I don't think fighting wandering mercenaries really does anything besides stun the world map mob. Not sure what happens if you lose, I never did. But I realized you can mostly just avoid those guys by staying out of line of sight, hiding behind trees, and holding B to run and zoom past, so I basically explored everywhere I could before hitting dead ends so I could collect all the foraging spots before doing any actual battles so they'd refresh.

But they haven't refreshed after doing like four battles!

if you manage to actually kill the wandering units (instead of just doing more damage, and stunning them), you get some honor.

I think it's kind of both? I assume that it's the first chapter of the game, but there's also a hard time limit. Though I think the countdown pauses when the menus are open.

I've started into Paranormasight. Finished chapter 1... I assume based on achievement completion I'm about a third through the game?

It's a lot simpler than I was expecting.

They're all worth playing.

Vagrant Story is probably the shortest (like 10-15 hours), and Xenogears is the longest (probably 50-60+).

I'd say start out with Vagrant Story and Chrono Cross since they're a bit polarizing and VS is mechanically pretty different from the majority of rpgs.

And XG is the case of it being an interesting mess due to the scope and ambition of the game, since it's not well paced at all and a lot of things about the gameplay itself are half baked.

The other games are pretty standard fare and are pretty safe bets to give you what you're looking for if that's what you want.

visual novels aren't an actual thing though.

Japanese people just lump them all into the adventure genre, regardless of how much or how little gameplay elements they have.
'
'visual novel' is just a marketing trademark/advertisement slogan (based on other games billing themselves as 'sound novels' like a lot of early nes games or Higurashi), like how MGS is 'tactical espionage action' or Tales games claim to be really goofy chuuni genres like 'finding the meaning of birth rpg' or 'justice rpg'.

I was stuck on the first boss as the archer for like an hour and a half, despite using most of the resources I got to upgrade her.

then I switched to the knight and beat it on my first try despite not upgrading him at all lol.

(IDK if I'd stick with it though)
