IDK how to feel about that many laws getting voted on in a single day.
Doesn't look like it's been voted on yet, as I don't see it on there and search results come up with nothing.

House made their own bill. As of a few hours ago:

The House version of KOSA takes a tiered approach to regulatory compliance. A high impact online company with at least $2.5 billion in annual revenue or more than 150 million global monthly active users has the most obligations under the bill. A second tier covers online platforms with at least $200 million in revenue or 200,000 users, and a third tier is for smaller platforms that dont meet those user or revenue thresholds.

This tiered approach is similar to the European Unions online safety regulation, the Digital Services Act (DSA), which has additional obligations for the largest online platforms, including risk assessments and transparency measures.

There's more meat to it, but that pullquote is my biggest takeaway.

That's a relief. So there's still time to contact your representatives and inform them about the dangers the bill poses so they vote against it.

It's still extremely dangerous, as sites like Youtube, X, Facebook, etc. will most definitely make you give your ID to access them, but at least smaller sites like this will have more leeway.

I used to think threatening to leave the country was a bit silly. But if our government is so dumb as to pass a law that will basically give us ZERO way to protect ourselves from ID theft. I'd finally join those saying that.

Not to mention just completely trampling over our rights. Every single website under the sun could in THEORY show something "offensive". So it's ID use for all of them. Theres no fucking way I am doing that.

I don't even give my SSN for the doctor or any of that shit. You don't fucking need it.

The House version of it made it clear that the restrictions won't be as harsh for smaller websites, but yeah.

I already dislike the fact some AI will or probably already does known damn near everything we do on the internet. This law would seemingly say "here! we're not even hiding it from you that we're doing this to your privacy!"

Kinda like the Youtube personalized ad thing a few years ago. You go into settings somewhere and can turn it off. But it shows (idk if it still does) all the things it bases your "ads" off of and it was a very creepily accurate description of me. Theres my age, there's all my interests, accurate prediction of of I have kids or young relatives (beyond creepy).

There is a 100% chance this is going to pass due to our current climate.

Also there are people who are pro-KOSA specifically because it hits porn and some of them are willing to give up their own rights to hit porn.
Funny story (to me).

My Father (who doesnt vote, thankfully) was pro-Trump until 2021 or so, and hes still a conservative. I always try and point out the screwed up stuff Republicans are doing, and hes been indifferent or defended it. The part where this gets funny, is that it includes when the first state passed the porn ID law. Nothing wrong at all, he says, and now less kids can access it!

We both live in TX. Texas recently passed a similar law. He was not happy when he found out about it. Now hes looking to get a VPN, which I smugly pointed out to him young people are far more familiar with. I got my VPN after help and insistence from people nearly half my age, because theyre just more tech savvy than my generation.

These laws are insidious and insane, and VPNs will make bank if they pass nationally.

Oh, I agree.

That the House wrote their own version was the update explaining why no one had found a record of a vote on the copy that came from the Senate yet.

Small blessings, I guess.

I don't like that Biden greenlit the bill, particularly if he wants me to believe he isn't totally senile and out of touch. OK then Joe I guess you're just an asshole then.

He's not senile.

But he is as out of touch as any other legislator who knows what a telefax machine is, and probably used it during their tenure.

Every legislator needs a millennial IT guy (or younger) to explain technology and digital security issues in plain language to them. Like, it should be a mandatory staff position in the same way "secretary" is.

It was fun while it lasted.

Capitalism infects and destroys all, eventually. Disappointing to see these developments.

I'm gonna turn into that typical old man with an uncontrolled beard living off the grid eventually.

At least I've seen a few vids here in NC about how viable that can be.

I work in IT and can safely say there isnt much correlation between technical prowess and age. Politics just attracts individuals that can't hold down a job at Walmart.

They snuck the Tiktok ban into a Ukraine aid bill because they knew it would not pass on it's own.

Shit like that should be illegal if it does not pertain to the purpose of the bill.
