Nah, you're making it too hard. Buff defense, agility, then power. Then just defend/heal and wait for an opening. Water rune should be sufficient for that.

Yeah, you can't skimp on that. Agility is tied to accuracy AND evasion, and the extra turn you get when you manage to dodge an attack is the exact opening you need to strike.

I'm not actually sure on this. On my current playthrough when I was trying to get the Sky Rune I had a couple problems with the apprentice and one of them was trying to get him/her to appear but once the apprentice did appear it was(drum roll)...Valsu which was very bad news for me. They're were 2 reasons for this(1)I was using Olvan(2)he was at level 27 which was a nightmare for Olvan. The only strategy I could use against Valsu was to power up Olvan, defend then attack and heal and hope I could get in a second strike. If my level had been any higher than 27 then Valsu would be unbeatable.

Were you also buffing Olvan's agility?

While they technically level up with you, they actually grow far more powerful, much faster. The game was tweaked for the US release to make it much more difficult. The result is that you get reduced improvements upon leveling up, while the other adventurers continue as normal. So the NPCs you have to fight become powerful so fast that there's a point where you cannot win.

This gets brought up a lot. It's the one bug that everybody knows about (and will cite at any given opportunity as the main reason this game is so hard). What most people *don't* know is that it's nonexistent prior to level 10 and very minor prior to level 20. Battles with the other apprentices just boil down to killing them in a single hit 90% of the time, and a good player will be in Barluca *long* before the stat bug really starts to show its true colors.

Oh, The Guardian Legend... good call.

So, the shortest possible answer is that it beats out dedicated shmups because it's much more than a shmup. It combines a shmup with a top-down explorer in a similar vein to the Legend of Zelda and is most frequently compared to Blaster Master which was a very similar hybrid of two genres (replacing the shmup portion with a platformer). There's also the fact that you play as a six foot bitch dressed as a stripper with a gun and a lightsaber who can transform into a spaceship and there's no part of that premise that isn't totally awesome.

But that alone really doesn't explain why it consistently tops pretty much any "Hidden NES gems" list out there. If it were just a standard shmup (or even a standard top-down game), then it would have fallen pretty flat. What really sells it is how well it blends the two genres into a cohesive whole - the subweapon upgrades you get from the main exploratory portion of the game are the X-factor here. the provide the primary incentive to explore beyond just getting from point A to point B, and from a developer's perspective I found them all to be at least somewhat interesting and mostly well-balanced. Also from a developer's perspective, the game was technically light years ahead of its time: a bullet hell game on a system that could not *do* bullet hell. That the game didn't just cause your NES to burst into flames was perhaps its greatest achievement.

Finally, one last factor that I believe contributes to its enduring legacy is just how well-suited it is for modding and randomization. Randomizers are big things these days, but so many of them exist for games where they just make no sense existing (Final Fantasy VI being a primary example). Randomizers are best suited to a game like the Legend of Zelda or TGL where what you will end up with will be a fun new experience and not just a damned mess, and I think the framework that TGL provides modern developers to work with is amongst the best that the NES days have to offer.

The problem with anything related to Finland is, iirc, that they teach much closer to the tests used for international standards. Effectively it's teaching to the test on a higher level. And, while standardized tests are often criticized, arbitrary standards meant that students could graduate with honors in some districts yet be fundamentally deficient.

And the problem with us is that we are using an education system that's about 150 years out of date, are effectively teaching children to hate learning, and we think that schools (just like fucking everything else) are just a way to try and make money.
