It's about the voice, for the Disney movie. I haven't hear the girl sing (I'm calling her girl because I'm much older than her), but it's only about the voice. Anyone in fiction can be played by anyone appropriate for the role, and most fiction describes mannerisms, posture, hair color, eye color, and other non race stuff. Hell, if Anthony fucking Hopkins can be Othello, shut the entire fuck up about a black Ariel. At the time, if they had Whitney do the voice, y'all would still have been mad?

Whitney would have to be digitally altered to resemble a teenage white girl.

Doesnt need to be. If youre remaking an iconic cartoon character as live action they need to resemble the original cartoon character.

Compare the new Final Fantasy VII to the original. The characters have updated appearances without being outright changed entirely. That is the correct way to remake iconic characters.

Back in the day, people complained that Luigi didnt have a moustache in the Mario movie like in the games.

When anything is being remade, there will always be fans playing spot the difference with the new version. And being newer doesnt necessarily mean being better.

Mace Windu is loved by all. John Henry Irons and John Stewart are awesome without having to complete replace Superman or Hal Jordans identity. There is a difference between straight up replacing an existing character and making a new main character in the same universe.

And if the made changes to Windu in future installments I'd be fine with that so long as it doesn't't change the story.

That's the whole point. Ariel's race has no impact on the story whatsoever. The only thing its impacting is people's feelings. And its because she's black.

No because she looked a certain way and now she doesnt.

Youre the one whos saying that people who want her to stay true to the original must hate black people.

If Halle Bailey played a completely new character or the role of an existing black character, those people you call racists would have had nothing to say. Its not about race, its about change.

Black people taking the lead role in movies is a good thing. Casting actors that dont look like the character they are playing as is a bad thing. That goes for other physical attributes too, not just race.

No, people just dont like iconic characters being changed regardless of what that change is to. And that goes for all iconic characters and all types of visual change. Changing a characters iconic costume to something completely new and different is also an unwanted change.

James Bond and the Doctor from Doctor Who get a pass though since its become an established rule in those series that the actors dont have to adhere to one specific appearance.

Whether its cosplay or movies, I judge live action adaptations of a cartoon character to be how accurate they are. Costume, hair style, weight, height and yes, even skin tone. If youre playing the role of a character then get it right. Dont half ass it. Dont put your own personal twist on it.

Look at the backlash to Sonic the Hedgehog - keeping Sonic blue is the only thing they did right. People complained that he didnt look the way he should and theyre changing it.

I dont like it when Hollywood drastically changes the appearance of an existing character from another medium. I dont like struggling to recognise a character that I know so well.

Several actors have played Batman but the Batman suit has always been recognisable, and Bruce Wayne is almost always recognisable as being Bruce Wayne whoever plays him.

In the first X-Men movie, the question is asked would you prefer yellow spandex, and Im thinking yes. This is an X-Men movie after all.

Brand recognition.

Robert Downey Jr is recognisable as being Tony Stark from the comics. You dont need to be told that hes Tony Stark, you just know by looking at him. Thats good casting.

Having to be told who a well known popular character is just by looking at the actor playing them and not having any sense of recognisability by their appearance is bad casting.

Completely changing an established characters appearance is bad casting.

You cant cast anyone as anyone and expect it to work.

My point is that there are countless physical attributes, and skin color is not inherently more important than any of them. I don't know enough about Batman to know if race plays a major role in his universe and thusly shaped who he is, but I know damn well skin color is no more important in the Little Mermaid universe than the difference between Keaton and Kilmer's chin height is in the Batman universe.

Cant a white character just be white and stay white without it having to be an important defining aspect about themselves?
