i didn't say it was racism. you said "its not only about race"...but in this case, it is about her race. They're upset because the character they grew up with is a different race than what they grew up with. I'm saying that's a dumb reason to be upset.

The key word here is Disney. If it were a different movie studio doing their own version of The Little Mermaid and they cast Halle Bailey, nobody would have had an issue, as its not Disneys The Little Mermaid. Disneys The Little Mermaid has an iconic appearance which should be respected and acknowledged.

no TC! The fictional mermaid who lives underwater is white and that's clearly very important to her character and who she is!

What about just being respectful of the source material? If a character is white, black, Asian, blue, green, or whatever originally then aim to be as accurate as can be with any deviation being an error to be corrected.

If I were to be a casting director, Id try to get the race of the fictional character correct. Black, white, Asian - accuracy would be key.

Nobody is going to look exactly like a cartoon character. And Unless you're equally worried with the specifics of the slope of Ariel's nose bridge, cheek bone height, space between eyes, etc; skin color is hardly an important feature to worry about. But if people were that anal about how much an actor looks like a cartoon character, pretty much every live-action movie based on a cartoon wouldn't exist. Now if somebody is more worried about skin color than say the differences between how Michael Keaton and Christian Bale look as Batman, they're just racist as fuck.

Unless race or demographics play an important role in the source material, there's no reason to worry about what race the actress is.

Cosplayers are able to stay true to a cartoon. But then they have more respect for the source material than Hollywood does.

Why is it these days bad casting doesnt seem to exist and whenever an actor doesnt visually match up to the character they are playing as its thought of as a new modern alternative reimagining?

Flash Thompson doesnt look anything like he should in the new Spider-Man movies either. Marvel nailed it with the Avengers. You cant get an actor closer to comic book Tony Stark than Robert Downey Jr. but then they screwed up the supporting cast of characters from the Spider-Man comics.

Ariels defining trait was her voice not her skin color or hair. The latter have zero implications or effect on the character and story.

You dont hear her voice in pictures. What is her defining visual trait? Forget her personality and story, when you picture Ariel, whats the first thing that comes to mind.

Based on the Disney movie we think of the redhead, but her physical appearance is not at all relevant to the story. Ariel isnt an icon or a set in stone person. She is a character in a cartoon and her race doesnt define her in that cartoon.

Then just keep her how she was. No need to change a race if its not a defining trait.

Would you also say that Sonic the Hedgehog being blue is not a defining trait of his? And if they turned him brown like real hedgehogs, we should just accept it?

Shut up dude. Sure there is nothing wrong with keeping it as is. There is also nothing wrong with changing it. You realize she wasnt always a redhead or described as such right? Disney took liberties and went with their own design the first time. Why are you NOW putting your foot down?

Yes, Disney created their own timeless character designs when adapting folklore and traditional stories to be developed by Disney.

Disneys Alice in Wonderland should always resemble Disneys Alice in Wonderland. Someone else who isnt Disney is free to adapt the original book a different way.

so disney is not allowed to alter there own fucking interpolation of the story

ariel had black hair for 150 years then disney made it red and gave the story a happy ending

hell all of there adaptions change large things yet no problem

but suddenly they cant change there own version of the story

Thats correct, yes. Disneys Ariel the Little Mermaid should always look the same for brand recognition. Its too ingrained in pop culture to be any different.

But say Pixar or whoever did their own Little Mermaid adaptation, then I wouldnt want or expect them to make her look the same as Disneys version.

Disneys Alice in Wonderland should always resemble Disneys Alice in Wonderland. Someone else who isnt Disney is free to adapt the original book a different way. I dont believe Alice was called out as specifically being white in the original book, so another producer could make Alice black if they wanted to. Bro shut the fuck up. Thats a false equivalency and you know it

Changing the appearance of one fictional character is the same as changing the appearance of another fictional character.

If were supposed to be okay with Ariel being played by a black actress, then hypothetically we should also supposed to be okay if Sonic the Hedgehog turned dark brown like a real hedgehog. Seeing as people say a fictional characters defining trait isnt their color palette.

People want an accurate visual representation of how a long-term established character is often depicted as. It doesnt matter what that character originally looked like, people will be upset if any part of the original character design is changed.

I guess you can only activate it as long as she is a Virgin and she must sleep.. next? to the injured individual? That scene was so strange. It seems to imply that they didnt have sex but she was sleep in his bed naked? The reason I assumed she didnt have sex with him was because A. She was super embarrassed when she woke up next to him naked. B. When they explained it, the show made it sound like she still has the ability because she was still a Virgin. The girl is fucking 15.

That shit was weird as fuck and I almost stopped watching it again right then and there.
