Blame landlords for charging rent as if those businesses make million of dollars of profit per month. Not sure what their end game is
This is about half the reason my downtown is so dead. They never reduced rent, they just write off vacancies on their taxes instead. Our skyways are completely devoid of foot traffic or locked down, and the property owners are still charging insane rent.

There needs to be a vacancy tax, full stop. Apartments AND storefronts.

And to the guy saying he was salty to work thru covid. Yes! Exactly. I was pissed but had to pay the bills somehow?
I'm not annoyed that people had to work from home, just annoyed by the people that complained about working from home while others were risking their health without any choice. I know people who were playing Overwatch for like, half their workday WFH and still complaining about how much it sucked. Rubs me the wrong way.

My office would cater lunches throughout the entire pandemic for the staff that worked on-site, as an apology for having to put themselves at risk. Once the WFH people found out about it, they would come to the office on the days we had catering, grab lunch, and go home. It was getting so bad that the people who worked IN-OFFICE couldn't get the food that was ordered for them, since they were running out of food by the time you could take your lunch break.

Little things like that still have me a bit salty.

That being said, I feel like people should be free to make their own choices. Treat it like cigarettes, limit it in public places and inside of buildings, and let people make their own decisions.

This part I disagree with. Only because you'll find that almost all of our military investment in other countries results in a net-positive to our economy (except for the War in Afghanistan). Our involvement in the Middle East gets us cheap-ish oil without ruining our own environment.

Preventing Russia from trying to re-establish the Eastern European bloc is mutually beneficial. We get to keep tabs on our allies, and in exchange, they let us build military bases to prevent our known enemies from getting too powerful.

ALL of our military aid to Ukraine is in the form contracts where US military companies get to hire US workers and pay taxes on profits. Giving aid to Ukraine does not prevent us from trying to fix homelessness or poverty in this country.

So you can't argue that military aid make us poor. In fact, I contend that America's economic strength is predicated on its imperial strength as a military and diplomatic power.
Fair enough, I'll chew on this.

I think the user data will end up being extremely valuable. At that point it just becomes a discussion of how ethical it is.

You have users going to dedicated communities. From a business and marketing standpoint thats about as easy as it gets. You already know the customers interest and what is valuable to them. The hard part is done. Thats huge.

I may be completely wrong though.
Facebook has similar things going for it though, alongside that account being tied to basically every person they know irl. I question the value of that data, especially when there's probably a big overlap between FB and reddit in being able to tie those preferences to specific user bases (fb community groups for example).

I look at how site content moderation changes when going public or when money gets involved, and i look at a lot of the site traffic being niche nfsw communities, political communities, etc. I don't see those facets of the site being unaffected, and the reddit base in particular is very outspoken about perceived censorship.

I see the user base shrinking as a result of moderation policies changing to make reddit "palatable" and "profitable", and I'm personally skeptical of investing money in it at this point in time. But that's just my onion.

I'm not touching it personally. I don't really think they have much to offer outside of using user submissions for AI (which apparently they are going to be doing soon?) What do they have to sell outside of ads and user data, something that every other social media platform also has?

It seems like every social media site is desperately seeking other avenues of revenue as ad payouts continue to collapse. Doesn't really make me want to invest. But you can make your own decisions.
