Topic | How do you feel about affirmative action ending? |
Atralis 08/15/23 12:53:32 AM #9 | NoxObscuras posted... That's what they used to justify it in court, yeah. But I've seen a lot of people on social media talk about how unfair it was for white people getting passed up for opportunities. A lot of that was littered with racism though. The increasing number of Asian students and the decreasing number of white students has changed perceptions of fairness regarding affirmative action. Affirmative action throughout most of its history has involved white people discriminating in favor of certain minorities by raising their chances of admissions to schools even if that means lowering the odds of admission for white students. But its just different if the people that are controlling the levers of power are lowering the odds of groups other than their own. Do non Asian groups have the right to lower the odds of admission for Asian students in order to achieve some balance? How much? How can you argue it isn't racial discrimination if people from a racial minority are having their odds of admission slashed for no other reason than that they are lumped into "Asians"? |

Atralis 08/14/23 11:29:29 PM #5 | Solar_Crimson posted... Hypocritical because the reason they attacked it is solely to curb Black people from going to college. There was not a peep about legacy admissions and upper-class nepotism that makes up a far greater degree of students in those Ivy League schools. Legacy admissions are in the crosshairs now that race based affirmative action has been banned but the Supreme Court itself didn't have the ability to ban legacy admissions because "legacy" isn't a protected class under the constitution. Legacy admissions helped specific white students have higher chances of getting into these universities but the practice was particularly damaging to white students that weren't legacies under affirmative action and the data bears that out. White and Asian non legacy students made up a majority of qualified applicants to these schools and also had no thumb on the scale for them in a system where an absolute majority of students did. |
Topic | How do you feel about affirmative action ending? |
Atralis 08/14/23 11:01:46 PM #3 | One thing that stood out to me in regards to the discussion around it ending was how within even my lifetime race based affirmative action had gone from being seen as something that was a temporary measure until underprivileged groups caught up to being seen as something that would be needed forever. A lot of the hopefulness that led people to imagine that affirmative action would lead to a future where affirmative action wouldn't be needed died before the practice itself did. |

Atralis 08/14/23 9:25:02 PM #57 | creativeme posted... i beat it a few months ago. it was fine but people hyped it up WAYYYY too much that first month. don't think anyone i know that was overhyping it even finished it. did get repetitive and majority of the collectibles don't even give anything worthwhile. plus kinda have too many spells and it's annoying having to switch them up to use what you need. you can't even hotkey all of them with your 4 load outs so you still have to switch them out for some stuff. I realized I was getting super burned out on the game when I was trying to scratch my completionist itch so I stopped doing all the activities that I seemed like busy work (merlin trials, collectible hunting) and only did the content I found interesting like the main sidequests for your friends from each of the houses and the stuff to set up your room of requirement and populate your little environments with magical creatures. |

Atralis 08/11/23 7:25:40 PM #16 | Foppe posted... I mean, the British and USA shares history, why would they not have made at least one movie about it? That isn't exclusive to the British. A lot of countries had extensive emigration to the Americas. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_emigration_to_the_United_States Emigration rose again at the turn of the 20th century, reaching a new peak of about 35,000 Swedes in 1903. Figures remained high until World War I, alarming both conservative Swedes, who saw emigration as a challenge to national solidarity, and liberals, who feared the disappearance of the labor force necessary for economic development. One-fourth of all Swedes had made the United States their home. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Emigrants_(film)#:~:text=The%20Emigrants%20won%20international%20acclaim,for%20Best%20Foreign%20Language%20Film. We don't think about Sweden specifically being a big source of immigrants to the US but it was a huge deal to them to have a large portion of their population leave for here and it actually did spur them to change their government policies to make it more attractive to stay. |

Topic | Think Mandela Effects are parallel universe's crossover to ours? |
Atralis 08/09/23 8:02:35 PM #22 | I think it comes from people having a tendency to misremember things in similar ways. Think about Mandela. He peaked in the consciousness of most Americans in the 80's when he was in prison so in the minds of someone that doesn't really follow the world news or politics that's where he remained. The same people that believe that Nelson Mandela died in prison in the 80's also can't tell you when the Berlin wall fell, or what the Berlin wall was, or what the cold war was about. Hell they can't tell you much about anything related to history. But they are sure about this thing. Its nonsense. |

Watch a video on D&D battle mechanics. Get a Barbarian with high strength and have a cleric cast "Bless", you'll hit almost everything in the early game. I get that it's supposed to emulate d&d but that doesn't change the fact that it's awful. It's clunky, frustrating, boring, and once it's over you have to recharge back in camp before you can do it again. It can't remember an rpg I've played with worse combat than this. Atralis 08/06/23 2:24:19 PM #76 | pojr posted... I know someone who was a computer science major, but they could not pass pre-calc to save their life. The person took it twice and failed both times. They ended up switching their major to something similar so that the math prerequisites were more lenient. My school (Boulder) introduced a BA in CS for people that felt blocked by the STEM requirements in the College of Engineering. This happened while I was most of the way through my BS in CS and I had mixed feelings but after actually graduating and working as a developer for 7 years I've seen first hand that Calc isn't required for the vast majority of jobs people are going to be getting with their Computer Science major. The pass rate for the first couple of Computer Science major courses were low enough on their own to weed a lot of people out of the major but if you are put off by those classes then you really shouldn't be majoring in Comp Sci. But having Freshman and sophmores go through the gauntlet of taking high level science classes along with Calc 1&2 felt like gatekeeping in reflection. |

Topic | "Neurodivergent" has been watered down to a worthless term.. |
Atralis 08/04/23 5:51:51 PM #191 | I do think that there is a growing tendency to treat people that were once considered well within the spectrum of being normal as if they are disabled. People that would have been considered shy or reserved are now "on the spectrum". This becomes a problem when people limit themselves because of a barrier that they've built up in their own mind. I no lifed World of Warcraft for 2 years after high school rarely speaking to anyone outside my immediate family. A lot of the time I felt ashamed, depressed, hopeless, because I didn't see a path to move forward in my life. I joined the Army and went into a very nerdy MOS (your specialty) and I used that as my path forward. I went to college after 4 years doing that and I got a job as a software engineer. I still see a path that my life could have gone that would have had me still in my parents basement. |

Atralis 07/29/23 11:00:25 AM #150 | If the thief shot the guy then obviously its self defense. In Colorado we had a couple of cases in the past year that were over a similar issue with different outcomes. https://denvergazette.com/news/crime/aurora-man-arrested-after-teen-fatally-shot-trying-to-steal-car/article_23e4f642-1c44-11ee-9bb4-cf35bad9cc88.html In one case a car owner had a tracker in the car and then went out and found the people driving his stolen vehicle. A gun fight started between the car owner and the people in the stolen car and one of the thieves was killed. There were no charges because it was self defense. In another instance a car owner caught two teens trying to steal his Hyundai and chased them as they tried to flee the scene (in another stolen car apparently). He shot them both and one of them died. He was charged with murder. You have a right to pursue someone that has stolen your property. If they fight you to prevent you from getting your property back you have a right to self defense. But you can't hunt down and shoot someone that is just trying to run away from you. |
