Magical Delicacy (Xbox Game Pass)

man I don't even know what to say about this one. It has mixed reviews on Steam and I can say why. It's one part cooking game and one part Metroidvania, but secretly it's actually a puzzle game, and the primary way you interact with all of it is by doing fetch quests. Basically you'll get increasingly specific/difficult cooking orders from people and have to figure out how to make them without much guidance -- you have recipes, but you typically won't have a recipe for exactly what someone wants. But you also can't really improvise the way you could in an actual kitchen. It's a very game-y kind of cooking and I think they might have been better served making it all about potions and poultices and stuff; the veneer of cooking leads you to think things will work differently from how they actually do. The way you slowly gain knowledge about how the cooking system works feels slightly detective game-y but don't expect the polish of Obra Dinn or Strange Horticulture.

The game also wastes your time, a lot. I recommend turning off QTEs and hold-to-confirm because they're needless, but even without that stuff there isn't much respect for the player's time. Cooking takes time, you have to wait for night or day to complete certain tasks, and you're expected to do a lot of trial and error cooking, which wastes ingredients and forces you to tediously go back out and buy/scrounge for more. Just like when a game has breakable weapons, I suspect "waste ingredients as a primary game mechanic" is a mechanic that is inherently polarizing and will, by itself, turn a lot of people off.

Despite all that, I like this game. I 100%'d it in about 20h which seems very, very fast compared to most playtimes I've seen so far, and I still think it could have been about 5h shorter with some quality of life changes. My closest comparison is actually Greak: Memories of Azur, which is another metroidvania where you spend most of the game making preparations for a final journey rather than trying to find and kill a bad guy. But obviously the games play very differently, since this game doesn't have any combat and few environmental puzzles. I think I'd be upset if I had paid full price for this game, but it's the perfect kind of thing to check out on Game Pass.

GoldenEye 007 (Xbox Game Pass)

So there's the whole debate/consensus about how Goldeneye used to be amazing but is now showing its age, right? I think when most people talk about that, they're talking about the multiplayer. And like, sure, there's slow-down and stuff, and I'd argue that you'd have to not have been paying attention to not notice that back in the 90s, but I get the argument for sure. But the campaign? The campaign really hasn't aged at all, because hot take, it was never very good.

You might be thinking "everyone loves the Goldeneye campaign!" and yes I thought that too. But I think most people who love the Goldeneye campaign love Dam and Runway and Surface 1 and Bunker 1 and maybe Facility (except the fucked NPCs), and maybe they like Frigate, and then the game is kinda shit from there. Does anyone like Statue or Archives or Bunker 2 or Caverns? I know no one likes Control. Does anyone even remember Depot? I must've played every level in this game a hundred times as a kid (with level select) and I got to Depot here and went "I have never seen this level before in my life."

It's just like. It's not good. There's no enemy variety, no real bosses, the NPCs are notoriously fucked, almost no weapon selection in most levels so you'll just use whatever automatic you're given. The difficulty system is fucked. Most of the mission objectives aren't fun and often aren't explained well. You get to drive a tank through the streets of St. Petersburg and it still isn't fun. Most levels will constantly spawn enemies out of nowhere, which works okay for a level like Surface and makes a lot less sense for Train or Cradle. The levels felt detailed as a kid but they feel very small and empty as an adult. The gunplay isn't fun; using an Xbox One controller with a modern control scheme helps but it's not a miracle worker.

In any case, I never beat the game as a kid and none of my friends as a kid did either, which I think is telling. It feels great to finally have it under my belt, even if I only beat it on the medium difficulty. I don't think I'm ever going to finish my N64 backlog (because no way I beat the Pokmon Stadiums or Hey You, Pikachu or Castlevania 64) but it's nice to chip away at it.

The arrest makes sense if they were making noise or throwing stuff from the gallery down towards congress--this is pretty standard in congressional buildings even at the state house level. You can sit in the gallery as long as you don't make noise or throw things.

Good for them, hope they get everything they want. Ideally we'd get an actual federal law in place to protect people from AI (at least things like getting their likeness stolen) but I'm not holding my breath.
