you won't be paying a 25% rate at $9.50/hour lol. Not unless you work 80 hours/week.

25% probably isn't that far off. Your income tax is only gonna be like 3% or something, but payroll and medicare taxes already get you more than halfway to 25

12.5% and 25% is "that far off," assuming that's even a correct estimate. And he won't be paying anything in federal tax and probably nothing in state tax.

Combined payroll taxes are over 15%

Unless you have minor dependents, tax credits won't make up for your tax burden.

Even in California you need to pay state income taxes on 19k in income.

I doubt state EITCs make up for it either

My question with that, then, is if they would work with companies that offer internships to flex their requirements to attract a larger population of high school students to accommodate this change.

I don't really understand what you mean, or exactly how its supposed to relate.

Like, the easiest way to accommodate more interns is to pay them less. What do you imagine the city or school district could do to "work with" companies in order to make them offer more jobs?

This is most likely a case of "not my job." I mean... who in a school administration would actually be tasked with tracking the demographics of the town and projecting out to determine if and when they would lose minority status?

well, I live in the South, specifically Little Rock, which took the federal government and the national guard to integrate lol

so basically everyone around here pays a lot of attention to this kind of thing

Substitute the graduating class for the maximum student class size feasible from the pool of incoming student applications, and remove students until you return the threshold for qualifying for the PHBAO grant, and then send acceptance letters after that. This is operating on the assumption that they can't discriminate which students to drop, so they'll have to randomly assign numbers or by order of application submitted, and then keep dropping a student from the max number.

idk how it works, I think it is a little harder than that, but it's definitely feasible in a school district like L.A. for someone to keep track of this even if it's at the district level and not the school level

I can see how it would slip through the cracks though

maybe now the right will care about school funding

This article just makes the argument for why the public school system is complete shit. The charter system would prevent this type of institutional racism, so I expect folks on the left will be championing it now.

It was an order from the court forcing integration that caused these minority schools to receive extra funding

A charter system would have avoided this by not needing to desegregate in the first place, because charters generally don't need to follow the regulations public schools do.

So do you have a problem with forced desegregation, the compromise the LA school district made due to an inability to sufficiently integrate, or both?

seems more like it's an old rule that they're looking into changing

That's exactly what it is but the usual posters conveniently ignored this because it goes against their narrative

I mean, some people are looking to change it.

From what I can tell, the issue isn't so much that the rule is old as it is very rare for a school that is more than 70% minority to become more white over time in Los Angeles lol

http://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED246141.pdf

Basically, the existence of PHBAO programs was court ordered in response to the forced desegregation of schools. LA seems to have had some problems integrating sufficiently, so they reached an agreement wherein schools that were insufficiently integrated (the 70+% minority bar) instead had to receive some additional support, because separate isn't necessarily equal remember.

The fact that we haven't heard about this prior to now tells me either that racial rhetoric really is heating up in this country or, more likely, supermajority minority communities in L.A. have never been gentrified enough until now to face this problem. I'm betting on the latter but it's hard to tell without going through the history of LA between 1981 and now and I'm not doing that

so is it the neighborhood got gentrified by rich tech white families making the school surge in white students and now the school loses funding?

hahaha

Why should privileged kids deserve as much funding as underprivileged? Tell me that, white boy.

I know this is satire but there are people who actually think like this.

I don't really get the issue

doing it based on minority status is arguably racist, but poor schools should get more money from the state than rich schools. rich schools have more of a local tax base from which to draw funds.

or you could argue that we shouldn't fund school districts, but just students directly. even then, shouldn't vouchers be progressive so poor students have a shot at better private schools?
