You know what CotM added? A fucking run button.

And it was fucking terrible. You moved about as fast when running as you did in the other metroidvanias, but you had to double tap forward or move slower than fuck.

This is not even remotely true. Just look up gameplay videos on Youtube if you need a side-by-side comparison.

Hey the articles are good sometimes!

They really aren't. If you've ever actually seen them, you'd realize that Playboy is the Douchey magazine made for and by Douchey Douches.

Beyond that? Aria took all of the improvements that Circle made to SotN's formula and threw them out the window, so that was that.

Only you could be this wrong.

First off, Alucard moved like he had two pot roasts strapped to his feet. Sure, his movement speed was acceptable as long as you were willing to resort to speed tech and didn't mind listening to "HUNHHUNHHUNHHUNHHUNHHUNHHUNHHUNHHUNHHUNHHUNH!" wherever you went. You know what CotM added? A fucking run button. And it made you wait JUST long enough to activate it to make you say, "Dick me right in the fuck, this game needs a Goddamn run button." Skip forward to Aria of Sorrow and we're back to the backdashing shit.

Circle of the Moon realized that Castlevania doesn't need a shop system. It's clunky and awkward and it's really best just to rely on a combination of random drops and hidden items. Aria should have expanded on this further by taking the card equivalents and making THOSE the hidden items so you didn't have to spend ages farming for necessities; instead it just ends up hiding completely useless items and consumables instead of permanent upgrades. Terrible, terrible idea.

The souls system was at least conceptually good, but the execution was fucking terrible. Aria is basically a case study on how - and why - not to integrate combat abilities and those which serve only to allow access to more areas. In the Circle of the Moon, this was done elegantly, with new abilities becoming part of your basic movement set and the card system relegated specifically to combat bonuses. And at the very least in SotN this offense was limited to a handful of equipment which allowed access to the game's better ending - in Aria, it's rampant.

Also the music in Aria was shit. Circle had an opening theme ripped straight from Capcom's playbook followed by a soundtrack that was mostly remixes of CV3 tunes. Not the most original OST, but that sweet bassline in its version of Sinking Old Sanctuary was more than worth the price of admission.

There's probably more. This is just off the top of my head.

Any beyond that? I must admit Circle is still rather bare-bones when it comes to story.

And the DS is one of those newfangled "modern" systems, so I never really got too much into it.

Nobody plays Castlevania for the story, not even the first time.

The story should definitely not be the sole reason to play any game, but is a part of it. Usually the combination of good presentation and gameplay is what makes a game enjoyable.

Castlevania has never had anything more than an excuse plot.

If you let Shadow die at the Floating Continent, Relm is there instead. The code does not branch to different dialogue for each event, and Woolsey was never told because competent translations didn't exist until the late 90's.

I found out a band called Amaranthe not too long ago... probably one of the most unique and widely-appealing metal bands I've ever heard, honestly. Their big gimmick is that they have three vocalists and their sound is what I have described - to their faces - as a "metal burrito with pop filling".

Also, one of their singers is a babe:

Vanish + Doom is "bad"?

Um... yes?

More accurately, it's a bug. The code does not handle death as a status very well, and it requires a specific override to respect enemy immunity to it. Unfortunately, certain functions will bypass even this override, resulting in the Vanish/Doom bug. A much lesser-known example would be enemies with "special" attacks that set the death status (i.e. the ChaosDrgn in vanilla), which also fail to respect death immunity. The fact that such attacks are very uncommon AND never appear in a rage leads me to believe that Squaresoft was at least partially aware of this problem, but that's just speculation.

FF6 is literally one of the worst in the series. only 1 2 3 are worse.

shut the fuck up

Ah, such well-stated points. Truly, you two are the great philosophers of your time.

FF6 was a very poorly-designed game, yes. Squaresoft is very good at coming up with ideas, but they kind of drop the ball with implementation. They're more focused on meeting their gimmick quota than 2actually refining any concept they shit into existence.

Microsoft has the same problem. Must have something to do with the name.

It doesn't add new content and we really don't bill it as a difficulty hack - it takes the core ideas that FF6 initially presented and works with them in a way that the original game didn't. The huge cast was originally offset by the fact that it was entirely homogeneous - here, there's a lot more diversity, with characters like Cyan being able to be built as a brick wall or a physical powerhouse, where someone like Relm is more of a speedy healer/nuker.

As for BNW itself, I'm far enough into the development of 1.10 that I'd suggest waiting for it if you really only want to give it one pass, but 1.9 has been stable and well-tread for nearly a year now.

Been posting too much serious shit lately, so I figured now was a better time than ever to do a follow-up article I wrote about being a modder, this one specifically talking about game development as a whole.

For anyone with any interest in the field, I'm hoping this can be somehow helpful.
