The Hershey Company on Tuesday confirmed media reports it is raising candy prices as it battles rising cocoa costs.

The price change will be a "low double-digit increase" and affect products across the company's confection portfolio, according to a Hershey spokesperson. Founded in 1894, the Pennsylvania-based company owns over 90 brands including Hershey Kisses, KitKat, Reese's and York.

"This change is not related to tariffs or trade policies," the spokesperson said in a statement to CBS News. "It reflects the reality of rising ingredient costs including the unprecedented cost of cocoa."

Price increases typically take around 90 days to take effect, although the timeframe varies by retailer, the spokesperson added.

Global cocoa shortage

Cocoa prices have skyrocketed in recent years due to a global cocoa shortage. The cost for the commodity was $8,402 in June, a 73% increase from five years ago, according to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, which tracks food prices.

The majority of the world's cocoa supply comes from Ghana and the Ivory Coast, which have faced heatwaves and heavy rain linked to climate change. These unfavorable weather conditions have led to diseases like Black pod rot, which kills cocoa crops. Chronic underinvestment in cocoa farms is another reason behind the spike in cocoa prices, according to an article from J.P. Morgan Global Research.

"Cocoa is a market where the grower produces a very high-value good but receives a very low share of the actual value chain. As a result, replanting rates of diseased trees are low and West African yields have been more subject to weather impacts," Tracey Allen, an agricultural commodities strategist at J.P. Morgan, said in the article.

In a May earnings call, Michele Buck, president of The Hershey Company, said the candy company would lean into products that are "less Cocoa intensive" as it navigates the inflation of cocoa prices. This is part of the company's vision to become a "snacking powerhouse" Buck said.

"We love our chocolate business and we want to continue to grow that," Buck said. "But we also know that if we get into white spaces like sweets, better-for-you and salty, it adds incremental consumers and occasions," she added.

Hershey share prices were up 2.8% after the closing bell on Tuesday.

If there's one thing Ready at Dawn co-founder Ru Weerasuriya wishes he could've done differently with The Order: 1886, it's getting more development time for the PS4 exclusive. He revealed in a new interview that the studio cut roughly 30% of the game to hit the game's release date in February 2015.

Speaking with The Game Business, Weerasuriya discussed how "we really hoped to make a sequel" to The Order: 1886 and ruminated on what happened with the game's lackluster critical reception. "The game length [GameSpot's reviewer said it took 6 hours to finish] ... that's something that a lot of people talked about at the time," Weerasuriya said. "We cut ... I want to say 30% of the game a few months before it was released. We decided it had to come out in the time allotted. Were we to do it again, I would've probably tried to figure out a way to extend the development."

In the week leading up to the game's launch on February 20, 2015, a leaked playthrough of The Order: 1886 appeared on YouTube and showed a person beating the game in five hours. This led to Ready at Dawn denying that claim days later, arguing the game's length was roughly eight to 10 hours long.

Weerasuriya also touched on the lack of multiplayer for The Order: 1886. "We did do a multiplayer in the first year of development, but we didn't have the budget and time to finish it and, together with Sony, we decided to kill it in year two, and hopefully bring it back in a sequel," he said. "We had a functioning multiplayer. It was fun."

The sequel obviously never happened, even though Weerasuriya mentioned having "the story for the second and third one." Sony did delay The Order: 1886 in May 2014, pushing the game back to 2015.

The other Ready at Dawn co-founder, Andrea Pessino, reflected on The Order: 1886 sequel earlier this year, too. Like Weerasuriya, he mentioned the pressure to ship the game led to cut content. Facebook acquired Ready at Dawn in 2020, but then shut down the studio last year.

A live action film adaptation of the beloved anime and toy franchise Mobile Suit Gundam finally appears to have entered full production, with Bandai Namco and Legendary signing an agreement to co-finance it.

While the film was announced in 2018 it's barely been heard of since, but this word from Legendary and the newly formed Bandai Namco Filmworks America indicates fans can finally start looking forward to seeing the first ever live action Gundam film on the big screen.

The companies confirmed Mobile Suit Gundam, which currently lacks an official name, will be written and directed by Sweet Tooth's Kim Mickle and released in theaters globally.

afaik the console caught collectors' attention in the 2010s and everything skyrocketed in price, glad i got mine in 2007 for like $30 <_< haven't turned it on in years though and i heard any surviving unit will require some maintenance at this point

I bought a factory sealed copy of Death Crimson for $20 back in the mid-2010's. Game is going for hundreds of dollar. It is in the running for worst Saturn game and absolutely not worth that price at all.
