What I played of that mountain town was fine and it hit many of the expected rhythms -- kung-fu training, minigames, kooky NPCs on schedules during an implemented day-night cycle, etc. But the stamina stuff...if you're constantly wasting time every day to go buy steamed buns or something, that just hampers some of the enjoyment. There were many scenes in the previous games that you could only do in certain timeframes, so whenever pointless fluff "realism" messes with that, it's rather off-putting.

Saw in one of the reviews that there's a Nexus mod that fixes some of the annoying issues, including the stamina stuff. I haven't modded any games since I got my Deck, but apparently there's a way to do it, so maybe that tips the scales for some.

I see. Honestly, I don't mind the Shenmue-isms like awkward controls or silly voice acting, since that enhances the B-movie feel to everything. It's really that stamina thing that really killed my interest previously. Perhaps others felt the same way, especially if they played Shenmue 2 in preparation for the next, haha.

Uhhh, I bought it day one on PS4 and never finished it because it had some annoying issues that the other games didn't (namely health and stamina foolishly tied together). Not sure how it is once you leave that first mountain town, but getting everything for $4 is fine by me, especially as someone leaving the Playstation ecosystem.

A little pre-Spring Sale sale, I guess. Three bucks is the historical nadir, and you can get the digital deluxe (base + season pass) for one dollar more. It's also Deck-verified.

It has some janky qualities, but overall, a pretty fun adventure. The soundtrack is also fantastic.

MGSV, definitely. The plot is a bit shaky, real-time unlocks/upgrades are absolute trash, and some open-world characteristics chafe, especially if you're hoofing it from camp to camp trying to Fulton-extract soldiers and animals. On the other hand, the controls are absolutely fantastic to this day, the mission variety is pretty good overall, and there's lots of fun to be had just doing little side gigs and experimenting with different loadouts, characters, etc. It's earned its divisive ratings, but I can't bring myself to truly hate it, even when some decisions are the equivalent of spitting in a player's face.

On a similar note, Death Stranding has all the makings of another open-world disasterpiece: long stretches of nothing, a world seemingly meant to waste time, annoying ghosts attacking you along roads and dragging you a mile away from your destination, menial deliverman fare acting as drip-fed plot, etc. And yet, the notion of exploring a "dead" world when others can't is kinda nice. Same for building all kinds of gizmos and shelters that you and other players can use and maintain. There was a point later in the game where I built a massive zipline network all throughout, and even over, the mountains. Took an ungodly amount of hours, but not having to trudge through deep snow like a putz was worth it. Does it smooth over all the time spent on your Adopt-a-Highway quests, etc.? Naw, but the love-hate relationship was mostly balanced, and that's enough to at least play through once.

People get very attached to their characters, myself included. That's why I save-scummed all the way through XCOM-2, haha. The reviews make it sound like you can lose a lot of progress if you do that in Space Crew, though, so it probably ain't my cup o' tea.

Looking at the people whining in the recent reviews, it probably has a...learning curve.

Is it just as long as the first one? Or as Twin Peaksy? There's quite a gap between the games, so it'd kinda suck if they took it in another direction.

Anyone know if the second game's any good? I heard it wasn't as good as the first one, but it's at a record (-65%) discount and actually works on Steam Deck apparently, so now'd be a good time.
