Ideally, if your game has a set number of encounters, the difficulty will be balanced with that in mind and grinding will be unnecessary. >_>

hint: the progression systems in these games are meant to shove the players that aren't very good at the game over the difficulty humps

i can think of at least one game that has almost-entirely scripted encounters and it has random encounters as a catch-up mechanic in one area. and that works.

the fact that they're not too sweet is part of the draw.

random battles can be better, it's just they need to re-think what random battles actually mean for the game itself.

i think if they could untie progression from them that'd be something. like, instead of having these things be for the player to grind on, being a safety net and all that - undermining whatever challenge they could possibly have - make them strictly an obstacle.

also if they're a bit more rare they can be a bit more challenging.

now that i think of what life means for the white mage army's effective HP is probably higher than what the black mage army can maintain as they get whittled down -- because once they're down they're down.

it'd be like one of those pokemon showdown matches where they got like, chansey i think? substitute and recover. while the black mages get smited one at a time.

slow is a big deal here and white mages can't aoe.

i'm assuming flare/holy are one-shots unless shell.
