There was just no scenario where the Reapers becoming a force of good worked. Controlling them was unbelievable, convincing them not to reap everyone was unbelievable. Yeah, people can say being able to destroy the Reapers wasn't believable but they actually set up some plausible explanations before they threw it all away for a deus ex machina thing.
