got out and started trying to fight them. 0 shots fired.

Cops are taught about "conflict escalation" and often just the appearance of an officer in uniform can bring it down a level. However; coming in already screaming mad to a bad situation only makes things worse. You can easily increase the levels in a conflict. Can't lower them that way.

There's definitely bad cops. There's cops who are good people and make bad decisions. There's good cops who make bad decisions. Any rational person is not in a hurry to possibly kill anyone. Look at the suicide rates on police who have taken a life.

Even if they don't succumb to depression of taking a life, it is often the loss of a career. Many aren't allowed to be officers anymore. All that training, everything they worked for is gone. The stigma is carried with them forever.

The cop in your story may have panicked, but you said the elderly man allegedly shot someone before. He may be old but bullets don't discriminate on who fired them, they'll kill equally. Just because it was in the leg doesn't mean he wouldn't turn around and put one into the cop.

Watch some of the videos of cops being shot. See how fast you can react, even if you know it's coming. From concealed to firing takes about a second. Remember: they have the drop on you
