And some combination of single-payer and universal healthcare is the norm across Western Europe: to claim it's impossible or impractical is a bit much. These things don't just fall fully-formed from some policy think-tank, after all. 1) the only country that has a national insurance model comparable to medicare for all is Canada; most of western europe uses either the beveridge or bismarck models. The latter looks remarkably like the ACA, with several caveats of course 2) is it popular? It is sort-of popular among dems, btu it's not as popular as plenty of policies that never pass (immigration reform, gun control laws) http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2017/06/23/public-support-for-single-payer-health-coverage-grows-driven-by-democrats/ 3) single-payer would be useful for containing the growth in prices, but we're not going to magically negotiate prices that are like 60% of the current remuneration physicians and hospitals currently get.
