I would say that the fact games against the AI are so much more open makes it a more enjoyable experience. You spend less time chasing the ball aimlessly, more time on the ball or actually defending a threat.

Is lack of defense (rather the emphasis on offense) as big as a difference as I heard for PvP from 17? Is it too easy to score?

I haven't played against other humans yet, but the shift against the AI is really huge. CBs back off a lot, and the wide defenders take some really aggressive and dumb angles to the ball.

Like, playing against the AI in 16 or 17, they'd basically play keepaway in their own half, keeping possession kinda aimlessly, and you had to really try to break them down when you finally got the ball. The AI is so much more aggressive in 18 (even when it kinda shouldn't be). Instead of 1-0 games with five total shots, I'm playing 3-2, 4-3, with each side having like 12 shots.

TopicStudy: fewer pregnancies, more fetal deaths due to Flint's water crisis
Antifar
09/21/17 8:32:12 PM
#1
http://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/flint-water-crisis/2017/09/20/flint-water-crisis-pregnancies/686138001/

The city of Flint saw fewer pregnancies, and a higher number of fetal deaths, during the period women and their fetuses were exposed to high levels of lead in their drinking water, according to a new research study that reviewed health records from Flint and the state.

Fertility rates decreased by 12% among Flint women, and fetal death rates increased by 58%, after April 2014, according to research by assistant professors and health economists David Slusky at Kansas University and Daniel Grossman at West Virginia University. The pair examined vital statistics data for Flint and the rest of the state of Michigan from 2008 to 2015, zoomed down to the census-tract level.

That post-April 2014 time period is significant, because that's when — in an effort to save money — the city of Flint switched from water supplied by the city of Detroit to using the Flint River as a drinking water source, without adding needed anti-corrosives to the water. Lead levels in drinking water supplies spiked as a result.

The problem, however, wasn't acknowledged by Gov. Rick Snyder and state health and environmental officials until late September 2015 — months after Virginia Tech researcher Marc Edwards and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency manager Miguel Del Toral alerted state and federal officials of their concerns, and weeks after Flint pediatrician Mona Hanna-Attisha's own research showed children's lead blood levels were rising in Flint.

According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, lead can damage a developing baby's nervous system, causing miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as infertility in men and women. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, some women used lead pills to terminate pregnancies.

Additionally, state health officials confirmed 91 cases, including 12 deaths, from Legionnaire's Disease, a respiratory infection, in Genesee County in a 17-month period in 2014-15. Though not conclusively tied to the Flint water crisis, cases spiked after the city switched its water source.

Flint has since switched back to Great Lakes Water Authority-supplied water.
...
"We weren’t particularly surprised by this, but we didn’t expect it be as clean and clear as it was."

The researchers looked at the number of women of child-bearing age in Flint and other large Michigan cities, and the number of live births, to calculate a birth rate for each city. Comparing Flint to other large Michigan cities helped mitigate for other factors that might affect birth rates, such as couples holding off on having children after the economic recession beginning in fall 2008, Slusky said.

Researchers also attempted to account for concerns by Flint residents about their city's water quality, and whether that led to any decision to wait on children. The researchers examined Google data for searches from Flint on "lead" and "lead poisoning," but found no increases in such searches until September 2015.

"During most of our time period, when the city and state officials were saying there was no problem, we didn't see any evidence of knowledge about lead in the water," Slusky said.

American Time Use Survey results showed Flint residents did not report any less sexual activity during the time period, he said.

"Either Flint residents were unable to conceive children, or women were having more miscarriages during this time," Slusky said.

http://www.cnn.com/2017/09/21/politics/kfile-roy-moore-homosexuality-illegal/index.html
Roy Moore, a Republican US Senate candidate in Alabama, said in a 2005 interview that he believes "homosexual conduct" should be illegal.

Moore, a hardline conservative Christian and former chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, made the comments in an interview with liberal commentator Bill Press on C-SPAN2's After Words. Moore appeared on the show to publicize a book he had just written about his expulsion from the court for refusing to take down a monument to the Ten Commandments.

During the interview Press asked Moore if he believed homosexual conduct should still be illegal after the 2003 landmark Supreme Court decision in Lawrence v. Texas that struck down a state law banning sodomy, rendering similar laws across the country unconstitutional.

"What I think is that it was illegal under the law, that the Supreme Court usurped the role of the legislature and ruled something about our moral law that is improper, and that's what we're finding the Supreme Court and the federal district courts are doing daily," Moore responded. "They've usurped the moral prerogative, now, if you want--"

Press cut in, saying, "I don't understand your answer. I think it's a yes or no. Do you think that homosexual--homosexuality, or homosexual conduct should be illegal today? That's a yes or no question."

"Homosexual conduct should be illegal, yes," Moore answered.

While Moore has long said he opposed the Supreme Court's 2003 decision, his response to Press's question is the most explicit answer he has given in public on his beliefs regarding the legality of sexual conduct between gay adults.

A phone call to Moore wasn't returned. A spokesperson for Moore's campaign, Noel Fritsch said he wouldn't answer CNN's questions about Moore's current position.

Moore made similar comments in a 2015 video posted on YouTube by user Lone Star Q. In the video, Moore was asked, "Do you still think that homosexuality should be illegal?"

"I think homosexuality should be illegal," Moore said. "Sodomy was declared illegal by the United States Supreme Court in 1987, it said there was no right under the constitution to enlarge the fundamental rights of homosexuals."

"But then they came back and overturned it," the interviewer said.

"Well surely they overturned it. They didn't go by their own precedent, did they?" Moore said.

Moore has been a staunch opponent of LGBT rights throughout his career. Last September he was suspended from Alabama's Supreme Court for failing to comply with the Federal Supreme Court's ruling that legalized gay marriage nationwide. In 2014, Moore wrote letters to all 50 state governors calling on them to convene a constitutional convention to ban gay marriage.

CNN has also reported that Moore repeatedly appeared on a radio show hosted by a pastor who preaches the death penalty for homosexuality.

Later in the interview, when Press asked why the government should ban what consenting adults do in the privacy of their own homes, Moore compared gay sex to bestiality.

Moore received 39% of the vote in the GOP primary, the most of any candidate, advancing to a runoff. This is what Alabama Republicans want.

A mere $62.6 billion dollars!

According to new Department of Education data, that's how much tuition public colleges collected from undergraduates in 2012 across the entire United States. And I'm not being facetious with the word mere, either. The New America Foundation says that the federal government spent a whole $69 billion in 2013 on its hodgepodge of financial aid programs, such as Pell Grants for low-income students, tax breaks, work study funding. And that doesn't even include loans

I've also seen the figure $47 billion floating around, but not sure where that comes from.

In a call with Iowa reporters Wednesday, Sen. Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa) said he could cite “10 reasons this bill shouldn’t be considered” on policy merits alone. On top of that, McConnell is still short of the votes to approve the proposal — “and I don’t see those other one or two votes coming,” Grassley said.

Why consider a bill that is bad on policy and won’t pass?

“Republicans campaigned on this so often that you have a responsibility to carry out what you said in the campaign,” Grassley said.

Tillis and Grassley are part of an outspoken majority in the GOP caucus who want to go full-speed ahead, consequences be damned.

Among Republicans.
https://theintercept.com/2017/09/21/free-college-tuition-republicans-bernie-sanders/

BERNIE SANDERS’S PLAN to make tuition free at all public colleges and universities is becoming a mainstream position in the Democratic Party.

But the plan has appeal far beyond the Democratic faithful.

A Morning Consult poll conducted in mid-September finds that a plurality of self-identified Republicans now agree with a “proposal to make four-year public colleges and universities tuition-free,” as the question is worded.

Forty-seven percent of Republican respondents say they strongly or somewhat support the proposal, while 45 percent say they strongly or somewhat oppose it. Seven percent say they don’t know or have no opinion.

Among self-identified tea party backers, support is also strong — with 50 percent saying they support the proposal while 49 percent oppose it.

Overall, 63 percent of Americans support the proposal, while 29 percent oppose it.

Congress, meanwhile, has no problem spending the kind of money it would take to make the proposal a reality. Earlier this week, the Senate approved a military policy bill that included an increase in funding for the military so large that it alone could fund free college.

Commenting on the poll, the right-wing website HotAir laments the possibility that our incumbent president may learn how popular social democratic policy is: “A lot of Republicans want their free shit too. God forbid Trump figures that out.”

The poll also shows support for a number of cutting-edge social spending proposals. For instance, 43 percent of Americans said they support a universal basic income, versus 39 percent who are opposed.
