I used to think threatening to leave the country was a bit silly. But if our government is so dumb as to pass a law that will basically give us ZERO way to protect ourselves from ID theft. I'd finally join those saying that.

Not to mention just completely trampling over our rights. Every single website under the sun could in THEORY show something "offensive". So it's ID use for all of them. Theres no fucking way I am doing that.

I don't even give my SSN for the doctor or any of that shit. You don't fucking need it.

The House version of it made it clear that the restrictions won't be as harsh for smaller websites, but yeah.

It's still extremely dangerous, as sites like Youtube, X, Facebook, etc. will most definitely make you give your ID to access them, but at least smaller sites like this will have more leeway.

Don't know. Senate was suppose to vote on it last month, but it was pushed back there.

but im legit curious as to the possibility of this being a way to prevent unwanted/unsponsored sensationalism surrounding any war-crimes that u.s. and/or isreal potentially have plans for surrounding all this iran drama lately?

i know that may just be a reach as this bill does have some relevance to it even before the Iran stuff started happening, but who knows if theyre trying to keep the youth distanced from alternate info-sources as to not sour them on the idea of later voting for any of the creeps sharing any involvement with any potential government bullshittery. i have to imagine theyve been trying to devise SOMETHING in response to the fact that younger people arent voting these days, even if it isnt something so extreme or dystopian

This is likely also part of the anti-porn push that's been going on recently in several states. Porn is the new scapegoat that comics and video games were in the past, and several states have passed bans and age verification requirements for it, with various sites purging NSFW content as a result.

It's obvious a lot of the Senators who support it, especially Democrats, haven't actually read through it and fell for the lies that the latest revision fixed some of the issues they had with it.

Does KOSA still need to go to the Senate? Cause if so I hope they stop it. I'm a little concerned because Dems can have their heads up their assess when it comes to this "for the children" stuff and side with Republicans on draconian bullshit.

The Senate heard it, but haven't voted on it yet. It's not looking good for the Senate, though, as over 60 Senators have pledged support for it, enough for it to be filibuster proof and pass, and it's expected to pass there. That's why efforts are being made to target the House instead now, as it is less likely to pass there at this point.

And it's political suicide for the Democrats if they DO sign it, considering how the internet is pretty much a necessity at this point and how this would impact younger voters and minority/LGBTQ ones.

There's no way to stop this. You can e-mail your representative a million times they aren't going to no vote a law called the Kids Online Safety Act, it would be political suicide.

It could get struck down for violating First Amendment rights for adults like COPA did.

The FTC and state Attorney Generals enforce it. While on paper it would not apply to sites not based in the US, considering the majority of sites and internet infrastructure is based in the US, it's likely foreign sites would block access to US users unless they give their ID. The wording is so broad that Attorney Generals could nail websites for pretty much anything they consider unacceptable for 16 year olds or younger, hence why they'd have to implement harsh age verification to comply.
