Seanchan 03/04/24 5:16:17 PM #2	Replayed 2 and Episode 1 as part of the various GotM topics. Still very fun games that hold up pretty well overall. Haven't gone back to revisit Episode 2 again yet though. That said, I think the Portal games still hold up better, though much of that has to do with them being puzzle games that will never be brought down by dated visuals or sparse environments. It really does suck that we will likely never get an Episode 3. Perhaps I'll get to play Alyx one day; I hear it's great but I don't want to spend all that money on VR. Also, have you played Black Mesa, the fan remake of the original? It's cute so far but the mini-room concept feels pretty played out already, I'm not sure how they make this work for another 38 levels. Most escape rooms I've done have several big puzzles that you need to solve smaller puzzles to find components or clues for, but most levels in this game aren't expansive enough for a big puzzle. So the gameplay experience feels more like just doing a bunch of tiny puzzles than really working through a room. Some levels handle it better than others, obviously. I do appreciate the lack of long-winded notes so far, many games of this style can't resist adding them. It never really evolves beyond what you've seen. It's fine, as long as you're able to have a healthy suspension of disbelief at the coincidences, plot armor, CG, etc. Nothing as stupid as the refrigerator, swinging with monkeys, or aliens thankfully. Has some decent moments but obviously not on the level of the first three films. I kind of loved this line. Ahead of acts like Third Eye Blind and Matchbox 20, Gin Blossoms had recognized a market for deceptively sordid minivan music. Fuck...those are pretty decent comparisons that never came into my mind. Both of those though have songs I remember fondly because they became big when I was a bit more aware of music. Its as if the bitter details cut too harshly against their docile image to become lore. If listeners rarely consider them as a tragic band, its because its much more gratifying to think of them how theyre most widely knownas just the Gin Blossoms, a group unburdened by expectations of coolness or relevance, whose meek demeanor disguises some undeniable riffs, and whose signature earworms, despite decades of exposure, somehow never seem to burn out. Some bands are defined by their tragedies. Others simply carry on in spite of them. I certainly didn't know about that backstory. Doesn't really change my opinions on the album at all. If it gets enough support, it could still be covered. You just maybe have to do a bit more "selling" to get it there. I also think it's healthy to take breaks every now and then, whether that's the project as a whole or as an individual participant. Seanchan 02/29/24 1:48:23 PM #9	I like the change to the start/stop date. I tend to do my closer listens on the weekend and this gives me a few days slack should I forget. I'm fully on board with switching away from the user cycle. As you said, we've strayed too far with that approach, and it'll be be nice to get back to more popular albums. Which isn't to say there's no value in the current nomination process and that I haven't genuinely enjoyed some of the more "obscure" choices (Sunspot, Crash Kings, etc.). The "monthly" (but really 4 week long) theme approach is exactly what I had already been tossing around in my mind as a way to change this topic up. Either we could vote on a theme or you could pick an appropriate one. Then for the albums, maybe you know of an easy way we could see what qualifies (to help those without an encyclopedic knowledge of, as an example, 80s glam rock bands)? Give everyone 1 nomination and then...1 more for each week they submit a ranking? Same thing for supports? I'd advocate switching to the new system as soon as feasible after a theme is picked and nominations/supports are done. Hell, we could have Steiner's selections start us off with 90s alt rock or 00s alt rock, depending on which wins the voting this week. The general audience had no clue who Iron Man was. Maybe a very, VERY small portion of people might have seen the 90s cartoon, but that was it. If you weren't a nerd, you didn't recognize him. Back then there was a massive gulf of difference in recognition between a hero like him compared to stuff like, say Spider-Man, Batman, Wonder Woman, even somewhat "lower-profile" heroes like The Hulk. No one was like "Eh, I think I'll dress as Iron Man for Halloween" if they couldn't come up with an idea for a costume. Saturday Night Live hadn't done a sketch parodying Iron Man. If you asked a person on the street to name superheroes they wouldn't ever think him up. It doesn't matter how much of a headliner he was in the comics, it doesn't matter what cartoons or video games he had appeared in the prior decade, the point is he had NO pop-culture footprint back then, and in that regard, in the eyes of the general public, he was just as well-known as Madame Web.
